But Pommer will :w00t:

Yes. He is a dual citizen, but has chosen to play for USA in past IIHF tournaments, so he is an American for Olympics purposes.

IIHF World Championship and probably. It's a silly tournament because no legit world championship would have its tournament at the same time that the dominant club league in the world has its playoffs. It would be the equivalent of having the soccer World Cup coincide with the Champions League quarters, semis, and finals.

Hockey's real international tournament is the Olympics. Respectfully, I don't think Gerbe gets a shot at that team USA!

I'm not so sure anyone in the NHL will get a shot at that team USA. I guess Bettman could be holding onto it as a quickly thrown in bargaining chip, but I really don't see what the NHL has to gain from letting players go.

I cannot see Malkin, Kovalchuk, Datsyuk, and Ovechkin NOT playing in the Socchi Olympics. Especially after the recent Russian Hockey Tragedy. I also don't see Betman throwing down with Vladimir Putin. In fact I would gurantee that Putin would take it as an assault on his honor for some American Squirrel to deny him and his motherland the glory of hosting the biggest tournament in one of that country's favorite team sport. What would the fallout be if they just got on planes and flew home for a couple weeks in 2014?

Revenue my friend. Revenue.

Breach of contract? They'd be out of the league for the year. I suppose the KHL could try to take them on at that point, but that's a legal issue I don't think they'd want any part of. I'm sure the NHL winds up caving in order to get some other concession from the NHLPA, but I don't think they should.

Alexander Litvinenko's Ghost would tell you that there are some things that trump revenue.

Certainly. But tell that to a bunch of attorneys like Bettman.

That said, most of those NTC/NMC's are pretty weak for the players. Some NMC's are only in the last year of their contract and one says that if they miss the playoffs it's pretty much null and void.

That said, I don't see Burke selling anyone but Schenn.

And I think the Canucks wouldn't have a problem making that deal, Schenn for Luo. There were some stories coming out that with the length of Luo's deal, and the fact that the entire league knows they want to deal him and keep Schneider, they are going to have to almost give him away, and they may not be looking for much back because it clears them of the contract and mess in net. If they could get a prospect with potential like Schenn back in the deal, that would be a bonus.

Burke has said already this offseason that they need goaltending help, and with his situation of hanging by a string to keep his job, he has to do something big this year cause its probably playoffs or unemployment line this year. They will be active making some deals this offseason to clear some salary, and Leafs fans have a tendency tosee any move that involves them getting a name player as being the greatest move to ever happen, this would be huge for them, that they stole one of the leagues best goalies for a prospect who will never make it  and both Schenn and Kadri seem to have gone from future superstars to trade bait in the fans eyes rather quickly

I'm quite sure a few years ago Ovechkin went on record saying he was playing for Russia, whether the NHL "allowed" it or not. Now, that may have just been some bluster he doesn't follow through on with the prospect of his $9.5 million per year contract being voided...although I'm sure the KHL would be happy to accommodate him.

Generally I just expect the Olympics to be used as a CBA bargaining football. The players want to go more than the owners want them to (from what I've read), so I'd expect the owners to trade it for something (realignment perhaps).

I don't think the big issue would be the contracts getting voided, cause I don't think the league and teams would do that. Its the lawsuits for not honoring the contracts and the player having to pay money back to the team, and probably the compensation the courts might award from the Russian team/federation that would be the big problems. The KHL has money to help offset just the salary loss from the player..........

Injunctions are likely the teams' best remedies in the unlikely event that players impermissibly attempt to play in the Olympics. I'm betting that the league will allow players to play.

The most I could see happening is players facing fines or suspensions for leaving their teams if they go without the league or teams approval. Problem lies in the injury liability. I'm sure the Caps wouldn't be pleased if Ovy was hurt in the tournament while playing and was out for a while from teh NHL season. They would view a player going over to play the same as a player skipping practice or missing team meetings

players like Ovy won't have their contrats voided, I really doubt the Caps would want to lose his rights just cause he took off to play for Russia.

I'd be extremely surprised to see the final deal between the players & owners not allowing for them to participate in the Olympics.

Someone posted upthread that the tradeoff will probably be the realignment. Which will be truly ironic because Fehr's argument against the realignment was too much player travel, so to allow for additional player travel during the regular season the players will demand the right to travel 1/2 way across the world during the middle of the season.

Travel halfway accross the world for 2 weeks, once every 4 years, is different then having a couple trips accross the country for maybe a week, or for some teams to have to make routine trips accross a time zone or 2 to play a couple games.

Speaking of that "NIT":

NBC Sports Network continues to do it right by showing 13 games in the IIHF tourney.

I'm not quite sure what you mean about his attitude, he seemed to want to put the team first and thats all I would ask of a player. I'd have said yes to that contract so thats not his fault.

His heart has never been in it. He was a prime donna in FL and it was obvious which games he chose to 'play'. He would pout every time he didn't get his way and turned down a huge contract to stay in FL. I think FL knew he wouldn't take it and they weren't willing to give him the insane contract he thought he was worth. Turns out Vancouver was dumb enough to. Look at the way he is portrayed in Vancouver, it's no different. Of course I can't fault him for taking that contract, if a team is willing to dish out as much as he thinks he is worth by all means take it. Now Vancouver is probably stuck with trying to find somebody who is willing to take on the rest of his contract. It all worked out for FL, Vokoun and Anderson turned out to be much more consistent golatenders.

I'm curious and would be interested in Rickshaw's take on how much of a role, if any, taking the 'C' away from Luongo and giving it to Henrik affected him? On the surface, the lighter workload in '10-'11 seemed to help him and the lack of the 'C' wasn't a factor.

Good point. I don't think it fazed him. But I'm not him so I don't know. He did have a pretty good 10-11 season, but even then he was criticized for showing up when he felt like it. He'd be a great goaltender if he kept his head in the game.
