spndnchz Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 Do we really need Grier and Nieds' "veteran-ness" anymore? I liked Nieds in the playoffs, def stepped it up. I like Grier's penalty kill. Aren't they both a bit slow and unnecessary now? We have guys that have been there, dun that. Why waste salary?

Grier has hit the wall and Nieds while I love how he suddenly appeared as a player for us is not worth the first 82 games of agony to get to that point. So no we don't need them and they will be gone. Grier will be missed but this is still a business.
DumbPuck Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 No ... but don't lose Lalime or we're finished.
ROC Sabres Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 No ... but don't lose Lalime or we're finished. He's been the biggest cornerstone of this team since he joined. I couldn't imagine a team without him.
thesportsbuff Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 I think the general consensus would quite obviously be that we should move on from those players. But for what it's worth, I would take Neidermayer back before Grier. Grier is just too slow. Niedermayer just has hands of stone, but he found a way to step it up when it mattered.

Just my opinion but to me it was like that last burst of adrenalin before someone dies. It was his last kick at the can so to speak. That being said I do believe you have to have a certain mix of veterans in those big games to help the kids along. Are there others in this league that could help more? I think so.
sabres1970 Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 Not to degrade their individual efforts over the past season (or for Grier seasons) but I can't see the Sabres keeping either of them. Grier only offers the Sabres his penalty kill abilities and although that's important, I can;t see them ensuring him a roster spot. The same thing goes for Nieds playoff leadership. There are so many options the Sabres can go with in terms of their starting line up next year. Adam, Kassian, Foligno, Byron and Mancari are all capable of sneaking in to some type of role for next year. Not to mention the big offseason the ownership has all but promised up until this point. I also don't see either of these two wanting to spend time in the minors at their age so I doubt they'll even be associated with the organization in 2011. But I thank them for their efforts.
Hawerchuk Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 I like Grier on the PK but other than that he didn't do much. Neids was pathetic during the regular season. Played OK in the Playoffs, but sorry, both should be gone.

Lots of veteran forwards on this team already. They don't always play like vets, but most of them aren't kids anymore and haven't been for awhile.
Two or less Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 I could see Grier taking over Adams job once they make him assistant coach.
Taro T Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 I could see Grier taking over Adams job once they make him assistant coach. You could see Grier as a SHOOTING COACH?!?!? Really? The only part of his game that kept him from being a $6MM/year player is what you could see him coaching? Maybe they could talk to Rayzor to see if he ever gets tired of working between the benches, if he'd be willing to be either the power skating instructor or goaltending coach if Corsi ever decides to move on. ;)
VansTheMans Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 I'd rather bring up the kids and let them give 110% in the place of lackluster Nieds.
dudacek Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 Like both as people. Time for the core and/or a new acquisition to be the leaders. Make Grier an assistant coach. Thank Nieds for his help and move on.
drnkirishone Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 Neds can go i don't care for him. Grier thou.......... I would like him around the younger players to set a example for them. But I would like some fresh blood on the bottem 6. I guess I would like to see him in a coaching role or at the least in a limited playing role for the team come next season

He was a player development coach. The only thing funnier then your sarcastic post is if you actually did a little bit of research, you'd see Grier has scored like 100 more careers goals then Adams.

LGR4GM Posted June 6, 2011 Report Posted June 6, 2011 Reasons Griere and Nieds are obsolete: 1) We just played a whole season and they should have had time to impart their veteran leadership. 2) Did they help win us anything? (No a spot in the playoffs doesnt count) 3) If we want grit we have guys who are faster, younger, and grittier. (Myers, Weber, Gerbe, Kassian) 4) They are old and slow (Lidstrom is an exception not a norm) 5) We could pay guys who would give us more, less 6) Bring in Laich and make Goose your 4th center and Nieds and Grier are beyond useless 7) We grew last year into a young fiesty team that is learning it takes hard work to win, they learned through the playoff push and grind not from Grier or Nieds 8) We have so many RW that Grier would be 6th on the depth chart IMO (Pommers, Drew, Boyes, Kaleta, Kassian, Griere) 9) Both guys now have another 82 game season of wear and tear on their bodies to slow them more 10) Keeping them for "Veteran leadership" is a slap in the face to ppl who have been here longer and are better. (Vanek, Roy, Pommers, Goose, even Myers) The first 4 are vets now. They have been on this team since 05-06 and thats 6 seasons. 11) Keeping them would be retaining the status quo of "We can win this year even though we have the same team that lost last year" of course keeping Roy Van pommers and goose also does this. But they are productive
