3 AHL ROY's in a row for darcy & co.

oh, and there was that calder last year as well.

color (colour) me impressed.

So maybe video scouting might not be as horrible a concept as it sounded.

Prior to video scouting, it seemed the Sabres hit fairly well on later round picks but their early picks were nothing to write home about. Post video scouting, they seem to hit fairly well on early picks. Maybe w/ the new improved scouting budget they can start to hit on both.

You think Adam makes the Sabres next year? I like what I saw from him this season, plus the roster needs centers badly, plus the previous two AHL ROY's - Gerbe and Ennis - have both played major roles in the recent playoff push.

This is an interesting question. He showed some nice flashes in his limited stints here. I'd guess that he'll be given a real shot, but he'll need to earn it. LR would rather keep playing guys like Hecht and Boyes at center than give it to a rookie who hasn't earned it.

Separately, although it's already been threaded, it's worth noting here that in addition to Adam's award, Gragnani won the AHL defenseman of the year award.

DR's definitely shown that he can deliver the goods on the scouting/development front. Now that the shackles have been removed, let's see if he can win at the $100 tables.

Adam plays a very nice game in the offensive zone, and protects the puck well and gets the puck to net. He's got some nice hands.

The only problem with his call-up time was he would get lost on backchecking assignments. He would get back fine, he was just never was sure which guy to take.

I don't expect he'll be on the opening roster (my hopeful assumption that the Center position is addressed), but I suspect he'll see a lot of time in Blue and Gold next year. 19 minutes a night in the AHL will suit him better than 8 minutes a night at HSBC.

This book: http://www.amazon.com/Art-Scouting-Hockey-Experts-Really/dp/0470681500/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302198776&sr=8-1 , which anyone can read cover-to-cover in a few hours, has me convinced more than ever that video scouting is a bad idea, the three ROYs in Portland notwithstanding. Also, I would imagine that R1 and R2 guys like Ennis and Adam are the product of live scouting. Maybe not so for Gerbe.

That's right, I forgot about Gragnani. Next season, I could see as many as 4 Portland guys making the Sabres roster full-time (Enroth, Adam, Gragnani, Mancari). I'd take Enroth over Lalime, Adam over Niedermayer, Gragnani over Morrisson, and Mancari over Grier.

Good work, Darcy. Now get this team a top center!

Adam completes the rookie of the year hat trick

Published on: 7th April, 2011 by Chris Roy

For the third straight year, a member of the Portland Pirates was named AHL’s top rookie as forward Luke Adam was awarded the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award for the AHL’s outstanding rookie player.

If Mancari is on the opening day roster next year than the Pegula regime has failed miserably over the summer.

Congrats to Luke Adam, glad to see another Sabre win the award. I don't get to see Portland play, but I thought the kid looked terrible in his call ups w/ the Sabres. Hopefully he's not another AHL-pro/NHL-scrub like Mancari.

Why is that league handing out all their awards before the season is even over?

My first thought was to agree with you. On the other hand, to me it makes more sense to do it now then to do it after the playoffs when the playoff results have nothing to do with them either.

I agree Mancari is not the answer. Not even as a replacement for Grier and Neidermayer assuming neither of them is on the roster next season.

Why not wait until the day or two between the regular season and the playoffs? What happens if Rhett Rakhshani blows up and scores 20 goals in the next 3 games?

What difference should it make?

Not necessarily. It's quite possible that they are planning to take a shot at an elite player, either in trade or via FA. If they bring in a $7MM guy and give stafford a big contract, they're going to need a number of cheap 3rd and 4th liners.

Also, I kinda like what I've seen out of mancari during this stint. He's got a nice shot with a quick release, good chemistry with gerbe and Gaustad, and he has both size and a bit of an edge.

I agree he hs actually been pretty good. Look at his work last game grinding out the last few seconds against the wall.

Not so in my mind. If the Sabres sign, say, a top center and need to squeeze under the cap, I can think of worse options than a Mancari on the roster at close to league minimum.

Don't you read Bucky Gleason's chats in the Buffalo News? Darcy loves his players too much. He needs to be replaced.
