Bmwolf21 Posted December 4, 2011 Report Posted December 4, 2011 Why is it that you get a penalty for slashing someone's stick but it's ok to slash a two hand a guy without a call?? Why is it a penalty to do a one hand hook but not one when you crosscheck a guy in the ribs? Just a few of the things I noticed tonight in one of the games I watched tonight.. NHL reffing is maddening. Amen, brother.
deluca67 Posted December 4, 2011 Report Posted December 4, 2011 Latest realignment possibility: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Latest-NHL-radical-realignment-plan-breaks-up-So?urn=nhl-wp18932&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter I like the concept, just needs a couple of tweaks. Coastal ----- Boston New Jersey NY Islanders NY Rangers Washington Florida Tampa Carolina Philly East ----- Buffalo Montreal Ottawa Toronto Pittsburgh Columbus Detroit Central ------- Winnipeg Minnesota Chicago Nashville St. Louis Dallas Colorado West ------ Edmonton Calgary Vancouver Phoenix Anaheim Los Angeles San Jose No reason to force balanced Divisions when geographically it just doesn't make sense. I would go Divisional seeding for round one of the playoffs and Conference seeding for the next two.

Samson's Flow Posted December 4, 2011 Report Posted December 4, 2011 Lucic and the Bruins just put on an unbelievable clinic in zone possession against the Leafs. Held the puck in for nearly three minutes and the Leafs couldn't get it back. Size and work ethic getting it done. As much as I hate the Bruins I'd love our team to be able to do what they do. :clapping: I wish our team could do this. This is how to make an effective team in the playoffs, where clutching and grabbing increases and open ice is at a premium. I would model my team with size and puck possession first and foremost as a GM.

Tom Backyard Posted December 4, 2011 Report Posted December 4, 2011 The NY Times is running a three part piece titled, "Punched Out: The Life and Death of a Hockey Enforcer." The intro from NY Times.com Over six months, The New York Times examined the life and death of the professional hockey player Derek Boogaard, who rose to fame as one of the sport's most feared fighters before dying at age 28 on May 13. This article, the first of a three-part series, revisits Boogaard's childhood in the rugged youth and junior leagues of western Canada and his progression from physically awkward boy to renowned brawler on the ice. It's the Times, so the research and journalism is top notch. There are also direct links to the fights and events written in the article. bunomatic Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 In the Calgary/Vancouver game tonight David Booth of the Canucks ran right over Calgarys goalie. Same thing, cutting to the net and decided to go through him rather than avoid him. A bit of a donneybrook ensued but no real fisticuffs to speak of. Shannahan could have put a stop to this nonsense by simply making the right call on the Lucic/Miller incident. What a twatt. Now its becoming a common occurance.

I don't know, they just showed highlights on NHL Network and either they didn't show it, or the situation you're talking about isn't even comparable to what happened to Miller.

It was comparable to what happened to Miller in that it was a forward cutting to the front of the net and running over a goalie. Not sure on a scale of 1-10 how close it was to being the same not that that matters but it was a guy running over a goalie through the crease.

As bad as the Lucic hit was on Miller, i take MORE issue with these "in the crease" hits. The ice is a different color for a reason, Shanny is going to have to send a message here. I hate to separate the Lucic/Miller hit from these 2 more recent hits, but you kind of have to. Am I off on this? I feel kind of bad for taking this stance....

Well I retract my last post and owe bunomatic an apology, as that hit is certainly pretty similar to what happened to Miller the other night. NHL Network didn't show this in the highlights and made no mention of it-- though they showed Iginla taking a goaltender interference penalty, and showed another minor collision that actually resulted in a injury to Calgary's back-up goaltender. Yikes.

Just stop driving towards the net? I can see that this running into the goalie garbage is becoming a witch hunt. Booth did nothing wrong. Booth is not a Tootoo and has concussion problems of his own. He drove wide and drove towards the net. The fact that Calgary didn't get a ruffing penalty is a joke.
korab rules Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 What are players supposed to do? Just stop driving towards the net? He drove wide and drove towards the net. The fact that Calgary didn't get a ruffing penalty is a joke. A witch hunt? So goalies should be fair game in their own crease? If so, we will need expanded roster limits so every team can have the four or five goalies necessary to get through a game. Now you are just being a contrarian for the sake of being a contrarian. It detracts from the credibility of your other contrarian positions. I'll give you this: it's a better way to increase scoring than larger nets.
Eleven Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 Booth definitely did something wrong; a player is not allowed contact with the goaltender in the crease. It's really that basic. I'll also note that the Flames did little more than bunch up and grab on to various Canucks--which is why no penalty. I'll look forward to a month of posts about how the Flames are soft and how Sutter has coached all the toughness out of the team. Or maybe, since the Flames did start a scrum when Rome cross-checked some minor skater, the Flames just won't stand up for Kipper. Let's have some posts about that, too. In that Turkey video--did someone throw a trident?
Sabre Dance Posted December 5, 2011 Report Posted December 5, 2011 I'm not sure what the league is thinking by not coming down on the "running" of goaltenders. Maybe there aren't enough on-ice conflicts going on so if they allow goalies to become fair game, we might have some more donnybrooks. They must have taken a lesson from NASCAR - when interest and attendance began to drop, the bumping on-track and the verbal (and occasionally physical) confrontations between drivers increased. Note to Bettman: It didn't work for NASCAR, and it won't work for the NHL. It makes them look like the WWE. I'll pass, thanks...

The sad part is that so many of the fans tend to back up the perception all the time. Just look at the response to all the Lucic stuff, constant blood lust. At least there were a few decent human beings on that rink trying to break stuff up instead of heading right towards the first guy from the opposing team that they can find, blindly throwing punches.
