JoDo Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 What's a kneel-down in football? Or a player running towards the endzone and then purposefully going down at the one to run clock, as we've seen several instances of in the past two NFL seasons? Both are examples of "not competing" in order to get the result you desire. This is much ado about nothing. If the Rangers are upset about that, perhaps they shouldn't have laid an egg at home against Atlanta earlier in the week. Thank you. My thoughts exactly. Fining the teams is a ludicrous idea.
JoDo Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 I need to go back to the DVR to get the exact time, but I'm pretty sure that, with something in the 90 seconds to go or less range during a stoppage in play, Razor didn't realize his mike was on and yelled something like "we just made the playoffs! F----ing way to go boys!" Did anyone else hear it? Yes I did.
Stoner Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 Personally, no way would I want to give up possession in that situation. Only 10 seconds left. A dribbling puck deep into the zone ends it for sure. What was Philly going to do with the puck anyway? Nothing. But when he turned back, he could have fallen. A Flyer was checking him. Would have been a one on one from there. He ended up reversing it up the wall to Myers. Just seemed like a trickier play than should have been necessary.

Needs the playoff dough, I guess.

Stoner Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 You have a good point. But I wouldn't want to give up possession and give up a shot from anywhere. Not even a long one. True. And the Flyers win it on a long bouncer! Shiver me timbers. As usual, I nod to X. and skulk off into the jingleweed.

X. Benedict Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 And the Flyers win it on a long bouncer! They would have had to post guards to keep people from jumping off the Grand Island bridge.
LGR4GM Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 They would have had to post guards to keep people from jumping off the Grand Island bridge. Niagara falls would need extra security because thats where i would go... i bet people would not even use barrels. Shredd and Reagen would have the best police blotter segment ever... thank god it didnt happen
JoDo Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 This is correct and it was with a lot more then 90 seconds left. I didn't hear what Free said, but I definitely heard this. There was something that was said with about 8 min left. I'll have to go back to the dvr to check. In the last miniute I heard Rayzor say "they're doing us a favor!"
nobody Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 The only team sport I can think of that has some sort of compete rule is indoor football. Where you are not allowed to run a play that isn't moving forward from the line of scrimmage. Sure - basketball you do have to get past half court but then you can just stand around.
sabre snipe Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 If somebody happens to find the part of the game when Ray said that, could they please make in effort to post it?? I would LOVE to hear that, it's hilarious
rickshaw Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 The Sabres had control of the puck and the Flyers lined up at center. Why would Myers try to advance out and risk the turnover? The Flyers really were the ones who dictated how that last 40 seconds played out. Either way we're in and gonna' cause some trouble.
biodork Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 Not to be a dick, but that is a sad statement on the NHL. We were in this position about ten years ago in a end-of-season game against Washington. We tied at the end if regulation to earn the playoff berth. Just something wrong about it. As a disclaimer, I don't follow football closely and don't know all the rules. But, after others made the point about the NFL, I was reminded of this year's Super Bowl. Am I crazy for thinking it was kind of unsportsmanlike for Green Bay to kneel down and end it with 0:45 still on the clock (around the 2 minute mark, below)? Seems like they should have played it out since 45 seconds is an eternity in football time and the Steelers were within 6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0prLwonyNs
LGR4GM Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 heres what the nhl should do. If you win in regulation you get 2 pts, if you win in ot you get 2 points, if you win a shootout you get 1 point, if you lose you get nothing, 0 , zilch, nada.... see problem solved and then the shootout wouldnt be as big of a deal.
Kristian Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 My point was that in all of professional sports, it is the only sport that makes not competing the right thing to do. On second thought maybe football (soccer) could generate this moment/decision. Happens all the time in every world or european cup, in the final stage of the preliminary rounds where you can usually see two teams facing each other, and both only needing one point to progress to the knockout stages.
Meathead Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 if youre gonna have ot and the shootout, which they should, then the 3-2-1 system is MUCH better. solves every problem in the book and creates none
rickshaw Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 if youre gonna have ot and the shootout, which they should, then the 3-2-1 system is MUCH better. solves every problem in the book and creates none OH it creates a very big problem with the NHL. You see, the teams that are good and win in regulation will get a big lead over others and therefore the NHL won't have all those super close races for the playoffs. It keeps all teams in it a lot longer by keeping the current point system. I think it sucks, but take a look at the English Premier League soccer table. The point spread is so great from top to bottom it's sick. The NHL can't spin parody if they go to 3 point games for all games.

I am going to apologize now for being the English police, but I've seen this a bunch of times and it's making me crazy... the word is parity, NOT parody. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/parity http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/parody Though I will give you that, at times, the NHL is a parody of the other major sports leagues.
