First Round opponent

The most likely first round opponent at this point is Philly.

Buffalo will end up in 7th unless they can gain a point on the Habs Saturday night, in which case they would finish 6th. Whoever finishes 6th will very likely play Boston.

The Bs will be the 3 seed, UNLESS:

1. 2 BOS wins AND a PIT loss AND a PHI loss, OR

2. BOS win and BOS OT/SO loss AND PIT regulation loss AND PHI regulation loss

The PHI/PIT division winner will very likely be the 2 seed. PHI will be the 2 seed unless PIT gains a point on PHI, in which case PIT would be the 2 seed.

Based on these scenarios I'd put a rough estimate of the odds per opponent of 50% PHI, 30% BOS, and 20% PIT.

I'd like us to play Philly. I don't think we match up well with Boston and I don't want the Sabres to be thrown into the lovefest of Crosby.

I'm thinking Boston because the Sabres have won a couple in a row against them, but I'd take Philly over the Pens.

And I thought all of these playoff scenarios/random numbers and situations would go away after the Sabres were in! Give my mind a break here, please. Haha

I still hope for Boston. This looks just like last year, with the differens that the teams switched places. Last year we were third and they came strong at the end of season (I think). They took control and won the series. Now we finish really strong and Boston is up there. Don't know if we have a better chance against Bruins than Philly but this year I would love to send Bruins out.

I say bring on anyone.

I like that attitude. I don't want to see Pittsburgh in the first round, though. Fleury's curious mastery of Sabre shooting (he's really not that good, but damn, he has Buffalo's number) combined with the lovefest from the officials spells disaster.

Gimme Philly or DC (that one's not gonna happen) in a seven game series, though.

Boston--Thomas worries me. I really don't want the Sabres to face him early.

According to the Sports Club Stats site, here are the seed probabilities heading into Saturday's games:

Philly: 72/6/22 (seed #2/3/4)

Pittsburgh: 21/1/78 (seed #2/3/4)

Boston: 7/93 (seed #2/3)

Montreal: 70/30 (seed #6/7)

Buffalo: 30/70 (seed #6/7)

So, if we presume the probabilities hold true, the Sabres and Flyers will meet in the 1st round.

Thanks. That matches up with what I was thinking. The interesting thing is that Boston will know tomorrow afternoon who is 6/7, so they could have the opportunity to decide whether to push for 2 or stay at 3 by giving some good players rest.
