SwampD Posted November 12, 2011 Report Posted November 12, 2011 What is exciting about Crosbys game? I understand that he puts a ton of points on the board, but I wouldn't describe him as flashy or exciting. Every part of his game is flashy and exciting, that is, if you like hockey.

Marvelo Posted November 14, 2011 Report Posted November 14, 2011 lol, come on dude they push new stars all the time, but none of them are close to the excitement that he brings to the game. It's truly unfortunate that Sid is still out. He's a credit to the game, the Gretzky of our time. It used to be that stars were untouchables in the game, an unwritten rule. Now everyone who's in a vulnerable spot is fair game for the soulless goons who've taken over.
spndnchz Posted November 14, 2011 Author Report Posted November 14, 2011 Paille gets crushed in the dome by a slapper tonight. Yikes. http://thebiglead.co...e-face-tonight/ Hope he's alright. He's pretty messed up but okay. http://video.bruins.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=1224&id=134388

Tom Backyard Posted November 15, 2011 Report Posted November 15, 2011 No discussion here (that I could find) about Dougie Gilmour being inducted in the Hall of Fame. I know his production while he was here in Buffalo wasn't like it was for him in Toronto, but hats off to a guy who was part of our Stanley Cup run team (even if he was a trade deadline guy). From what I have read about him in Howard Berger's On the Road, he was a great teammate.

Tom Backyard Posted November 15, 2011 Report Posted November 15, 2011  Sorry, I was young then, and those seasons do blend together.

Marvelo Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 They added Gilmour late in the 1999-2000 season, the year after our cup run. Didn't Gilmour absolutely end up despising Lindy Ruff and the Buffalo Sabres organization? I never got that story.
Weave Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 Didn't Gilmour absolutely end up despising Lindy Ruff and the Buffalo Sabres organization? I never got that story. Yep. At least part of it (well, that's how it was reported anyway) was because Lindy insisted on using him at left wing when he was more comfortable (and more productive) at center position. I'm sure there was more to it than just that but Gilmour definitely was vocal about being glad to move on.

Go figure....one of the most instinctive players in the game who had an edginess and was a natural leader.....didn't work well with Ruff?

The bad blood didn't come from his ice role as much as Gilmour's desire to get traded to Ottawa. IIRC. Proud player that wanted a chance to win a cup near his home towwn. Darcy was't going to trade him there as a veteran courtesy - so things got frosty for him. As far as Gilmour freewheeling, that was never really him, he was a disciplined player with hustle, but he had a chip on his shoulder over what he deserved - which isn't Lindy's style at all. Mostly it was the next year in Montreal when Lindy "ordered" the goalie to get run, and Gilmouir took it as a personal insult. As far as I remember.

X. Benedict Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 Refresh my memory here. Varata took a run at Theodore in goal and Gilmour took a run in Varata. Theodore got concussed. Gilmour blamed Ruff for cheap tactics. I do recall the some of the LW flap after Gilmour left. But really by then, Gilmour just couldn't cover the middle much. Chicago had moved him to LW before he came to Buffalo. Ruff would move him around. Mostly I believe it was Darcy not moving him to Ottawa that burned him the most though. I'm not sure but I think Gilmour got thrown out for a knee on knee on Varata. I could be mixing up more than one game though.
That Aud Smell Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 i always thought gilmour's only regret was that he didn't punch out mike robitaille and brian blessing.
X. Benedict Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 i always thought gilmour's only regret was that he didn't punch out mike robitaille and brian blessing. Ray working with Roby didn't work well on the post-game shootout. That would stew and glare at each other. It took Ray quite a while to divorce himself from his playing days. It is hard for these guys to face the end.

I don't recall that at all. The 90's were tough on me though. :D I have no doubt that Varada was up to doing it. :P
Tom Backyard Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 Wow. I never knew all of the drama that accompanied Gilmour's time as a Sabre. Thanks to all the old timers for filling me in. I knew of the reputation that the guy had for most of his career as an edgy leader who could score.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted November 17, 2011 Report Posted November 17, 2011 Wow. I never knew all of the drama that accompanied Gilmour's time as a Sabre. Thanks to all the old timers for filling me in. I knew of the reputation that the guy had for most of his career as an edgy leader who could score. He was Druryesque...sort of a loner type that stayed low keyed but guys in the room either respected or were scared of him. He was nasty on the ice. Those clips in that film may have only been a season or two in Toronto. He was a beast in Calgary too. Grosek was one guy I was convinced was going to be a Lucic type. I guess Chicago did too because Dumont and Gilmour for him is a lot of loot...even if Dougie was on the downside.
