spndnchz Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Glen Healy on CBC over the weekend said that Dineen had been given permission to talk to teams about a coaching spot. I'd hate to see him go. He's done such a great job with Portland, but I guess he deserves it. Who coaches Pirates?
mphs mike Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Part of being a class organization is to give people the opportunity to move up. I'd hate to see him go, but think it is appropriate to let him see if he can do better than AHL head coach. If he got another job, I'd love it if Scott Arniel would move from Maintoba to Portland.

Only if Columbus fires him after his first year of coaching. As far as Dineen goes why lose him to another organization. Why not give him his start coaching on the Sabres. PP maybe ? Some change there would be welcome.

I believe, if its like the NFL, they have to give teams permission to interview him for a position that is considered a promotion. For example, an NFL team can't deny a position from being interviewed by another team for a co-ordinator position, unless they promote them to that position or higher. So a coach of a minor league team cannot be denied the opportunity to interview for a NHL coaching position unless the team promotes them to the same position or higher

spndnchz Posted May 16, 2011 Author Report Posted May 16, 2011 I think it more like letting your UFA talk to other teams before July 1st. Dineen was only given a deal for 2010-11 last year.
tom webster Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 They do not have to give permission, but as someone else said, it's the "class" thing to do.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Lindy is like Bill Walsh.....but without the Championships. It's nice to stock the league's coaching/management ranks with ex-Sabre property.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Oops - thanks for the correction. Yeah....it's funny how the rest of the world plays out as "They ain't goin nowhere!"
Two or less Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 In an interview Darcy Regier did with one of the local Portland media people like a month or so ago he pretty much said he's shocked that Dineen hasn't been hired yet to coach a NHL team because he's a great coach and teacher.

There were rumors about him going to tampa Bay last year. I wonder if he rejected or he got rejected. Either way he prolly wishes...

I don't recall him being high on Yzerman's list, but i do remember him being one of the finalists for the Columbus job.

shrader Posted May 16, 2011 Report Posted May 16, 2011 Another thing you'll see from time to time is that in some organizations, their AHL job is more of a stepping stone towards the future, while in others, the NHL assistant job is the better stepping stone. For Buffalo, it seems that the NHL assistant jobs aren't really good spots for future head coaches. If you look at basically everything from the Lindy Ruff tenure, the potential future head coach guys have always been handed the reigns to the AHL team. McCutcheon is the only exception, but he was a bit further along in his coaching career when he came here. Who knows, maybe this mindset could change now with new ownership/management.
Marvelo Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 Dineen might be up for the Washington job once Boudreau gets fired.
Two or less Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 Dineen might be up for the Washington job once Boudreau gets fired. Really think they are gonna fire him? I don't think so.
Marvelo Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 Really think they are gonna fire him? I don't think so. Yeah I think so. Being swept this year after being #1 in the East must have hurt Leonsis. http://fans.capitals.nhl.com/community/topic/57909-official-fire-bruce-boudreau-petition/
X. Benedict Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 Really think they are gonna fire him? I don't think so. they are going to keep him...which I'm happy about. I never thought much of Boudreau.
SabresFan526 Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 they are going to keep him...which I'm happy about. I never thought much of Boudreau. Well, you have to admit, with the exact same players, he took a perennial underachiever that never made the playoffs into a consistent playoff team. So, if you don't think much of Boudreau, I will assume that you have never heard of or think even less about Glen Hanlon. He has to be the worst coach in NHL history as Boudreau took the exact same players including Ovechkin and turned them into a consistent playoff team. Hanlon had the same players and they were the worst team in the NHL at one point during the 2006-2007 season before they brought Boudreau in to turn it all around. I think Boudreau's a fine coach and has done well with the Russian National team, er I mean the Washington Capitals. But, he has not been very good in the NHL playoffs. I will make the argument that part of the problem there isn't the coaching necessarily, but the team he's got. That team is a high scoring, fast, and skill team. Even when they changed to a more defensive system this year, that did not replace the need for gritty players that elevate their game in the playoffs, which I just don't see on the Caps team right now. So, I would argue McPhee is to blame for some of that.
Knightrider Posted May 17, 2011 Report Posted May 17, 2011 I wouldn't rule out Claude Julien getting fired, either. There seems like there is a lot of people blaming him for Seguin's slower than expected development. It had died down, but it was back in force yesterday, after Seguin sat on the bench for 15 minutes after he scored Saturday night.

So, I would argue McPhee is to blame for some of that. I disagree on Boudreau. (actually Hanlon had a very young Ovechkin, Semin, and Laich...that team is completely different now.) I think Washington has been getting by on talent for years. What I've never liked about Boudreau is that there seems to be no accountability for shifts. And I never thought he had control of that team. Simple stuff goes un-addressed...like someone not covering point, or strolling back on the backcheck.....those guys never miss a shift with Boudreau. The big shift this year...Boudreau talked Ovechkin into skating back into the defensive zone which was the new commitment to a defensive system. Seriously, If Washington had Dave Tippet, Tortorella, or Marc Crawford...there would be no amazement at the defensive "buy-in" in Washington. They would already have a cup. Instead they have the #1 "players coach"...which means more fun than business.
spndnchz Posted May 26, 2011 Author Report Posted May 26, 2011 Not sure if the reporter is saying it himself or if he heard it from someone but mentions Dineen added to list for Florida Panthers job. http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_hockey_panthers/2011/05/noel-and-dineen-could-be-in-mix-for-panthers-vacancy.html
Lanny Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 TSNBobMcKenzie It will be Kevin Dineen in FLA as new coach and, as per @OnFrozenPond, news conference is 3 pm ET.
nobody Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Good for him! Congrats. PuckDaddy article For more on Dineen's coaching acumen, check out the Columbus Dispatch on his "inspiration and intelligence" as an AHL coach. One refreshing phrased used here about Dineen's teams, at least for Panthers fans: "They go after the puck, they play with speed and they don't back down or get outworked." As long as that attitude continues as the Sabres prospects move up to the big club - we will be happy I think.
