Still don't understand why they scheduled the WC for the day after New Year's. I know a lot of people who have to work tomorrow. They should just push it back to prime time.

Can't compete with the NFL in the US.

Why not? A meaningless MNF game on cable on the final day of the season is hardly a juggernaut. They could also have played the game on New Year's eve - no NFL or major bowl games. Or it could have been a 6:00 start.

There's no MNF tomorrow. I think they want the game in the daylight to the extent possible. I meant that they couldn't play it today because of the NFL--I don't think I quite got your original point.

Nope, no MNF game in Week 17. Similar, if not exact same, New Year's Day bowl schedule to compete with as usual. Rose Bowl at 5, Fiesta Bowl at 8:30 are the big ones. Although a noon bowl game and three 1pm bowl games to compete with in the afternoon.

Hmmm. why not Saturday though? Would it REALLY not all be the same just because it's December 31 instead of January?

Yeah, I wasn't real clear. I'm just frustrated that I am going to miss because I have to work (and so do a lot of people I know - pretty much everyone who works outside the government, it seems). And it seems that scheduling should have been better, especially with the holiday falling on a weekend this year.

It would make more sense to me - both this year and in the future. There are usually no big bowl games on NYE, so there's no head-to-head.

Well, it won't be an issue again until 2017, at least.

I assume you mean the holiday falling on a weekend, right?

Right. Typically, EVERYONE works Dec. 31. It just so happened to be on Saturday this year that caused the "company holidays" issued on Monday the 2nd.

True. Most of the time, when NYD falls on a weekday, our office is open limited hours and even if I had to work I would be out by 1:00 at the latest.

Side note: my wife's company was acquired by another company, and the new parent company does not give NYD as a paid holiday. They have to use a floating holiday if they want it off. I was stunned to learn that. If I have to work on a major holiday when no one is in the office, I am on full cruise control that day. But NYD should be a paid holiday.

Specifically on a Sunday, but yeah.

Brz not starting tomorrow. Spilled the beans. Funny video. http://blogs.buffalonews.com/sabres/2012/01/hbo-star-bryzgalov-announces-hes-not-starting-in-goal-for-winter-classic-1.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+typepad%2Fbuffalonews%2Fsabres+%28Sabres+Edge%29

This year we might finally see an Original Six Stanley Cup Finals. the conference finals might be Bruins-Rangers and Red Wings-Blackhawks. If the Sabres aren't in it, I hope this happens.

Hmmm... If you're going to with the Wild, how about Gopher Stadium in Minneapolis, which seats 50,000? (more than the baseball stadiums they've done so far.) I know your point was to go with a historic site such as Lambeau, which I agree would also be cool. Regardless, they're going to keep going with the well-known, top-notch, big hockey market teams, which doesn't include Minnesota. (Even though they support their team just fine... casual fans just haven't heard of them.)

Anyone know why this year's wasn't just done at Lincoln Financial instead of the baseball park? I've always liked the football stadium more, they seem so much more natural.

Edit: We gotta get a separate All About the Winter Classic 2012 (holy crap it was weird to type that year) thread going soon

It wasn't at the Linc cuz the Eagles had a home game there on Jan 1st.

One day wouldn't have been enough time to prepare.

Carcillo suspended indefinitely until his hearing with Player Safety regarding his hit on Tom Gilbert during the Oiler's game.

Also, Jagr to miss a week or so due to a strain of some sort.

Which Oiler?

Seems like Dale Hunter is starting to get things turned around in Washington. After a slow start the Caps have won 4 in a row and OV has 6 goals in his last five game. Florida's hold on the division lead may not last for much longer.
