I'm as leery as anyone when it comes to Reiger but can we give him one off season without penny pinching OSP and meddling Larry Quinn involved in the situation.

If the Sabres start next season with only having acquired mediocre to sub par players, I'm sure you won't be alone in banging the Darcy sucks drum. You just seem to be on this never ending quest to set up this ultimate "I told you so moment". Stop trying so hard.

That was said last off-season.

This team is far from dangerous. Spending time this playoffs looking at the collection of forwards many teams have in the East is all you need to realize how far off the Sabres are.

HA! The playoff team from the East with the LEAST impressive forwards just won the Prince of Wales! Are you arguing for me? They had 1 more goal for and 195 Goals against. Just exactly where I wrote that we want to be.

Please open your mind. Take off the $#*+ colored glasses that you see the roster through.

You are so funny. You use stats when they serve your purpose and anecdotal evidence when the stats don't work. This team had one center for half a year and no centers for the rest and yet had two 30 goal scorer, another forward who scored on a 30 goal pace the second half the year, another forward who finished in the top 10 rookie scorers and another scorer who scored on a 25 goal pace after overcoming concussion problems. They finished near the top of the East in goal scoring . You put a legit center on this team and it has the wingers.

Unfortunately your sick of them or bored with them or whatever so all these teams who can't outscore them are more dangerous then them.

Going back outside. Have a great holiday weekend.

It is kind of early in the off-season to break out the Briere/Connolly Imaginary Point Prorate Machine don't you think.

The team was 9th in scoring and 18th in goals against. When push came to shove in the playoffs the Flyers, with sub par goal-tending, where able to hold the Sabres to 2 goals or less in 4 of the 7 games. With their season on the line the Flyers lit up Miller and 9th rated regular season offense ans 18th rated regular season defense for 10 goals. This "dangerous" team couldn't even bother showing up for game seven.

This team needs more than one center. There needs to be a new core and someone on the offensive end to stand with Myers as the new faces of the franchise.

Read the line above what you bolded. There are no Larry Quinn et al. excuses this year. Everyone knows the financial ties are basically cut so I can't see any Darcy defenders this year if it's status quo.

I am sure you realize that the Canucks where #1 in goal differential in the league this season. Do you know who was #2 in the league in goal differential, a +35 better than the Buffalo Sabres? I may have "$#*+ colored glasses" on, I can still see through them better than the blinders you are wearing.

I love that $56 million in salary is now considered "financial ties."

EXACTLY MY POINT. we don't need a revamp of the forwards to get to that Goal Diff, we need more focus on our defensive play. That is exactly what I'm arguing we need to do. Drive the GA down and play more in the attack zone and we'll probably lead the East in GF. My plan likely gets us an extra +40 to +50 in Goal Diff.

This team creates it's offense from having the defense join the rush aggressively. In order to play the style you want to see it will come at a great cost to the offense. The Sabres had four of their blue-liners ranking in their top 10 in assists. That is by design. Your way does put a lot of pressure on the power play. The Sabres were a solid ninth in PP %, the problem is that they don't create enough opportunities.

The idea goes, better defensemen and 1 or 2 new forwards with defensive strength allow the sabres wingers to be as aggressive as they have ever been and offers more forgiveness to the d-men who join the rush. I'm also counting on Roy being the man he was for the entire 2010 calendar year (64gp/25g/42a/67pts). Which is similar to what he did in 07-08 and 08-09.

Well actually it is considered that if our goal is to win the cup. At 56 million we were a full 8 million less than Philly going into that round. What would 8 million get you? Possibly that top end center we were missing and maybe a decent D man on top of that. Kind of like our wish list going into the offseason. Now we have the resources to get those additional pieces.

Chicago is not in a super cap-happy place (need to sign 5 forwards, 2 D-Men, and a backup goalie with about $8M) and they might be looking to shake things up a bit, I wonder if Patrick Sharp or David Bolland would be available for trade. Both solid defensive centers, sharp with significant offensive upside and bolland with less, but he's never had a season with a negative +/-.

The Sabres were actually less than $4 mil from the Flyers ($59.6 to $55.8).

The only financial constraints the Sabres had were the ridiculous contracts handed out by Regier.

He has also never had a season with over 50% in face-off percentage and lacks in the physical department. For the $3.375 mil a season you would hope to get a lot more in return.

I love the idea of Sharp $3.9 for 1 season. A group of centers of Richards, Sharp and Roy? That would be a pretty good start.

You're using their cap salary, not their actual salary. Extremely long contracts with varied salaries like Brier, Richards, Timonen & Pronger really skew things.

Will the Sabres begin to have contracts similar to these?

In what reality would that ever happen? What's next? We're getting Stamkos?

IF, and that's a big if, they are looking to shake things up, that's the biggest salary they have without an NTC or the Hossa my contract runs till I'm 42 deal. They have about 700k per slot right now to fill 8 spots. After this past season, they may look to make a big change, and Sharp has 1 year left (low future value) and would free up almost $4M in cap space (high current value). but I still wouldn't put the odds higher than 10-20%. Maybe Gerbe + Butler/Weber/MAG + a first and a conditional?

First of all, Sharp is not on the same level as Stamkos. Stamkos is a 21 year old 40-50 goal scorer.

If a Patrick Sharp is that far from being a possibility for the Buffalo Sabres what you are truly saying is that the Sabres have no chance. If Regier can't land a player of the level of Sharp what players do you actually expect Regier to sign or trade for? It seems your expectations of Regier are actually lower than mine.

There's a big difference between getting a player of Sharp's ability and getting Sharp. Chicago may trade Sharp but not to shed salary. They do not need to shed salary.

Buffalo will find a partner looking to shed salary.

T.O is an interesting case. They have quite a bit of salary cap available and you know they have resources to spend to the cap. I heard Burke saying last week that theyre looking to add a top line center. He went on to say that the FA pool is weak this year and he anticipates he will be making some trades this offseason, likely around the draft. Now doesn't that sound familiar? Let's hope Toronto doesn't force us into overpaying or get a guy that was on our radar.

This is what scares me the most, Toronto at forward can offer ungodly money to win FA, and burke is a master trader. Detroit scares me on the blue line. They could easily get the top two available guys, and at a discount.

They also have the advantage of being Toronto. An Original Six team and one of the more storied franchises in the NHL.

Burke is "The Master Trader." Just don't tell that to some on this board. They will ignore that he is the only reason the Sedins are both wearing a Canucks jersey.

See! We can agree on things!

The burke problem is the reason that I'm NOT afraid of the islanders :o

Have they been any more "storied" during the Sabres' existence? Since that's longer than the lifetime of any current player (OK, a few freaks were 2 or 3 at the time), I wonder how much that matters. The Red Wings were a joke not too long ago, but are now the class of the League. The Islanders and Oilers were gods in the 80s, but are now two of the biggest jokes in the League. I'm sure that lots of players think "hmmm, haven't made the playoffs since the lockout, but boy are they storied!" They haven't exactly been getting a lot of big name FAs to come there for discount rates.

Didn't Gillis resign them both as they were entering free agency in 2009?
