MattPie Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 These are all great philosophical questions. I think it would be really interesting to compile a list of GMs records across different teams, as well as teams. Toronto has been 0-45. Is it somehow better because they've had (probably) 15 GMs in that time? How many GMs have been out there that have been 0-15 (just has Regier has) just over 4-5 teams? Is Burke a better GM because he's won a cup or worse because the Leafs have missed the playoffs (and failed to finish better than 4th in the NE) in the 4-ish seasons he's been the GM? (FWIW, that drought is longer than any of the consecutive Sabres missed seasons since Regier took over)
Randall Flagg Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 Is that like when people label somebody a socialist Obama lover if they say one bad thing about Bush? Sorry, I'll shut up now. I always here the other side as my friends are all very liberal... Say something negative about President Obama and you automatically are an inbred hick who wants to perform ###### to GW. It's irritating. I hate politics, and these arguments are literally the same thing. Darcy isn't as bad as one side says, and should be held more accountable by the other. And since we know he will be here at least this coming season, why not just keep the arguing to a lower level, in threads designed for it. I understand the huge frustration of 15 years, and feel much of it, but I never feel the need to prod at the less "pessimistic" or "realistic" people at every possible chance. Go Sabres. Can't wait for the draft.
darksabre Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 After 15 years it's not "nitpicking", it's an accumulation of evidence that it's just not working. I could just as easily argue that Rick Dudley hasn't worked either. But I don't see you paying any attention to that aspect.

If you could, you would be. With any replacement for for Regier there is going to be questions and some doubt. After 15 seasons watching Regier, there is no doubt or questions in his inability to build a Stanley Cup winner. Regier is not good enough. The frustrating part is that we are likely to be having this same discussion a year from now.

To my liberal friends they think I'm a redneck hick, to my redneck hick friends I am a die hard liberal, lol. But yeah these discussions are very similar. Everybody can take Darcy's failures over the years and use it against him but rarely does the discussion ever turn to the fact he's been working on a fiscal leash for years. He's made more surprise moves in the last year than he did several years previously combined. I think he deserves another year to see what he can do. I'm quite pleased with the moves he's made in the last year.

I'm not going to spend time providing any more, as they are not hard to find. We're in agreement on the last part though. I would hope we aren't having this same conversation this time next year. Either things will have worked out and the Sabres will still be in it, or Darcy will have both feet in the grave, especially if they miss or bow out meekly in the first round.

BetterDays06 Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 With all this drama with Patrick Kane in Chicago, any chance he is moved ?
SwampD Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 With all this drama with Patrick Kane in Chicago, any chance he is moved ? None. If Chicago moves him because of those pics then they are idiots. And if I had to guess, I bet that Bowman only said he was disappointed because he felt he had to, not because he actually was.

If I were them, I'd be considering moving him, with or without those pictures. I think he's pretty much at his ceiling right now. Maximize his value while you can. They've got enough top end guys to carry that team even with him gone.

spndnchz Posted May 30, 2012 Author Report Posted May 30, 2012 Looks like Lidstrom is announcing his retirement at a presser tomorrow.

Trettioåtta Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 Damn, i will miss Lidstrom - loved watching him play - an incredible player and class act (to use cliche phrasing)
shrader Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 Damn, i will miss Lidstrom - loved watching him play - an incredible player and class act (to use cliche phrasing) I'd label him as the best defenseman of my lifetime. Obviously you can never truly rank these things, but he belongs in the conversation for best ever.

Obviously you can never truly rank these things, but he belongs in the conversation for best ever. For what it's worth, he's the best defenseman I've ever seen play. One of the amazing things to me is I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing said about him, he seems to be universally revered by media, fans, teammates, and opponents.

He didn't win his first until he was 31! So that's 7 Norris' all over the age of 30. Unbelievable.

Trettioåtta Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 Lidstrom is incredible, it is a shame i didn't get to watch more of his game :/ Damn good role model - seems like a genuinely nice guy. It seems like he is borderline tearful in this press conference

millbank Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=397296 Bob Hartley to coach Calgary Flames not Montreal.....
Trettioåtta Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 He could make a heck of coach some time in the future. Yes, he could. The Wings staff often mention that they ask him for his view of teams and tips for how to play them etc. He said he would like to remain attached to the Wings in some capacity but that he is going back to Sweden to be near his family. Maybe be will become a scout for a bit?
X. Benedict Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=397296 Bob Hartley to coach Calgary Flames not Montreal..... Wow. That's a surprise.
