SwampD Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 This should be the slogan for Buffalo instead of "For Real"! I hear you. I don't care. Just looks pretty ballsy. Viva la Open skate! Don't forget though, it isn't Buffalo. It's Springville. The "politics" are even smaller there. Who else would build it? I still find it funny that when we needed my parent's cabin leveled, some 10+ years ago, Pat Kaleta was one of the Kaleta Bros that had to crawl underneath it.
calti Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 Reports that Kaleta, along with his Uncle have got the go ahead and $5.5 million to build a youth rink and sports complex in Springville off the 219. Full article. Nice job Patty! So---Kaleta raises money thru his charity for disabled/disadvantaged kids---which will go to/thru his uncle's co. to build an ice rink/sports complex....Maybe I have been around too long and have become too worldy-wise and cynical. But come on guys..
wacollin Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 This happens, to some degree, on every project everywhere. As long as the community benefits from it in some way, I say meh. I used to live near Springville and had to travel to the Southtowns. WMCA to play hockey. Can't speak to the cost and who is building it, but this will go a long way to helping the community. Why does everything need to be built inner-city? Kids are kids.
shrader Posted May 23, 2011 Report Posted May 23, 2011 Actually there is, NHL ice is 200 x 85. Olympic is 200 x 100. Most arenas post 1970s build NHL sized ice. Olympic is uncommon except in a number of college arenas that thought it was going to be the "new thing" back in the 1990s I believe. And most of those seem to be out west.

NHL rinks are supposed to be 85 x 200. I'm not sure when that standard was put in place. Historically, there has been a great deal of variability in the size of rinks, including the Aud. It was the historic disparity I was referring to when I mentioned the lack of a standard. There aren't many Olympic size rinks south of the border, but there are a lot of them in Ontario. My kids have played on them many times over the years.
buffalohsix Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 I'm just going to take a good thing being done for what it is, not for who's behind it
