LastPommerFan Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Connolly led all forwards (besides McCormick maybe-- i never saw the final numbers, but they were neck and neck a couple weeks ago) in blocked shots during the regular season. He also leads forwards in blocked shots this series. That makes sense, he plays Center on the first PK Unit. He's supposed to do that. I'm refering to this specific effort to block a shot in this specific situation (somethings different! I have no stick!) combined with his general effort in all situations (not just shot blocking). But yeah, he finished 7 blocks behind Cody (very little PK time) and 3 ahead of Pommer (didn't get fully back on the PK until mid January).
LastPommerFan Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 I get the disappointment with the contract, the lack of physical play and the fact he seems to have lost his ability to create offence. But that really seems to have blinded some people about this guy. Going into tonight's game he led the forwards in blocked shots with 7. Who did he insult? Pat Kaleta? (1 BS), Gerbe? (1), Grier (3), McCormick (3)? Are you going to argue that TC has put in more effort than these 4 guys? Again, It's not the stats, his D-Stats have been great. He's been awsome on faceoffs too. He just decides to Randy Moss it a couple shifts a game.
dudacek Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Are you going to argue that TC has put in more effort than these 4 guys? Again, It's not the stats, his D-Stats have been great. He's been awsome on faceoffs too. He just decides to Randy Moss it a couple shifts a game. No, you smacked him for lack of effort blocking a shot, when the truth is, he's been better at it than anyone on the team. Why him and not the other guys? It seems like an example of how people get down on him more because of his history, than the way he's playing against the Flyers. His work ethic has been fine in the series and his general performance has been that of a solid veteran. I'm very frustrated with the fact he hasn't been able to create offence the way he seemed to back in '06 and even last year. But he's hardly been a liability, or an insult to his team.
LastPommerFan Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 ...But he's hardly been a liability, or an insult to his team. Please review the play, which resulted in a goal. There are other liabilities. Others that are more major. But letting down, even for a moment, is not the sign of a veteran. It is the sign of a player who is phoning it in. Kaleta, Gerbe, Neidermeier, Grier. These guys have been giving the mythical 110% every shift. They make mistakes, but NEVER for lack of effort. This one was purely a lack of that fire that lets a player give up his body to make a play. Randy Moss at his most annoying prime had the numbers. The Touchdowns were there, but he let his team down because he failed to keep the effort up every series. I see a lot of that in connolly. However, I now realize that the third time defending this point has caused me to look a little cold, so again I will reiterate, Richards is an A$$ Clown. I'd rather have Tim than Luke Adam or Paul Byron.
spndnchz Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Loser or not, i dont know, and frankly, don't care about your opinion on the guy, but, he has played very well in this series. He hasn't put up points on the scoreboard, which can and should be criticized, but, he has done tons of small things to help the team win, including elite play on the PK, faceoff and on the boards. He will be missed on the ice. +1 That makes sense, he plays Center on the first PK Unit. I know the play ur talking about. I thought Connolly gave it everything. I thought he was going to take one in the chops. You can't lay down and block in that situation. The guy would go right around you. You stay on your feet, get low, on one knee, just like he did, so you can move. It was Myers on the play that screened Miller.
LGR4GM Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Derek has to play tomorrow. 50% or better and hes in. TC as much as I dislike him was a huge loss yesterday and the fact richards wasnt tossed for a deliberate hit to the head I will never know but Roy now MUST imo return. If he is cleared for contact, I say PLAY HIM.
LGR4GM Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 http://blogs.buffalonews.com/sabres/2011/04/sabres-want-richards-suspended-roy-returning-for-game-7.html Derek Roy's return is currently 34 hours away... F*^K you mike richards, I hope Roy destroys you.
Robviously Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Paul Hamilton makes it sound like Roy does everything at practice that all the other players do. I keep thinking this means that he'll be back for the first game we play after the Flyers win a third game this series. (Hopefully they won't, but that's just my guess.) Damn, SNR, you were totally right!
X. Benedict Posted April 25, 2011 Report Posted April 25, 2011 Damn, SNR, you were totally right! Why did it take so long for someone to realize you were totally right?
Bmwolf21 Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison? Do you like movies about gladiators?
Punch Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 I'm not at all a fan of Ecklund, but the Sabres' blogger on Hockeybuzz, GARTH, often reveals some interesting details from behind the scenes that I don't see reported elsewhere--- like this bit regarding Roy in practice: "Roy was battle-tested this morning by assistant coach James Patrick. Roys was rubbed, scraped, and bumped along the wall inside HSBC Arena to test his surgically repaired quadriceps. By all indications, Roy passed his tests with flying colours. He was also hacked and banged on by Mile Weber and Cody McCormick. Roy is none the worse for wear. Said Weber: " I gave it to him pretty good and he battled with me. Thats a good sign". Roy played between Stafford and Ennis in practice." http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/GARTH/RICHARDS-EXCITED-TO-PLAY-IN-GAME-7/6/35469

RazielSabre Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 Connelly out, a possibly rusty Roy in. Sounds like a huge upgrade to me. Im finally officially joining the Connelly haters, his disappeared again from what I can tell.

Dude Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 Hard to blame Connolly for that PP goal. No stick was a huge break for the Cryers and hopefully won't be repeated again.
Calvin Posted April 26, 2011 Report Posted April 26, 2011 i don't remember how effective Roy was on the PK, but we're missing two of our best penalty killers in Pommers and TC

I was laughing at an almost 50yo James Patrick being the gatekeeper of physical play standards. Maybe we can have Gord Donnelly come in and race Sekera up the ice with the puck to make sure he's good to go as well.
