Ah, ok

I didn't hear about the new contract in the trade, I thought they were just getting him for this season and had to re-sign him.

So if he is out for 2 weeks, I guess he is done for the season

I went looking for something around the interwebs that discussed this very topic and couldn't find anything. For whetever it is worth (which I freely admit is damned near nothing) my recollection is that the Lindros draft was prime motivator. I remember The Hockey News openly suggesting that Quebec had tanked at least two of the 3 most recent years in order to build up talent. And IIRC, the Quebec situation was used as a justification, not the Lemieux draft.

Then again, I could def see Lemieux still being discussed to so............

Your recollection of what THN was saying back around then got me curious to see if I was 'misremembering.' According to THN's '95 draft preview, the leading proponents of the lottery were Bettman and (then) Devils owner John McMullen. While THN mentioned that it was instituted to protect the integrity of the game and guard against teams not going all out at the end of the year for fear of possibly losing the #1 pick; there was only 1 specific example given. "It's generally believed the 1983-84 Pittsburgh Penguins didn't put their best skate forward, to ensure they would finish last overall and get Mario Lemieux."

It's a good thing for them that they did give him the contract. He would have needed to get to 28 NHL games played. He's at 12 (assuming he has played more than 30 minutes in all of those games, but I'm not looking up those stats) now so unless they strung together a decent playoff run with him as the starter, he wasn't going to get there even if healthy.

One of HNiC's Elliotte Friedman's 30 Thoughts:

"30. NHL teams watching Nail Yakupov in the OHL playoffs last Friday: Toronto, Anaheim, Buffalo, Columbus. Probably more, but those were the ones I heard about."

I would be shocked if at least half the teams in the league didnt have a scout at an OHL playoff game with one of the top porspects playing.

throw in the fact that theres other players in the draft from those teams that scouts may be watching also

Three straight shutouts for St. Louis. They're playing great hockey... but are sooooooooo boring to watch.

Would you expect anything else from Hitchcocky?

Pfft, thats nothing, I had 5 shutouts in a row this year in my league (a beginners/starter hockey league for adults who haven't played in a league before)

Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier about to be fired.

And will they go with Patrick Roy as was speculated a couple weeks back? When it comes to trade time, he'll never hear the phone calls with all those rings stuck in his ears.

Doesn't he sing that song ' someone I used to know ' ?

If it happens there'll be a great wringing of hands in Montreal for firing a french Canadian.
