Stormin Norman Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 I'm trying not to feel this way, but does Laviolette have Ruff's number? I am thinking about this series, and the Carolina series in 2006. Yes, I know we were decimated with injuries on defense back then, but Laviolette took his team to the Cup Finals and won it, so Carolina's win over the Sabres wasn't just about Buffalo's injury problem. They obviously had a good team and a good coach. I thought about this when he switched goaltenders the other night. You may recall he did the same thing with the Hurricanes when he went to Cam Ward during their playoff series with Montreal. Ward was a rookie, and the rest is history. Laviolette has resurrected a few teams in his career. Maybe it's too early to answer this question, after all the series hasn't played out to the end yet. But it's a thought that goes through my mind right now... and I don't like it.

sabres1970 Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Philly does have a better team on paper, doesn't mean we can't win this series. I personally hate Laviolette because he aruges every call on the ice and I'm sure im not the only person thats notcied that.
bunomatic Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Philly has a better roster. Peter doesnt need to outcoach Ruff to win. Exactly! As long as the Flyers outwork us they win. Unless Miller steals one.
RayFinkle Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Laviolette is eating Ruff's lunch so far this series. He is clearly out coaching Ruff.....Philly just came in and are playing their game. Ruff came in, made multiple adjustments in his lineup, and is trying to play Philly's game ( and taking a ridiculous amount of penalties in the process). Laviolette has Ruff eating out of his hand.

SwampD Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 you think if you swapped rosters the same would hold true? Hardly. There is no doubt in my mind that Laviolette would have pulled Miller in game 2.
RayFinkle Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 you think if you swapped rosters the same would hold true? Hardly. The Sabres were just as good if not better than any team in the league the second half of the season. For this Philly series Ruff felt he needed to be more physical, insert kaleta, Grier, and a big increase in neidermayer's ice time. In the process, he dismantled the most consistent line we had (gerbe, goose, Mancari). Again, he is trying to play Philly's game and they are making him pay. He should be dictating how philly plays, not the other way around.

He should be dictating how philly plays, not the other way around. The big increase in Niedermayer's ice team came from two reasons: (1) Boyes was struggling to play at center, and (2) Niedermayer was playing really well. We are extremely thin at center, so his options there are quite limited. Goose and Gerbe have still been playing together much of time (when they weren't it had as much to do with some players getting heavy PK time or when Kaleta was injured), and those two really made that line. Don't forget that Gerbe-Goose-Kaleta was the line that won game 1. Also, most of those penalties and the goals against have come from stupid mental lapses or just dumb penalties (offensive zone cross checks or blatant holding the stick), not because they are play Philly's game.
Weave Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Exactly! As long as the Flyers work just as hard as us they win. Unless Miller steals one. Fixed. The Flyers have a deeper, more talented roster than we do. If they match our effort and Laviolette matches Lindy in coaching, the Flyers win the majority of the time. Laviolette doesn't need to outcoach Lindy and the Flyers don't need to outwork us. They have enough talent that simply matching what Lindy and the team does is good enough. I'll say this much, the playoffs against Carolina and this playoff series makes me start to think that Laviolette may be better and following hunches re: his goalies and when to pull them. But beyond sensing the right time to pull Bob, I don't believe Laviolette is outcoaching Lindy.
Claude_Verret Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 These discussions are asinine. Take away a few defensive breakdowns in game three by the Sabres and the Flyers boards have threads about how Ruff is outcoaching Labialette.
Stormin Norman Posted April 20, 2011 Author Report Posted April 20, 2011 These discussions are asinine. I've had that wrong for all these years.
Claude_Verret Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Oh, you're right. Coaching isn't part of the game. I've had that wrong for all these years. Where did I say that? Oh that's right I didn't. These game have been so close that they have turned as a result of breakdowns and lack of discipline on the ice, not on coaching moves. Take away those breakdowns in game three by the Sabres and this thread doesn't come up here, but instead it likely does on the Flyers board where it would be equally asinine.
apuszczalowski Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 But it has to be Lindys fault, or Millers fault! It can't be that the Flyers just have a better team, they only finished 2nd in the East for a reason  Buffalo had the best record since TP took over! You are exactly right, this series has been so close that take away a few mistakes and the series is turned in the opposite direction. Just because one team is leading a series, it doesn't mean that the other team is being outplayed/outcoached. There are times where a mistake or 2 can be the difference between winning and losing. They won a game by 1 goal and lost 2 more by 1 goal (yes i know game 3 was 4-2 but the last one was an empty netter) This has been one of the closer series out of all the playoffs, and the Flyers have played really well, while the Sabres i don't think have played their best yet in this series

X. Benedict Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Laviolette is eating Ruff's lunch so far this series. He is clearly out coaching Ruff. How so? What is the basis for this observation. Watching Laviolette coach....I don't think he makes that many moves...... Lavy's tendencies: Lavy usually lives and dies with the forecheck. If anything, he has pulled the forecheck back slightly in respect to Buffalo's transition game.(and probably worries about his goaltending) Even though Philly has done this, they haven't been that great through the neutral zone, even thought they are 20X more dominant at the center position. Other than that, he has done his best to match Timonen on Vanek.

Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Watching Laviolette coach....I don't think he makes that many moves...... Maybe that's the sign of a better coach??
X. Benedict Posted April 20, 2011 Report Posted April 20, 2011 Maybe that's the sign of a better coach?? Just a sign of being more one dimensional in my opinion....but I would say that Laviolette has brought the two fore-checkers and the Left wing lock everywhere he's gone. If it fits the talent, fine. But he's brought it even when I think it hasn't really fit that well. (2006 USA Olympic team comes to mind....) Laviolette's big move so far is not fore-checking the first 5 minutes of each game. I think Lavy would be a disaster coaching a team like the Bruins, or the Ducks.
