spndnchz Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 Reports that Kaleta, along with his Uncle have got the go ahead and $5.5 million to build a youth rink and sports complex in Springville off the 219. Full article. Nice job Patty!
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 Ain't that sweet! A local politician who oversees the work of all the contractors in his town now enlists his nephew who raised funds through a non-profit to spend said funds in his uncle's town on a project to be built by the very same contractors which his uncle is responsible to oversee that their work meets quality of standards on behalf of and in protection of the public. Just tugs at my heartstrings.....

RuffMuff Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 i dont know what was wrong with flooding the tennis courts with water every year, worked for me. Plus we had the outdoor lights....

korab rules Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 I'll take "Multiple Conflicts of Interest" for $5.5 million, Alex....... Easy for you to cast aspersions. This is something that would NEVER happen without Pat behind it. You have no idea what that rink will do for hockey in particular and youth sports in general in that community. That rink will be a cornerstone of the community's long, long winters for generations to come. I usually find your snide commentary entertaining, but you are way off base here. Stop being a douchenozzle for 5 minutes and give a little credit where credit is due.

I refuse to criticize an individual or individuals providing for our local youth. WNY has enough negativity, it's refreshing when something positive happens. Regardless of the politics.

I hope it's Kosher as could be, but this is as ripe a scenario for misappropriation of funds as you could find. A charity blows it's entire wad on one project in a small town where a family member not only has direct contact to the contractors, but is also responsible for enforcing and policing the same contractors for the safety of the public. The same contractors that are taking down a major score because of his contacts. The fact that Kaleta himself on the ice is about as moral as Lucifer....it makes a rational person scratch his head a bit. If this was Pat LaFontaine....I would be hesitant to question. Again...hope it's kosher....yes it will benefit the community....but let's just say i didn't know about that charity to begin with, and I will tuck it in the back of my mental rolodex now.

Maybe it would make more sense if I compared it to Ryan Miller using Steadfast Foundation funds to buy gift certificates to his clothing store he owns and then giving the certificates to kids with cancer at Roswell. headline reads: "Champion Miller Takes Hundreds of Sick Kids on Shopping Spree."

Rob Ray was more enforcer than dirty but he is one of the most charitable hockey players I've ever seen.

Local (ie springville and surrounding areas) contractors will have little to nothing to do with this rink - $5.5 Million is a lot of money even for a rink - If one ice sheet, it will have a multi field indoor soccer/lacrosse/name your sport played on grass on the other side. This could very well be a two sheet facility with indoor turf on the other. I spend all winter touring hockey facilities all over NY, ontario, massachewspits, Pa and NJ. The ones I like the most are the ones with indoor fields and a gym (weights and treadmills, not a gymnasium) up above the centralized locker rooms looking down on the ice and the turf. The community rink in Cortland should be the model. It only has one sheet of ice and one field but it is a great facility and is always PACKED. My point is that local contractors will have almost noting to do with this facility. You are talking major iron work for the spans required for ice hockey and fields. The ice making equipment is also highly specialized. This is going to be one BIG barn. I don't think ABC contracting from Main Street in Springville will get the job A building inspector isn't a politician: he is hired by the town, not elected. Your suggestion of fraud and kickbacks is slanderous.

Rob Ray was more enforcer than dirty but he is one of the most charitable hockey players I've ever seen. A lot of the enforcers are the greatest guys in the world off the ice. Kaleta is probably doing this 100% out of godwill. It just looks as bad as you can get to me, whether shenanigans or not are going on.

If Pat starts his own construction company and then hires it to build the rink then your analogy is accurate. At present, you are merely slandering people who are trying to do a whole lot of good.

Stop being a douchenozzle for 5 minutes and give a little credit where credit is due. Building an NHL size rink for 5.5 million is field of dreams stuff. Will probably won't get it done without huge investment of time and resources from the community gratis. And the incentives amount to $100,000 in tax breaks.

No one builds a rink that isn't NHL size, whatever that is, as there is no standard. $5.5 million is much more than needed to build a rink. Our youth hockey organization has looked into it.

At present, you are merely slandering people who are trying to do a whole lot of good. You saying I am slandering is a lot more slandering than me saying this doesn't look good. Thank chz.....if she didn't say it was his uncle involved, I would have never even paid attention. On Kaleta's charity site, it lists the programs involved as Cradle Beach and Roswell. I would give to those all day. Burried 7 paragraphs deep in the mission statement is a blurb about helping a project of a sports complex to bring hockey to a "rural setting". I'm all for buying equipment for inner city kids and such, but if you want to build a $5.5 million barn in your hometown and partner with your Uncle's company to do it (Two 19 Sports, Inc.), then I think young Mr Kaleta should wait until he is financially able to do so with his own funds and not use a foundation seemingly geared towards sick kids to do so. The Sabres Alumni Foundation does great work and supports all sorts of local initiatives, including youth hockey. They spearhead special events for special causes as well. Last I looked they are helping to build a sports field for handicapped children. I applaud the effort and contribute to their cause because I know how hard they work in the community. Again, this project could be squeaky clean.....but Larry Quinn, Uncle Vito and Goldman Sachs are all saying, "You gotta be $#!++!* me!"

Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 20, 2011 Report Posted May 20, 2011 Looking up more things, this was a stated goal to build this thing. Pat Kaleta's heart, himself is probably 100 genuine in all of this. He has done a lot of good things off the ice. I hope everything works out well for the community. There are plenty of bigger fish to worry about out there. I just got a kick out of this whole scenario. Maybe if we are lucky, there will be a bond deal floated in the future that can be picked up at 20 cents on the dollar.

Our youth hockey organization has looked into it. Actually there is, NHL ice is 200 x 85. Olympic is 200 x 100. Most arenas post 1970s build NHL sized ice. Olympic is uncommon except in a number of college arenas that thought it was going to be the "new thing" back in the 1990s I believe.
Wyldnwoody44 Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 Was the Nike Base in Hamburg pretty much your best option previously? Yes for indoors it was, my buddy owns a pond tho and we had that set up real nice for outdoor hokey it took a lot of grooming but it was a blast
wonderbread Posted May 21, 2011 Report Posted May 21, 2011 DoDD isn't winning any friends tonight. The Miller comparison regardless of how you feel about it was a true masterpiece! IMO its all about who you know and what you know about them. This world is filled with payoffs and "philanthropy" Misappropriation smishappropriation. If the public can use it then I say great. Will they encourage people to get out and enjoy one another? Its not like the kids have anything to do in late November cept drugs n rock n' roll! I sez build it. My only question is how would PA feel about this? He's probaly reading this stewing in his own juices!
