shrader Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 Question is...our center problem. Does this added salary take us out of the Richards Derby? If so, what other prominent centers are there to trade for? Thornton? Sharp? I don't think they'll be a serious player with Richards. They'll get their center through the trade market which will include some money being moved off the roster in another deal. They could be in on Laich too, but the money could go a bit high there since its the free market.
Sterling Archer Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 Pominville, Adam to SJ for Marleau or Thornton Pominville, Adam, pick to Pit for Malkin Pominville into time machine to 1996 for Sergei Federov
shrader Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 I see this: Myers-Regehr Sekera-Leopold Grags-Weber McNabb/ Pysyk as reserves? Pysyk will still be in juniors. He's too young to go to the AHL and they definitely won't keep a 19 year old around to be a reserve. I guess there's always the chance that he floors everyone in camp and sticks, but it is not very likely.
sabres1970 Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 Question is...our center problem. Does this added salary take us out of the Richards Derby? If so, what other prominent centers are there to trade for? Thornton? Sharp? Regehr I believe is a 5 mil cap hit. That gives us roughly 15 million to resign whatever free agents we want back and add at least one more forward from FA. This trade does very little impact, especially with the raised cap.
Taro T Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 Mags looked AWFULLY good when the bullets were flying. I'd start him over Montador or Sekara any day... He did. Lindy also is very hesitant to give a young guy significant ice time. (Myers being the obvious exception, and even he saw much less ice time in Oct and Nov of '09 than later.) And there is also the inevitable 'sophomore slump' that I expect he'll face. There'll be enough injuries that he'll get into the lineup soon enough, but if all were healthy I don't see him there on opening night if Monty is back or if they've signed a different #5/6 vet.
Knightrider Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 What a pleasure it is reading through this... It sure beats the summer of 07.
sabres1970 Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 I truly believe that MAG's performance in the postseason should grant him a roster spot. It seemed every time we scored, he got the assist.
Braedon Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 What a pleasure it is reading through this... It sure beats the summer of 07. This. I will sleep with permagrin tonight.
iliketofrolic666 Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 BUF-CGY trade is not complete and will not be completed tonight. Perhaps tomorrow but nothing is certain at this point. TSN Bob McKenzie
Robviously Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 Mags looked AWFULLY good when the bullets were flying. I'd start him over Montador or Sekara any day... Gragnani was probably one of our three best players in the Philly series this Spring. He should be a Sabre and in the line-up come October.
beerme1 Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 The condom broke, sorry sweetie. Seriously Kotalik is not a problem, Amerks will love him. I'm finally in and this is the news I get?
IKnowPhysics Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 I love the acquisition of Ales Kotalik. ...for Rochester. IF the deal is as currently rumored (Regehr, his salary, & 2nd <-> Byron & Butler), you've got to take something undesirable this way or throw something else in... If they don't get Kotalik, the price probably was sending Ennis the other way along w/ Butler and Byron. I was being sincere. I think if he's mentally ready to accept a veteran role in the AHL, I think it's a great acquisition to show Amerks fans that Pegula wins everdaydayallthetimeateverylevel.
Buffalo Sports Man Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 I'm happy with this trade, if it goes down as described. I prefer Weber to Butler, Byron is not an NHL player so he's really 'just another prospect' and the pick is a pick. To those who think it's too much, we didn't lose either of our top D prospects (Sekera or Gragnani) nor our top prospect overall (Luke Adam). We're adding a legit tough veteran defender. A veteran defender who is known to fans in Calgary as "The Tunnel of Death." And if we have to eat Kotalik's contract, who cares? If it were any other player who was marginal and a salary dump, we'd say, "Okay, that's fine I guess." He's (probably) not going to be on the team [see below] and that Terry Pegula is willing to eat that contract to make the team better, who are we to say he shouldn't spend money that way. All that being said (and I know this won't necessarily be a popular sentiment)... think about this talk after the trade is formalized, "Ales," Lindy says a few weeks before camp, "You can play in Rochester and be near the top when it comes to wingers on the powerplay in the AHL. No one will think any less of you than they already do, a salary we had to eat to get Robyn. Or, you can nut up and shut everyone up by earning that little bit of bumper room we have under the cap and make this damned team." Tweet of the Night (From WGR 550's Jeremy White @JeremyWGR) Thomas Vanek is so lazy he asked the #Sabres to reacquire ales kotalik so as not to learn his new address for baby shower invitations.
DumbPuck Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 I'm new to this whole draft thing as I've never paid attention to it in the past. I look at this trade and all the excitement I've seen surrounding it and I don't understand. I feel naive, but I could have sworn what we REALLY wanted to pickup in the off-season was some center-man. I get that a veteran D would be helpful, but I don't see how Regher (sp?) doesn't just turn into another Morrison or Montadour. I am underwhelmed by this trade as I think the issue with centers is greater at the moment. Do you all think there is more to come for the Sabres trade-wise still?

You have to understand that regher is a top end shutdown defenseman. With our crop of young blueliners he's exactly what we need. IMO given the limited crop of centers available this year, this should have been the top priority. It's just as, if not more important. You can't play offense if your D cant get the puck. I'll put it plainly, on a purely defensive perspective, regher is far superior to bieksa and erhoff, who were two names touted endearingly on this board. It's an excellent trade. it brings raw physicallity and nastiness to an otherwise relatively passive and young defense. Miller will love having robyn around. The best part is, if rumors are correct about what we gave up (butler byron and a 2nd) we still have our roster in tact for the most part, and have room to sign all RFA's and even a top center. It's the first night of the draft. There is plenty of time for more roster shakeups, this is just a big step in the right direction.

We need a center, as you said. We also need an experienced D. If you saw the playoffs, you obviously were aware that our D wasn't strong enough to hold off the Philly forwards through 7 games. Our D is good, but inexperienced. That's where Regehr comes in. This guy is the Tim Horton of today. What Horton did for Shony, Regehr can do for Myers. We need to address the center position. Roy is not a first line center - I think you know that. We need one badly. Of course that means it will cost us but we do have assets. The final thing we need is a strong LW. These are easier to obtain and I expect Darcy will address both issues this off-season. Don't you miss the Entry Draft again! Why you haven't seen it before now is beyond me.

For those saying he will be in Rochester, i doubt it. Pegula has always said he's about making players happy and helping their families. I've heard multiple times tonight Kotalik's buyout is only $1 million. I bet we buy him out, and Ales and his family return to Czech Republic, instead of rotting in the AHL. Let's face it, he would be going home after the year anyways. Unless he will want to stay and prove himself? I doubt it though. Now that would be some Pegula magic... lol

I am underwhelmed by this trade as I think the issue with centers is greater at the moment. Do you all think there is more to come for the Sabres trade-wise still? All due respect. Comparing Regehr to Morrison or Monty and saying you are underwhelmed indicates you are young. Young but understanding that the team needs a center. The team agenda for the off season was a shut down "tunnel of death" type d man and a #1 center. How are we doing so far? Boo yah

It's also worth noting that there's the prospect of him being sent across the pond, a la the what was considered by the Hawks to bury Huet's hit in Europe during the off season last year.
beerme1 Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 This guy is a mans man make no mistake. As has been discussed the guy gave a hometown discount to stay there. No reason to give it up easily. People, people, lets all welcome Regehr  Wow I am loving this. What the hell is July 1st going to be like this year? :death: Regehr, 31, is coming off his 11th season as a Flame. The six-foot-three, 225-pound blueliner serves as a steady force on back end and would no doubt prove valuable for any team looking to tighten up defensively. A product of Rosthern, Sask., Regehr left money on the table in July of 2007 upon signing a five-year contract extension worth $20 million. “How I envision the no-movement clause working . . . you just work together with the team and come away with a solution that works for both side,” Regehr said. “There’s lots of moving pieces.” Read more: http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/Regehr+deal+with+Buffalo/5003881/story.html#ixzz1QGdrkycC
thesportsbuff Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 Good thing everybody "moved on" 10 pages ago :-D
nucci Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 There's no way we are shipping Butler, Byron, and a 2nd for Regehr and Kotalik. In fact, Kotalik is not an asset to the Sabres in this trade, he's strictly a salary dump for the Flames and will probably play in Rochester. So if you look at it that way, the trade would be Butler, Byron, 2nd rounder, and eating Koatlik's salary in exchange for Robyn Regehr. Horrible trade if its true - Calgary gets three solid assets and a salary dump and Buffalo gets only one good player? No way. I'm guessing Buffalo gets the 2nd from Calgary because Darcy isn't that stupid. Questionable.
cmjoyce113 Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 This trade being complete really excites me. I know Miller takes a lot of flack on this board and rightfully so some times but I think a big D Man like Regehr will help him tremendously. I keep hearing about the way it will help other players... I am looking past that. I think overall it makes the Sabres a better team with him on it, period. I hope we can get a decent center through trade and make a splash or two in free agency. It's nice to be truly excited about the Sabres again.
