inkman Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 Kevin Devine was on WGR this morning discussing the prospects in the system. As one would imagine he had great things to say about Kassian, Foligno, & McNabb. He did make a clear distinction that Kassian was much more offensively gifted than Foligno. The most interesting thing, IMHO, was his response to HoSi's question about trading into the top 3 picks in the draft, as all of the top 3 picks for the last decade (as we have discussed) have turned into great players. Devine literally laughed out loud at the question and said nobody trades those picks unless you want to trade Miller. What he did state was that the Sabres would use picks and prospects to trade for a proven player. While I find this encouraging, until I see said player in a Sabres uni, I'll hold my reservations.
Derrico Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 I suspected that to be the case. If us message board gurus can figure out that the top 3 picks have been near sure fire hits, I'm sure an NHL GM has this down. That being the case I doubt it will be easy to trade into one of those spots. I'm willing to trade out of our first if it means picking up a guy that can help this club immediately.

Based on the recent results, this isn't super encouraging.

I actually think the problem with all those 2nd rounders is that they weren't retained - for whatever reason. Most likely an internal budget cap. Zubrus, Torres, Moore ----- Boyes will be kept.

I'd be ready to part with kassian, Foligno or McNabb. If the sabres are going to make a splash, they will have to part with at least one of them. I'd hate to see it but if they land the right player, it will be worth it.

He's a big powerful rw who i feel will be a 30goal scorer in this league. Did i mention hes big and mean?

Sorry, I only got as far as "trade Stafford" Didn't realise this was actually about Kassian.

Sterling Archer Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 I'll part with Foligno and McNabb eons before I'd give up Kassian. He's a huge piece of the puzzle. Foligno is going to be a third line grinder at best and we have enough of those or can easily find another. And the Sabres have plenty of defensive prospects.
X. Benedict Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 Just listened to that interview. Interesting to hear how he sized up the 1st round of the draft: Top tier talent: 4 or 5 deep. 2nd tier: picks 5 to 17 all about the same level.
inkman Posted May 24, 2011 Author Report Posted May 24, 2011 Kassian is the the best of the three but if you trade stafford... Drew Stafford will be on the Sabres this coming season, count on it.

Robviously Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 As long as Kassian ends up in the western conference. The last place I want Kassian to end up is in Philly or Ottawa. I'm reluctant to trade Kassian because he's the type of player the Sabres haven't had in a looooooong time. I'm actually worried about trading any of these guys since it's been EIGHT YEARS since Regier made a good trade (Drury) and I don't trust him all that much anymore.
shrader Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 Sabres pick 16th, just before the dropoff. A very calculated statement from Devine if you ask me.
X. Benedict Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 A very calculated statement from Devine if you ask me. Actually, I think it sizes up that way too. But I don't think it hurts to let people know it.
shrader Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 Actually, I think it sizes up that way too. But I don't think it hurts to let people know it. Yeah, the top 5 thing seems fair. That 2nd tier seems like a bit of a random number though. There's probably a 3 or 4 pick cushion on that range, but obviously he's going to want his pick to fall within there.

I'd consider Jensen or Brodin quality players within that 2nd tier, yet I've seen them ranked or mocked into the low 20s. So damn subjective. Amazing though, we JUST pick within Devine's 2nd tier. ;)
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 A very calculated statement from Devine if you ask me. Every now and then throughout my life I have a manic epiphany where I am so excited or down on a situation, that I go above and beyond a seemingly rational investment in it. When I hear stuff like this come from the front office, I am convinced without a shadow of a doubt that my view about this team is correct. The loser mentality to even say something like this is beyond a joke. If the Sabres were a stock, I would short the daylights out of Hockey Heaven. This is 98% the same culture that has been locked in place. The dog and pony show they must have done on Mr Pegula.......

If anything he seemed to be signaling that this is a year the team may trade the pick and prospects for a player.

Haven't listened to the interview, so I'm just basing this on the comments in the thread, but I don't see why saying there are about 12 2nd tier players in this year's draft is part of the "loser mentality" when he's also stated that they are looking to drop picks and prospects for a "proven player" (Ink's words, I'm assuming they are also KD's) and he has 1 of those 12 picks.

I should apologize in advance for fueling the latest "GoDD cries about something" series of posts. To me, there's nothing wrong with the comment. Everyone wants to drive up the positive perception of the position they're in, speak highly of the position and then increase it's value. That's exactly where I'm coming from when I say it was calculated.

I also don think it's loser mentality. Probably just softening up the fanbase for the loss of the pick, if they do indeed move it.
X. Benedict Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 I also don think it's loser mentality. Probably just softening up the fanbase for the loss of the pick, if they do indeed move it. I think what Devine said was pretty close to what EJ McGuire was saying in November. That there were 4 top guys, and maybe that second group goes to #18. Devine says today maybe it goes to #17. (I think Biggs has fallen out of both groups since). It was pretty much a throw-away statement that I found interesting. ... I think what Devine says will pretty much echoes the opinion of central scouting and most scouts in general. (except for how the Sabre will approach it...sounds like they are ready to deal on draft day).

I don't even think it is on Devine's horizon how the fans feel yet.....the combine starts Sunday. The entire valuation process isn't finished yet.
