Does this come from some evidence somewhere? Or just a single man's speculation?

He's, like, really old? Certainly this has to be Harry's last season, no?

RJ has been on the verge of retiring for years. This season saw a number of guest PBP guys and I think the end is probably coming. Dude is old.

I do think he'll stay on till he dies though.

I certainly hope so. I was a big Neale fan when he was paired with Cole on HNIC, loved listening to them. However I have never been a big Harry fan here. He's certainly improved with time on the job, but I still feel Rick is to intense for him and lends to a serious disconnect in commentator styles.

As far as RJ, it will be a sad day if and when it happens. And it' isn't just speculation, his 'hush hush' attitude towards the question tells me it's being considered.

I was kinda sad when Jim Lorentz retired, he was the beat color commentator there was. When I first started watching the sabres I couldn't tell the difference between the two, their voices sounded similar (when it was off-play)

As long as they don't replace him with Sylvester. He's just awful. If they had open auditions, I'd go do it.

Paul Hamilton sounds a lot like Rick Jeanerret when listening to him.

Paul sounded the best out of them all, I thought, but he doesn't sound like RJ. RJ has that nasally perfection going on, and the ability to rise up an octave without the tone falling apart. Few people have that as it is.

He'd be my # 1 replacement option. Good voice and all. Very deep too. lol

Not for me. He gets way too excited at less than exciting times while doing PBP. Sounds forced to me. Dont' ask me who should replace RJ when he's done, I haven't a clue. Anyone else will be a major buzz kill

I wouldnt mind seeing Barnaby as the color man, he seems pretty well spoken from what ive seen of him on ESPN. Not to mention, the banter between him and Ray might be entertaining. I also happened to see Brad May on the NHL channel doing some commentary on the games.

I was incredibly saddened when Lorentz suddenly retired--- his work with Rick (and Ted Darling before that) was so seamless that it was as if the pair(s) were able to read one another's minds. The flow of the game was never interrupted, but rather greatly enhanced by the broadcast crew. I, too, was excited that if we were going to lose Jim Lorentz at least he'd be replaced by Neale, whom I always enjoyed on HNiC. Rick and Harry have never gelled, though, and there is an undeniable tension between the two at times, which is distracting.

I recall Lorentz had mentioned he'd like to continue doing in-studio analysis for the Sabres, citing the lack of travel involved, but the Sabres (specifically Larry Quinn, IIRC) were quoted as saying that that was unlikely--- and obviously, it's never come to fruition.

JL is the classic case of not knowing what you had until it's gone. Couldn't agree more with your point Re: he and RJs seamless production of the action for their listeners.

As with the former administration's alumni SNAFU, one can only hope that JL will be brought back into the fold.

Agreed.

RJ keeps you in the game and is amazing.

Another guy, different sport though, who is just like RJ (of his era and sport), is Gus Johnson.

Would have loved to hear RJ call a Stanley Cup winner, just don't see him making quite that long... But boy would that have been a priceless audio clip... Paul Hamilton ain't in the same league

If we make it to the finals.

What are the chances (if RJ isnt our PBP guy) that they bring him back...

or take the stuff to the nursing home hahah!!

When we win the Cup and WHEN RJ makes that call, that will be played at my funeral (hopefully not for many many decades)

Hopefully the call is similar to this (1:41):

Rick is one of the greatest things that ever happened to the Sabres. What a guy and what a credit to hockey. No one calls a goal, a big hit or a fight like Rick. We're so lucky to have him. I know how much he hates travel....why can't we just get him for the playoffs and have someone else do the regular season? That said he seemed like he was having trouble seeing if goals went in this year.

This thread makes me more sad than getting eliminated from the playoffs. please stop. RJ is clearly immortal. They'll use the same preserving process that they used on Dick Clark. I think it had something to do with sealing him in tupperware when he wasn't on camera.

or have him do only home games and kevin Sylvester does away games.

Which is usually a sign that the guy is near the end of his career. I saw this a lot with Van Miller and I'm seeing it with some of the classic all-time great broadcasters (Al Michaels & Dick Enberg, specifically). Even so, RJ still has it. He may miss a few things here & there, but it doesn't seem like he's "losing it" as quickly as some others I've seen.

If Harry Neale's contract is up this year, I'd like to see them bring in Danny Gare. I thought he did very well subbing for Roby last year as a studio analyst.

the Sabres could be one good summer away from a Stanley Cup run in 2011-2012!

I just want to hear Rick call a Stanley Cup WIN! That would be the perfect time to retire (since it has to happen someday)....

When the Sabres win the cup, it has to be at home with Rick Jeanneret calling it, no exceptions. All hell will freeze over. Bedlam and pandeomium wouldn't begin to even scratch the surface of how the fans would react, inside and out of HSBC. Winning the cup would be like a little piece of heaven on earth.

IMO, I don't care if they win it home or away nor do I care who calls the game, I just want to see a Cup win in my lifetime.
