X. Benedict Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Tough spot for Dineen to start out in. He pretty much mirrored the Sabres system in Portland and now goes to a team that is the epitome of neutral zone trap.
wildcat48 Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Dineen to be hired by Florida Panthers Published on: 31st May, 2011 by Chris Roy After six years behind the bench as head coach of the Portland Pirates, Kevin Dineen is finally getting an opportunity to ply his trade in the NHL. The Florida Panthers have set a 3pm press conference at the BankAtlantic Center on Wednesday where Dineen will be named the 11th coach in franchise history. Link>>>>
JJFIVEOH Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 Good for Dineen! I have been watching the Panthers transformation and all I can say is they have a bright future. They have been communicating with the fans, they laid out the groundwork and told everybody straight out that they probably weren't going to do much last year. They are going to be very active in the offseason. They have so much money to spend, not just extra money, but they are something like $15 mil under the minimum cap. So they have no choice but to spend. They have a ton of great prospects and with the addition of some free agents during the offseason they should be a successful team down the road. Tallon built the Hawks Cup team, and he's been doing a great job here. IMO a great spot for a new coach to be in, taking over a rebuild instead of trying to be a solution to an underachieving team.

JJ, w/ all due respect, I don't see the reason for the optimism about the Cats. They've cleaned house each of the past 2 years and have not had any success at the AHL level during that time. (Nor before that time for that matter.) Perhaps they have some top talent currently in Juniors / College, but it isn't apparent w/in the minor league system. (Or Ra-cha-cha wouldn't be saying 'we don't know who our parent will be, we just know it ain't gonna be them.') This isn't the best off-season to be planning on spending a ton on FA's, because it isn't a particularily deep pool. I know some of their STH's, and those that I've spoken to are not optimistic at present. What do you see that we're missing? Congrats to Dineen, but as X mentioned above, he's landed in what appears to be a tough spot to get started.
JJFIVEOH Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 They haven't cleaned house like they have over the last year. They also got new majority ownership before last season. Not to mention the fact that Martin served as GM and head coach before leaving. Tallon came in under new owners and is doing quite the same that he did in Chicago, except now he's working on avoiding the situation that tore apart the Hawks last year with salaries. They have 4 picks in the first 2 rounds this year and they had 6 picks in the first 2 rounds last year. Which leaves them with plenty of trade bait if FA doesn't work out. This year's going to be a washout but IMO I haven't seen a team tear themselves apart like this in quite some time. Haha, of course BFLO is my #1 team, but I follow the Panthers obviously because I live here so I root for them when they're not playing the Sabres.

I know the ownership changed, which in the long run can be nothing but a positive. Tallon was impressive in Chicago (until his little 'oops w/ the fax machine'). From a very casual perspective, it definitely appeared that the Cats were cleaning out salary at a pretty predigious clip this year as well. But it didn't appear that they were really getting top notch youth to replace what was going out. (Maybe they brought in brighter prospects than I'm giving them credit for, but it didn't seem they were really bringing in much in the way of pedigree.) While I do expect they'll be on the upswing longterm, I will be mildly surprised if Dineen is still around long enough to enjoy any of the fruits of the massive pruning.
JJFIVEOH Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 Only time will tell. Santorelli turned out to be a surprise this year for sure. But they are still kicking themselves in the azz for letting Grabner go. Dadynov is going to be good and I think Bergfors has something to prove because he knows he's not going anywhere else just yet. Tallon brought Skille over from Chicago, he thinks highly of him. We all know loading up on prospects is risky. But you're right, how soon will this happen. I expected Tallon to give DeBoer more time than he got considering this year was a throw-away and also considering DeBoer had little to work with previously. I guess when you've missed the playoffs for 10 straight years, anything looks promising lol.
HopefulFuture Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 Good for Dineen, he's most certainly earned it. On a side note, with Pegula purchasing Rochester's team and an almost certain re-union of the Sabers and Americans as NHL/AHL affiliation, I wonder where this leaves Portland. I don't think another NHL team is going to come in and affiliate with them, unless anyone has heard anything different? I've always wanted the Sabres to have an ECHL affiliation as well, would love to see Portland go that route, although I realize it's highly doubtful.

There's 30 NHL teams and 30 AHL squads. It's just a question of which partners are dancing when the music stops. If the Sabres end up aligned w/ an ECHL team, as Korab suggested Elmira makes a lot of sense.

My Hunch is Vancouver takes on Portland because of the Manitoba Moose/Winnipeg Jets situation.
korab rules Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 Another thing you'll see from time to time is that in some organizations, their AHL job is more of a stepping stone towards the future, while in others, the NHL assistant job is the better stepping stone. For Buffalo, it seems that the NHL assistant jobs aren't really good spots for future head coaches. If you look at basically everything from the Lindy Ruff tenure, the potential future head coach guys have always been handed the reigns to the AHL team. McCutcheon is the only exception, but he was a bit further along in his coaching career when he came here. Who knows, maybe this mindset could change now with new ownership/management. Ramsey, Torts and Arniel disagree with you.
