Captain?

With Vanek getting named the NHL first start of the week, has he earned enough credit to get the "C" on his chest?

For better or worse he's our big ticket, face of the franchise player. Frankly, I feel like he's earned it. It's not just his goal scoring but he's played well definsively and been playing some smart hockey. He's shown up the last couple of weeks when we've needed him the most and IMO the loss to the Bruins last yr was a result of the Vanek injury. I say he should get it.

I do not see them doing something like that right now after they went the season w/o.

Now should someone step up and show their metal tested through the fire of playoff hockey and said someone personally help them make it through a couple of rounds, then that's captain material rising to the top and worthy of said honor for next season.

An a side but similar note now that the owner has made it a personal mission to change the culture I think the players will actually consider it a worth while honor. Pure speculation but I am not sure that was the case under Quinn.

Lindy is too superstitious to change up right now. Players will keep their 'A's but other than that don't expect anything.

Personally I would like to see the Sabres wait until next year and give it to Vanek then, with Myers as an A...but hey, that's just my opinion.

Who is Bettman going to hand the Cup to then?

Give it to Gerbe. It'll make the cup look huge.

He11, if Gerbe keeps up the tenacity that he's shown I could see the C on his chest.

Speaking of #11, it took him 13 years before he wore the C. Something to think about when equating skill to leadership.

3 years from now I can see Gerbe or Weber being a captain. The size is just tough because he'd really have guys gunning for him with that letter.

I could see Gerbe with a C after a few seasons are under his belt. His approach and mindset are excellent and he never comes off like a meme in interviews. In fact, in the endless monotony of player interviews ("Yeh we played good. I scored goals yeh worked hard we're good blah blah blah...") it's refreshing to hear a Gerbe interview. He knows how to communicate better than most hockey players that's for certain. I'll continue with the Briere comparisons not only by stature but also in the way in which they both communicate well and convey their passion for the game and the team to the media.

I'm sure, if it gets to it, the team would choose at the moment. And my guess is that it would come down to Vanek or Miller. Vanek's attitude has changed - he smiles now, and gets pumped up at the end of games. It looks like the team responds to him differently. I dunno.

I would agree that if Gerbe continues down the path he's recently been traveling, then a "C" is in his future for sure. It was he, after all, who buried the piece of puck at center ice.

But this team's captain is clearly Vanek. I think Miller is probably socially too awkward to be anything but a de facto leader - he is a goalie after all.
