korab rules Posted July 21, 2011 Report Posted July 21, 2011 Ever seen a roller blade player try to skate? Not pretty. We are currently paying 3 mill for a designated shootout specialist, and he can actually stop without doing circles. We have enough too many undersized 24 year old players on the team who actually know how to skate. If he couldn't hang in the ECHL what makes you think that he could ever play in bigs?

You might be right about the skating, but not necessarily everyone develops the same way. There are some exceptions to the rule and there are odd roller or other kinds of players who develop in their own time and turn out to be solid NHLers, like Paul Statsny and TJ Oshie, and don't go the usual route. I'd like to see this talented player brought around the right way and given a real chance. He was good in his short stay in the ECH, which is only 2 steps below the NHLL...I just like the org to take a chance on a guy like this and develop a star out of nothing, like a Hasek or Mogilny. I
shrader Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 I'd love to hear the strange route that a pair of high draft picks like Oshie and Stastny took to becoming pro hockey players. Hell, it's not like Stastny had a pedigree for the game or anything. Work on the analogies.
BetweenThePipes00 Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Not to mention Hasek and Mogilny hardly came from nowhere ... Hasek had played in the Canada Cup and Olympics for Czechoslovakia ... and Mogilny is probably the LEAST like this roller hockey guy given that he was in the Soviet system where he was basically a pro hockey player from his mid-teens ... he probably had far more formal hockey training than even your average Canadian kid.
Jeanbe Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Joey Mullen of the Flames is the only roller hockey player that I can recall.
Marvelo Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 http://www.narch.com/Latest_News/roller_hockey_1205072592.html maybe my analogies are a bit off, I just want to see someone come up the unexpected route.

But are they roller hockey players who became hockey players or are they hockey players who also happened to play roller hockey?
korab rules Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 But are they roller hockey players who became hockey players or are they hockey players who also happened to play roller hockey? Roller hockey is what they do in the offseason to stay in shape.
shrader Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Roller hockey is what they do in the offseason to stay in shape. Actually, I'm pretty sure Paul Stastny grew up dreaming of playing roller hockey.

Andrew Amerk Posted August 13, 2011 Report Posted August 13, 2011 Foligno should have been one of the options.
