Long term future vs. this years playoffs

I find it interesting to think about the direction of this team under T-Pegs. Saying that, do you think the Sabres would be better served long term by NOT making the playoffs this year as opposed to making it? I always want to make the playoffs, but I feel if we make it, we might make only a few "tweaks" to the lineup instead of going out and loading up as T-Pegs indicated. If we were in 3rd place or so, I'd feel all we needed was a tweaking, but since we're clawing for our playoff lives, we have plenty of uprgrading still to do in all aspects of the team to include depth.

I welcome your thoughts/discussion on the matter.

If minor tweaking vs. bigger moves were dependant on whether the team made the playoffs then I would vote for missing the playoffs and get the bigger move. BUT.... I don't think the moves we make this offseason are terribly dependant on whether they get into the playoffs. At least I hope not. I expect the moves that get made would be pretty similar regardless of whether we made the playoffs.

So, given that, might as well play in the middle of April, right?

I don't see where they finish from this point affecting how the offseason is handled. With the possible exception of a player or 2 that may be on the bubble can cement their status (in OR out) with a very memorable performance.

Might as well be in. It won't hurt getting Myers, Ennis, Gerbe, Weber, etc. some playoff experience.

I agree that making the playoffs will be beneficial (esp for the younger guys), and I can see how missing the playoffs virtually assures us of cutting some fat from the team and going after some top tier players. I still think that will happen, but I feel there will be more pressure to add more talent after a non-playoff year.

If it were me running the show, I'm not blind to who got us here and who needs to go... playoffs or not, this team needs some tinkering.

In regards to that in particular I think tpegs made it quite clear that winning the cup not making the playoffs was going to be any teams measure of success. So we should make the playoffs and see what happens then in the summer I think the plan will be similar unless we of course win the cup. Black and Regier have indicated that there is actually a plan going forward and I dont think it matters one bit if we make or dont make the playoffs. I vote make it just for the experience alone.

We are talking about a drop in the draft of 10 spots if we are lucky. 14-24 - what's the difference. We don't even have a second round pick. Might as well win the whole damn thing.

I don't think TPegs will be fooled by a couple weeks of effort vs. years of apathy. The playoffs tend to expose the weak of body and soul.

Yes, I did state my position... last time I checked, this was a "discussion" board. That's kind of where I was going with this.... ;)

I wasn't referring to the draft at all. I'm only thinking about the Sabres keeping together what we have (because we made the playoffs) vs a more thorough overhaul for not making the playoffs.

Definitely make the playoffs. If they missed the playoffs they would finish in 9th or 10th place. A mid-to-late round pick in a weak draft class. Absolutely no good comes from missing the playoffs this year.

Here's a thought though: We make playoffs and Connolly has a huge post season. Would everyone still want him gone?

I was trying to point out that making the playoffs is better than not. I guess I didn't do a good enough job.

Then read my second paragraph.

Unless he puts up numbers like Danny Briere did last year, definitely yes. And even if he does he still needs to take a pay cut.
