I was going to start a separate thread for the conspiracy theory, but let's not bother with that. Let's have it all here.

Edmonton is practicing the Pittsburgh method. (according to Burkie)

They're doing it well, with one notable exception: the backstop.

The question being, who does Edmonton take? Do they really need more offense? Or do they trade the number 1 pick for lower first rounders and take a D man? Do they trade it for a real goalie?

Defense and goaltending are Edmonton's weaknesses. Picking flashy offensive players year after year doesn't solve their problems.

A no-brainer if you ask me. They take Yakupov.

If I'm Edmonton, I shop the pick and at least see what kind of value I could get. If I get a fantastic offer, I move it. If that offer doesn't come, I take Yakupov.

That's what I'd do. All the offense depth in the world isn't going to help them make the playoffs. Their goals for numbers this year were fine, but goals against was brutal. They need defense and goaltending more than the earth needs the sun.

But flashy offensive players have trade value. So, unless you get a big offer at the draft, you draft Yak, then trade one of your flashy forwards down the road for one of those other needs. Find the right mix, then the odd man (men) out gets you what you need.

Right. That's essential TrueBlue's argument as well. And it's probably the right one.

I could see Edmonton getting some crazy offers for that first pick.

#12, #20something, Mark Pysyk (Oil kings), and Stafford for Yakupov......hmm?

I don't think that'd be enough to get it done.

I think Edmonton would want Miller and both first rounders.

Or maybe Enroth, McNabb and both 1st's.

The price would be high to pry that 1st away from Edmonton.

You're probably right, and in the meantime, I'd let 'em have Yakupov. I'm not as convinced with this kid as I have been with other consensus No. 1s.

That 1st pick is definitely on the market. They need help on the blue line badly. There's plenty of it in this draft, but they will not take it with that first pick. I really wouldn't be surprised if Columbus gave up their two first round picks for that 1st overall choice., maybe also landing a 3rd rounder or so in return.

How does Edmonton suck so badly? They have followed the Pens method of becoming good, if they do not make the playoffs then they have failed. And in 2 years if they do not win the league with ease, then they have failed.

3 No.1 picks, all playing different positions is insane

They didn't follow the Pens method 100%, all of their picks have been forwards IIRC

The Pens were gifted Malkin and Crosby and picked Jordan Staal early, but also used a #1 on Fleury, a goaltender (one of Edmontons weaknesses even though its common knowledge around here you don't need a stud goalie  )

Instead of wanting the oilers #1 overall pick, why not see if they would give up one of their previous #1s (Nugent-Hopkins, Hall, or even Eberly) for a little less?

And after seeing Stafford play on the line with Ennis, I'm not so eager to give him up and break up that line unless its something big in return. I wouldn't just give him away for that bag of pucks anymore, like I would with Roy

How much more does it suck to be Columbus? They were beyond horrible this year, had the face of their franchise want to be moved, and the only bright spot was the #1 overall pick which now is going to a team thats most likely going to trade it away and cost you if you want it

Well they could hold out on the hope that Edmonton keeps the pick and goes D there. Then they'd still get Yakupov with that second pick and not have to move anything for him. That may not be the smartest move though. As long as there is that thread of Edmonton dealing the pick, they may have to go out and make that deal themselves.

I can't see the oilers GM being that stupid and just staying there to take a defencemen. They either take Yakupov, or they get out of that spot. Columbus is going to have to give up some kind of resource to swap from 2nd to 1st in order to get the best player in the draft, cause if they don't make the deal, some other team needing a forward will.

Would anyone trade Myers for that #1 pick?

Posted

Hell no! I wouldn't trade him for two. I think most people want results in the near future now. Most of us are sick of waiting. Most first round picks means more waiting.
