Going to be traveling back to Buffalo from downstate NY Friday night. Coming up 86 to 390 to 20A etc. Probably be somewhere between Binghamton and Elmira at gametime. Anybody know if I can pick up the game by that point or another station down that way that will carry the game? Thanks

Don't know if it would carry that far, but WCMF 96.5 out of Ra-cha-cha will have the game on. (It'll carry a heck of a lot farther than WGR will. I remember times in the '90's when I couldn't pick up the game while driving through Alden. )

WGR (and all AM) actually can transmit further, but are required at sundown to drop their transmission by quite a bit by the FCC. You probably won't hit it in Rochester, but yeah, use 96.5.

Yes, they can transmit further DURING the day (the signal reaches at least to Cayuga Lake when it's powered up) which doesn't help somebody looking for the game one ###### iota as the signal is barely detectable in parts of Erie County (much less Broome County) after dark.

Not sure if you have the capability, but I stream it via the Android app when I get out of work late. I just put the phone down, crank it up all the way, and it's like being back home.

Terry talked about listening to Sabres game on GR from an overpass north of Pittsburgh. WGR's signal is strong into at least extreme northern PA.

WGR turning down the power probably started after those "listening from the overpass" days. I remember listening to WGR from our cottage on Chautauqua Lake as a kid. Today, WGR loses its steam after dark at the edge of Erie County. I don't live in Erie County anymore. When I am listening to a game in my car I lose the signal right about Pembroke on the I-90.

Not sure when they started turning down the signal. I first noticed it 6-7 years ago.

# Buffalo - WGR 550-AM

# Batavia - WBTA 1490-AM

# Jamestown - WKSN 1340-AM

# Olean - WMXO - 101.5 FM

# Dunkirk - WDOE 1410 AM

# Rochester - WCMF 96.5 FM | Sports Radio 950 AM

Those are the radio affiliates on sabres.com, so i doubt they have any in the area you're in. But you could try either Rochester station and hope for the best.

Thanks everyone. I'll try 96.5, but I don't remember picking up much of anything coming up through there. The phone thing is a good idea though. I wonder if the "Listen Live" thing will work from a Blackberry?

If you have a blackberry, you got to download "flycast", which u can find by going to wgr550.com... and that will work perfectly. I've done it in the past (i have a storm).

Also, you can go to a store and buy a plug-in for your phone, so when the game starts, you hook it up and the play-by-play will come in through your speakers. It's a pretty cheap cord, like $8 i think.

ps. Flycast is a number of stations in an app. When its downloaded, you open the app up, then find Buffalo, then click on WGR 550. (Not sure how technology savvy you are)

Yeah, I was streaming flycast on my phone through my car stereo during much of my 46 hour round trip to S. Florida. The old lady didnt appreciate too much. :-)

It's a good thing WGR gets to Olean in the AM. Pegula has told the story several times, the latest at today's Power Play Luncheon, about how he became interested in the Sabres in the fall of 1975. He had moved to Olean and had WGR on his alarm clock radio. He woke up to it. And morning man Stan Roberts used to play "We're gonna win that Cup" a lot. Pegula was hooked.

I can remember getting GR55 all the way in Northern NJ on cloudy days. Not always, but surprisingly more than one would believe possible. Gotta love that bouncing AM.. I could sometimes get the Bills broadcast back before Sunday ticket was available.
