Whoomp, there it is.

American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced today that the league’s Board of Governors has unanimously approved the sale of the Rochester Americans franchise from Arrow Express Sports to the Buffalo Sabres.

The Sabres will return to Rochester as the Americans’ National Hockey League affiliate beginning with the 2011-12 season.

“We are pleased to welcome Terry Pegula and the Buffalo Sabres as owners in the American Hockey League,” said Andrews. “The Rochester Americans and Buffalo Sabres have a rich history together, and reuniting these two outstanding franchises is great news for hockey fans in western New York.”

The Rochester Americans, who enjoyed a 29-year affiliation with the Sabres from 1979-2008, are the second-oldest team in the American Hockey League, set to begin their 56th season in 2011-12. The Americans appeared in nine Calder Cup Finals while affiliated with Buffalo and won three Calder Cup championships (1983, 1987, 1996) during that time.

Having recently completed its historic 75th anniversary season, the American Hockey League continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 87 percent of all players competing in the NHL are AHL graduates, and through the years the American Hockey League has been home to more than 100 honored members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

From Sabres.com

The Buffalo Sabres today announced they have signed a purchase agreement with the Rochester Americans hockey club. The AHL Board of Governors unanimously approved the transaction earlier today. The Sabres also announced their affiliation agreement with the Portland Pirates has ended.

The Buffalo Sabres will have no further comment at this time. The Sabres expect to hold a press conference in Rochester next week to set forth their plans for the franchise.

Cool.

Any indication on how this will affect Styres lease negotiations w/ Ra-cha-cha regarding the expired lease for the Kin-ig-it Hawks?

In Amerks release: Styres will retain ownership of the Rochester Knighthawks franchise of the National Lacrosse League.

Wildcat--please come back and visit once in a while, and please let us know (once Portland's next affiliation is known) what board you'll be posting Pirates news on.

It seems the workings of this deal go back to last November.

Roy- Deal for Sabres to purchase Amerks goes back before Pegula purchased Sabres. Petrovek estimated Nov. when talks began.

So Terry gets turned down initially by Tommy, decides to get Amerks, ends up getting Sabres, and Amerks.

Roy- Petrovek wouldn't name new affiliate but my sources tell me it is the Phoenix Coyotes.

Proximity almost mandates it, don't you think?

There was NEVER any doubt Styres keeps Cody & crew. Question was more geared towards whether they stay put or does Curt significantly shorten his commute.

Just read that they are still renegotiating the lease.
