Sabres resign Mike Weber

I look at this signing as a formality. Mike Weber is a player I can't wait to watch develop further. This is a player that has the potential to be a Ken Daneyko type. A sold blueliner who may never be the best d-man on his team or a perennial all-star. A solid physical presence for years to come.

I agree...I hope its a 4 year deal at least....any terms announced yet?

I love him. He makes the young guy brainfarts, but he is one of a handful on the team that actually command respect on the ice from the other team. He can pretty much be a clone of Regehr, but with a tinge more of nastiness. I can honestly say I am happy with the buildout of this team from goal to D to the bottom 2 lines. If they could just get a real center and a forward who can score 20 goals and is legitimately worthy of wearing a letter, then they are top 5 potential.

Weber has become one of my favorite Sabre over the last few years. With Connolly out of the fold, I sort of want to buy a Weber jersey. I usually go for the more obscure jerseys that not everyone in WNY is going to have but I did end up buying an Ennis 40th. Perhaps Weber will be my next one... I don't have a single away jersey.

I agree. This was a formality in my mind. I'm glad he'll be back.

I don't know if Weber has the mean streak that Daneyko had but I just got wood thinking about the idea of a Daneyko type D-man on our roster long term.

I love the comparison and thought I am just not convinced the new NHL with all the emphasis on protecting players or Lindy Ruff for that matter will allow this type of player to flourish.

Very good re-signing by the Sabres. I really like Weber. He has a tendency to make some bad decisions in the defensive zone, but he's physical and generally very good in the defensive zone. And, while he may not put up the points, he is consistently a plus player, and that's a guy you want on your team. I'm very happy with this signing/formality.

I like what I see on D and I'm assuming that Sekera and Gragnani will be signed but does anybody else have a small concern that the only right-handed shot is Myers? Everyone else is a lefty. I guess if Leo and Regehr played together in Calgary as a pair for a while - that should be some familiarity, but with the other pairing, hopefully things run smoothly.

Weber gets 2 yrs/$1.9-million. Sabres now just about $355,000 under the Cap.

950k avg, He'll still be an RFA after the contract expires.

Yeah, but let's wait and see what actually happens before we start writing players off like it's a sure thing. You're just making an assumption that Kotalik goes to Rochester.

You're not?

+1 on these, and I would just add that I'm very glad he wasn't the one traded this summer. If I were Feaster, Weber is the young Sabres defenseman I would've demanded in exchange for Regehr.

As for the bolded part, there is a very real possibility that those 2 are Leino and Vanek. Give them a chance.

Good info. Thanks. Good move by Darcy to keep Weber at a cheap price and still an RFA after this contract.

Oh, well. Our gain, their loss.

Good signing at a good price.

Now we need to get Sekera signed up. I think he will be important in future dealings because he's the kind of defenseman that catches your eye. Plus, of course Gragnani & Enroth, also trade bait.

Love the signing, love the terms. He's a favorite of mine as well, however I hope he doesn't turn into one of these guys that for no reason at all becomes a total liability some nights. He was really young and raw, but I'll never forget his -4 night vs. OTT back in 2009 where he was on the ice for all their goals.

Frankly I simply cannot believe we made out with just losing Butler... my order of importance went WEBER/GRAGNANI (basically even for me), SEKERA, and then BUTLER. When I heard it was only Butler and Byron I was shocked. I have to give this one to Darcy. We took on some salary but that is a heck of a trade... even if Regehr doesn't totally meet expectations, we win the deal imo. Unless of course Butler goes nuts and becomes a perennial all star...

I know there alot of Weber love here and I was impressed with his season and even his playoffs...... but I am still not completly sold on him going forward. Before this season I actaully figured we might let him walk cause nothing I saw in his game stood out.

I will say I am excited to see how he progresses with Regehr on this roster as a example of how to do things. I think after this season we will see what Weber is gonna be for this team

Signing Weber makes a ton of sense. The biggest question marks in his game - skating and outlets - have been mostly resolved.

He's really improved his skating. As far as potential, I think we've already seen the upside.

Now it is just a matter of developing that veteran savvy.
