Sabres crest: early 80s tweak?

I was looking up some images of Mike Ramsey (my fave Sabre since youth) and noticed the crest was slightly different from about 1979-1985 or so. Does anyone remember this? If you notice, the logo in the top left corner of the first card is more familiar, but the way the buffalo's backlegs on the crest sort of trail off abstractly is... odd.

I put the attached image together in 2008 when there was so much, ahem, discussion about the logo ... shows that the logo was hardly ever EXACTLY the same for two years in a row back in the early days ... even once they seemed to settle on the same Buffalo in the late '80s (which was NOT the same as the original), the little hash marks above and below it were moving all over the place.

Awesome post and graphic. Thanks. +1

BTP, that's some great work. Would have been the perfect retort to LQ saying the old logo was so iconic and untouchable it couldn't be tweaked when they were rolling out the slug.

Wonder if there are any slight differences between the post lockout versions?

Good work! For the most part the tweaks are difficult to pinpoint--- very interesting to see them all together, where the minor changes are pretty evident.

But that early 80s iteration is such a mutant by comparison--- it looks like a kid tried to draw the logo for a homemade sign to take to a game and just didn't get it quite right.

One minor point of clarification: the changes in the logo were only for the crest on the sweater. It wasn't a real easy one to cut out of cloth apparently.

The logo at center ice and in publications was the same through the years. (Though depending upon where it was used it might or might not have the red eye.)

I've learned more over the last few months about Sabres jerseys and logo designs than I ever wanted to haha that graphic is nice though. Handy. Saving for sure.

The older posters here can attest that uniform design and commercialization is a fairly recent development. Uniforms were routinely resewed, reused and pieced together and it wasn't unusual for a team to be wearing different shades of uniforms during a single season. He'll, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that some teams had players wearing different versions of sweaters at the same time.

I seem to vaguely remember a game at the Aud in the very early 80's where half the Whalers were wearing Cooperalls and half weren't, and half had unis with different piping on the sweaters than the other half.

During one of the lulls someone would inevitably shout : "They are a disgrace!" or "We are passing the hat for uniforms!"

I think half of their equipment didn't arrive.

Didn't someone's equipment truck burn down last year and they had to scrounge for jerseys and mark them up with patches and whatnot? Maybe at the college level?

I think it was the Minnesota Wild.

Yeah, the Wild jerseys do look a little 'college'. :)

(Like a Sabres fan 2006-10 can talk.)

Wow, that is pretty cool! I never realized the logo changed as much as it did.
