tom webster Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=369480 Hate to say I told you so, well no I don't. Obviously means a few things; 1) Fewer teams in cap hell 2) Some teams will need "high" cap players with low salary to hit cap floor 3) Pominville's contract don't look so bad. Equivalent of $3.2 million first year after lock out. 4) Stafford's deal looks great. $2.4 million equivalent.
Weave Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 We just got a little more room to fit all the pieces. The downside is every other team in the league just got a little more room to FA shop as well. I wonder how many additional teams are now using their own internal cap instead of the league cap?
SabresFan526 Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 While the Cap has certainly gone up, by about $1.5 million more than I had expected, there are still teams in Cap Hell right now. Philadelphia is still not in good shape from a cap perspective even after the cap has gone up. In the Flyers case, this is about enough money to get them to re-sign the RFAs and maybe (just maybe) keep Leino under contract. However, this does nothing to solve the top end of the Cap issues that they still have as it relates to signing Bryzgalov. For what Bryzgalov is rumored to be looking for in terms of salary, the Flyers are still going to have to make a trade even with the number going up. If Bryzgalov is looking for something in the range of $5-7 million, there's no question, someone's got to get traded, and I expect it to be Jeff Carter. As for the Sabres, this is certainly workable and helps a lot. I think it gives the Sabres enough money to get their needs this offseason, which is a #1 Center and a top pair defenseman. The Sabres have about $19 million in Cap Space as of right now that allows them to re-sign all of their restricted free agents, and likely about $12-15 million leftover to go after the UFA/Trade Market. Given the lack of top line centers available in the UFA market after Brad Richards, I think the Sabres are going to have to make a trade here, but they have plenty of money to go after a top pair defenseman and fill other holes on the roster. So, this is good for Buffalo in my mind. I would also assume it gives them enough cap flexibility by staying around $1-2 million below the cap as they have stated that they want to do due to Injuries, call-ups, etc.
LGR4GM Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 ladies and gentlemen, tpegs just got the leeway to do w/e he wants and some of our bad contracts arent anymore... this is going to be a interesting 10-12 days.

I wonder if this will take more players to Arby with the thought that with the walk-away ....teams will still have money.
That Aud Smell Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 interesting - and, yeah, score one for darcy on the stafford contract. think stafford's not just a little sour with his agent right now?
X. Benedict Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 interesting - and, yeah, score one for darcy on the stafford contract. think stafford's not just a little sour with his agent right now? On the opposite side...I think Laich's agent just peed his pant a little in joy.
LGR4GM Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 On the opposite side...I think Laich's agent just peed his pant a little in joy. why because Laich now get legitimately get 4-4.5 for 5 years no problem now? agreed! I would pee my pants, dance around the room, slap a baby, and pillage some women if someone told me I was about to get an extra 1-2million bucks for the next few years.

rickshaw Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 Bad news for you Bieksa lovers. He told reporters at locker clean out day that he wants to stay in Vancouver and said that guys take a pay cut of some sort to play there. He said he's not too concerned and believes something will get done in the next week or so. Christian Erhoff might not be so willing but did sound like he wanted to stay as well, just depended on the offer.

OverPowerYou Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 I don't remember Drury ever saying he would take a pay cut to stay here. Well, pretty much everything BUT the paycut. He was certain a deal would get done and he mentioned that he wanted to stay.
shrader Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 Players tend to say the right things at this time of the year, but then suddenly have a change of heart when the offers come in. I can't really blame them.

I can't really blame them. Days before free agency: "Of course my team is my first option, I would love nothing more than to stay here the rest of my career...." Day after free agency - signed with new team for more money: "As hard as it is to leave Team A, I had to consider my family and the future..."

Something along the lines of, "I want to be a Sabre, I would take less than going out on the open market, and the Sabres have the first chance and best chance of signing me." Of course we know the story there. Some of that has to do with the management and some of that has to do with the player, but I specifically remember Briere saying something very similar and signing with Philadelphia. Oh well.

They made it very clear that Danny was an afterthought and that Drury was the one that they were keeping. It's not like they were actively trying to sign him, but he played hard ball. I may not have like Danny that much, but I never faulted him for taking that offer.
SabresFan526 Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 you are correct, sir. Wow, I was pretty damn close. But, I did remember him saying something like this. Cool.
spndnchz Posted June 20, 2011 Report Posted June 20, 2011 Oh Come On. He only had 95 points and you wanted him to get re-signed? /sarcasm
LGR4GM Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 you know i was thinking the other day that the way the salary cap goes up doesnt make sense. It goes up based off of revenue and sales. But for a good long time it will go up because the casual fan will buy into the NHL, meaning you will have more fans but it will dilute the number of diehard ones. That in turn makes it more expensive for owners to operate so they raise prices on things like tickets to compensate and then after some time the league becomes really expensive and the hard core fan cant afford it anymore because most ppl do not have a steady 3-5% increase in their salaries every year to meet the 3-5% increase in the cap that is almost but not truly predictable. IDK, seems like there is a fundamental problem there but I cant really formulate it into words.

LGR4GM Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 Bettman did strike a $2 billion 10 year TV deal. exactly but will that happen again? will that revenue keep the league competitive or will the continual rise in the cap turn this into the NFL or NBA. I like the fact all 30 teams get a shot but there is slowly starting to be separation. IDK, i cant explain what I really mean so I apologize but basically i wonder if the continual increase in salary will cuz a continual increase in fan prices making the sport suffer somehow.

IDK, seems like there is a fundamental problem there but I cant really formulate it into words. It's not like that has ever given you pause in the past. And X points out correctly where the bulk of the latest salary cap increase stems from. The CBA is very clear on what constitutes revenues to be included in the cap and what expenses will be subtracted out before determining the players' cut. The revenues/costs aren't the same as what will show up on a P&L but they're verified by 3rd party and realistic. It sounds like the NFL is heading towards a similar system (if the rumors coming out in the past couple of days have any basis in reality) but unfortunately for Bills fans it also doesn't sound like that league is doing much to improve revenue sharing amongst the teams. exactly but will that happen again? will that revenue keep the league competitive or will the continual rise in the cap turn this into the NFL or NBA. I like the fact all 30 teams get a shot but there is slowly starting to be separation. IDK, i cant explain what I really mean so I apologize but basically i wonder if the continual increase in salary will cuz a continual increase in fan prices making the sport suffer somehow. There is, as you correctly noted, a correlation between revenues and salaries (when S=0.57R there HAS to be a correlation). The salaries are not what is driving increased ticket pricing (the causation is closer to the other way 'round), inflation, the C$/US$ exchange rate, and the parameters for small market teams to qualify for revenue sharing are more significant drivers of increased prices. Small market revenues need to increase at least at the average of leaguewide revenues (calculated in US$) in order to qualify for a 'full share' of their particular revenue share (amongst other conditions).
