Game Discussion Thread: Sabres at Flyers

It irks me that some act as though having the better goalie falls outside the discussion of who has a better team. Championships aren't won by comparing rosters on paper.

EXACTLY! It's like a post-game interview of an NFL player: "Well, we were the better team out there, except that they had Peyton Manning and we had JaMarcus Russell at quarterback." Huh?!? Since when do you overlook the most important position in comparing what team is better?

Let's be real here: A lot of perceptions of this series are skewed by the first few months of the regular season when Philly was red hot and the Sabres were lousy. The Sabres have been the better team since New Years, and since the final quarter of the season. Period. The Flyers can make excuses about having a high seed locked up, not needing to have urgency, etc., but the numbers don't lie.

Since last month, these teams have played seven times, and the tally is now Sabres 5, Flyers 2. Three of the Sabre wins were by 4-3 or 5-3 scores, so it's just inaccurate to say that it's 100% Sabre goaltending. At what point will people stop saying the Flyers are clearly the better team?

Game thoughts:

3. People on this board who have been dogging the "5.4M Defensive Forward" are going to come to appreciate him now that he is lost for the foreseeable future.

9. I'm looking forward to hearing Doc call the game Sunday. I hope it's him. He calls every goal with the same enthusiasm.

10.Even the most unsure of us on this board now have to be dreaming of a deep playoff run. As fans we can afford to look ahead. I myself would like a crack at Washington and then have Boston-Pitt play. First things first, a 1-0 shutout of Philly on Easter would be the perfect series capper. Let's get it shorthanded just for fun. I dream, I dream..

As a frequent Pommer critic, I can assure you that he's a good player and that the Sabres will miss him. My point has simply been that he's ridiculously overpaid and not good enough to be a top-line forward for a cup contender. When you give a decent-to-good player that much cash, it impairs your ability to bring in a good-to-great player. Still, the option right now isn't Pommer or star player X -- it's Pommer or someone below him on the sabres' depth chart. In that situation, it would clearly be better to have Pommer.

I like Emrick's passion for the game and his knowledge, but I think he talks a bit too much.

Finally, let's not start counting chickens just yet. There is a very good chance that Philly wins game 6.

Bad choice of words.

I'll say, I know I'm not the only one to think it, so I'll say it. That play was potentially one way to get out from under the Pominville contract.

Wow-- I hope you are the only one to think this. His contract is guaranteed first off. Second, only if his career is over might there be an injury settlement that might save a little money. But to somehow see his career ending as a positive thing so we can "get out from under his K" is cold beyond words.

I am sure I am not. Guaranteed or not is irrelevant. It's all about cap space.

Bizarre comment (or at least I don't understand it).

How so? You don't think he'll heal by 2012?

In the meantime....there is the problem of replacing someone that has been a point per game for the last month.

A week after the season ends I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one to think that, but right now, in the midst of a hard fought, close series, to lose our best PKer and top scorer (before last night), I'm pretty sure you're the only one.

Not that it matters now....but.....on Philly's first goal, there was a gloved pass that wasn't called. It was an easy call. I have no idea how the Refs missed it. It was an easy clear but Giroux gloved it behind the net and vanRiemsyke picked it up.

Brutal missed call. Graniani had an easy clear and put his hand up right away.

I was right with you DeLuca. As soon as it happened, I figured achillies and out for 12 months. I think Pominville is a grade A human being and I would never want him hurt, but from an accounting standpoint....I said at the bar the Sabres may have just signed Richards.

It was probably worst case for Sabres hockey...he misses the playoffs but comes back in camp a tad more hesitant or slower.

It's war thinking. If there is one thing positive about some of the "negative" thinkers, it's that when there is pure chaos all around and shells are ringing in your ears...you can keep a clear head and be 3 steps forward. It probably helps that we are incapable of feeling emotion as well. :D

Yes I am sure sociopaths would make great GMs. Create great chemistry and team loyalty. It's a shame that Pegula seems like he gives a sh*t about the players, if he were a nihilist/sociopath the team's improvement would have been even greater. Caring about your players would never help any team improve. What crap this being a family concept is.

Meh. It's more like you guys are counting your own shells to save the taxpayers money after the war is over, instead of not caring and just blasting the s### out of the enemy and worrying about how to pay for it after you've won the war.

I hope you never have to rely on a doctor in the ER, or a firefighter rushing into a burning building about to collapse.....

You flatter yourself, as your analogy to heroes as opposed to some person spouting off opinions on a website is laughable. What's next, the cool calm and collected clubbing of racehorses for the insurance money? You can make hard decisions without being mean spirited. And hoping someone got hurt horribly(as opposed to just being hurt badly) to get cap space is just being a jerk, not clear headed and smart. Sorry--I expected better from you.

You do realize we are a page away from me being accused of wishing serious injury on Pominville.

It didn't even take a page.

You drew a pentagram in the dirt last night. Admit it.

Look at the post above you!!!!

I love reading message boards because it gives you such a great understanding of human psychology.

Now that is a very true statement.

I was going to sacrifice a virgin but I didn't know Crosschecking's real name.

He's busy protesting the NBC corporate offices anyway. He's trying to get them to change the name of Versus to Verses.

OK genius--what were you trying to say exactly? Sorry for being so slow.

You see Pominville drop everything like he was shot, and make a B-line to the lockerroom with the trainers running behind...while not putting any weight on his foot that was just fine 3 seconds previous. He didn't get hit...he didn't twist it.....first thought is a blade got him big time for him to react like that. The achillies is the first thing to come to mind when you see a guy just go limp, and knowing that part is exposed. If it is his achillies, he reacted so violently and urgently that it is very much in the realm of possibility he sliced it through. If he sliced it through...he is done for 12 months. If he is done for 12 months....he goes on IR and his cap space is freed up.

It was 15 seconds of deductive reasoning, along with the thought "I hope the SOB isn't bleeding to death back there", and "I hope he just overreacted because he was caught off guard."

And did you hope he was out for a year-- as opposed to 6 weeks, for instance-- so we might sign Brad Richards?(at least for a fleeting moment while you were busily deducing). Pretend this is a deposition.
