darksabre Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 MSG and not MSG HD. The latter has some thing where guys bounce an orange ball around. It's very strange to me. But dark, thanks for the Ice Bowl heads up, even if on "regular def." It's been a while since I've seen it on screen. Watching it now...this was the first in the US, and certainly the best. I was there. It was a near-holy event in these parts. The Pit fans were as in awe as we were, it really was a neat day. I went to the next one, too, at Wrigley, and it wasn't even close to the same. And that had little to do with venue, or weather (it was SO much colder in Chicago); it had a lot to do with fans knowing the game. We got lucky with Buffalo and PIt; lots of educated fans. Not the same story at Wrigley, even though Detroit was in. I've got it in HD here in Rochester, so that's weird. You're right, it was the best. I was one of the people at the arena who didn't get tickets to the real thing. It was a blast even though I wasn't there. This is nice because I get to wax nostalgic about guys like Spacek. I miss that dude. Amazing how different the team is now. Kalinen, Tallinder, Campbell, Mair, Connolly, Afinogenov, Paetsch, Spacek, Lydman, Paille, all long gone. Edit: Ryan and Peters too haha Gaustad just threw three big hits in one shift. What happened to that guy?
darksabre Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 This is good hockey. Good pace, aggressive forechecking, big hits. What happened to this team?
Eleven Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 This is good hockey. Good pace, aggressive forechecking, big hits. What happened to this team? Well, the team you're watching didn't make the playoffs. I guess that the team won a division title two years later and, one year after that, barely made the playoffs and flamed out. The same team is struggling with injuries right now. EDIT: Look at those large snowflakes! How wonderfully perfect!

I guess that the team won a division title two years later and, one year after that, barely made the playoffs and flamed out. The same team is struggling with injuries right now. EDIT: Look at those large snowflakes! How wonderfully perfect! I think if Vanek hadn't struggled like he did, that team would have been in a better place. Also, too many filler players like Mair, Paetsch, Peters, Ryan, and Paille. And no real backup goalie with Thibault on the bench. That team was bad, but the hockey doesn't look awful. Same pieces not coming through though, like Roy and Pommers. Really wondering where old Goose went. He was a wrecking ball when he had some.

Honestly, I think the hockey doesn't look awful because the Pens were young and jelling and because the rink was filled with snow. Agreed on Goose. His best days were stationed in front of the net on powerplays; I wish there was room for him to fill that role again, but I suspect there isn't. And definitely too many filler players. Paille is a great example, but every time he scores a goal in Boston, he's a "wouldv'e been an all-star" here in Buffalo, on this board. We have the same problem now--too many fillers--but for a different reason. Still, this is fun to watch; thanks for putting it up there that the game is on.
darksabre Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 Man we should have won that game. We had a boat load of chances and just couldn't bury any of them.
Eleven Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 Man we should have won that game. We had a boat load of chances and just couldn't bury any of them. Yep. And Ales on the shootout.
darksabre Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 Yep. And Ales on the shootout. Beauty. Vanek does a good job of covering that page now. Going to Max was a poor choice. And just to defend Miller on the Letang goal, man is it hard to move on ice when it's covered in snow. On regular ice he makes that save. That was fun to watch again. I think I liked it more this time around. :)
Eleven Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 Uhh, chz, I'm lovin' this "postgame show" on 730. It reminds me of the breast thread. I wonder why.

Not the same story at Wrigley, even though Detroit was in. Probably the funnest game I was ever at. Both of my kids got to go; neither fully understood the significance of the 1st ever US NHL outdoor game, but they're both happy they can claim they were there and are developing an appreciation for it. Loved the fact that it didn't snow except when the game was on. Both intermissions were snowless. The game was kind of like a great big snow globe. Also loved that they gave STHs comparable tix to where we sit in the Mmarena. Getting to sit w/ the same people that are at the 'regular' games improved the experience.

I took my little sister as a christmas present (her first ever NHL game). It was the most amazing experience ever! I will never forget it, that's for sure.

He understood the game; he didn't understand why a bunch of us rolled up to the game in a limo bus with grills and coolers. He'll learn.

sabres1970 Posted December 31, 2011 Report Posted December 31, 2011 Thought of a cool idea regarding the Winter Classic. Hear me out: The NHL has already hit some of the most historic stadiums in the north, Wrigley, Fenway, Ralph Wilson Stadium (99% joking). So, in my opinion, that leaves two distinct venues/cities that have not been done yet. New York and Yankee Stadium, and Lambeau field. Being that the NHL has been screwed in prior years (and could again this year) by the Mid- Atlantic climate and the fact that the Rangers are in it this year, I cannot see them doing the WC next year in the Bronx. So here's an idea, Blackhawks (again, sorry) vs. Wild, not in Target field, but in Lambeau Field. It is arguably the most iconic sports venue in America and since Wisconsin/Milwaukee doesn't have an NHL team, take the two closest teams. Don't have to pick a Canadian team and risk a decline in American viewership. Football fans of all sorts will be somewhat interested. Get the big market in Chicago back in the mix. The Wild are a much improved team with a loyal fan base. Sounds good to me. I've also heard the Red Wings in the Big House, but it's been done (for the NCAA). Lambeau would be quite the spectacle. Plus there's little to no risk of rain/warm weather. Yankees/Giants Stadium, Citi Field, the Big House, Target Field and other Canadian options can wait. Or of course, bring it back to Buffalo. I'd be down with that.

I know your point was to go with a historic site such as Lambeau, which I agree would also be cool. Regardless, they're going to keep going with the well-known, top-notch, big hockey market teams, which doesn't include Minnesota. (Even though they support their team just fine... casual fans just haven't heard of them.) Anyone know why this year's wasn't just done at Lincoln Financial instead of the baseball park? I've always liked the football stadium more, they seem so much more natural. Edit: We gotta get a separate All About the Winter Classic 2012 (holy crap it was weird to type that year) thread going soon

Philly in Happy Valley. Interstate rivals, neutral site. I also think if they decided to go Islanders vs. Devils, it should be in either the Meadowlands or at Citi field. If the islanders host, Citi field is technically Long Island (or connected to it). If they go Devils, it makes sense that they play in Metlife Stadium because its in NJ.
deluca67 Posted December 31, 2011 Report Posted December 31, 2011 The Islanders are up on the Oilers 4-1. If they hold on they will only be 5 points behind the Sabres with a game in hand.

deluca67 Posted January 1, 2012 Report Posted January 1, 2012 So what you are saying is that we are just as close to being in last place as we are to making the playoffs? There are no teams to be taken for granted. The Sabres need to treat every team like the are the Gretzky Oilers teams. There are no more points remaining to be left on the ice.
