thesportsbuff Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 I just spent five minutes trying to figure out where Boyes' stick caught the Cap. Then I went to the Gaustad call and decided to call it a night. It's so hard to tell. I might have to stand corrected. At first glance on Boyes high stick, I thought he hit the puck out of the air and the puck hit the Caps player up high -- all so quickly that it looked like a high stick. But there was really no complaint from Boyes and the replay was fairly conclusive. Gaustad high stick looked high to me but I haven't seen the replay since.

It seems like Boyes caught the Cap with his blade, which was pointed up. Still, McCreary was in no position to call it. The Cap player's reaction sold the call. I don't think Gaustad's stick was high. Son of a bitch. But for the McCreary haters, the trailing ref called it. Anyone catch the Caps fans running down and holding up a sign for Bill right before a faceoff? He turned around, saw it, skated over and tapped the glass. There's something extremely unsavory about that. No way am I saying McCreary was influenced by anything in a direct way, but they're human. Maybe deep, deep down these moments can have some impact.

Dude....you're killing me! McCreary is old school and I respect the hell out of him. The refs and players have a running banter all game, especially leaders and guys with personalities like OV. Because the Sabres are a bunch of monotone fellas with the personality of a fat 13 year old Catholic School girl, you probably don't see that kind of comradery much. They let a 2 hander which almost broke Semin's wrist go, a minute earlier.
Wyldnwoody44 Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 I have to agree that timmy had a good game for the most part, but that first goal was a result of him giving the puck away and the ot goal started when he fumbled clearing the puck, then followes by bad luck....im not blamin this game on him, our d decided to play half a game and that's the reason we lost, but I don't wanna give him too much praise....and I own a connolly jersey so im not a regular hater of him. Just figured id put it out there, this is not a bash, just simple observation

The Caps were clearly greasing the palms/skids/wheels. I don't remember Bill Polian presenting Jerry Markbreit with a canned ham before his last game. I'm not talking about the banter. Seems like a Montreal native ref was honored before a Habs game in Montreal. It just looks bad.

You know what looks bad.....Bruce Hood getting honored in Buffalo, then getting a job on their broadcast team. I know you're old enough to remember that one!

But, I think the Sabres really, by now, ought to be used to the idea that if they do something to cause a dumb penalty the refs are going to call it on them. Goose could have used his hand going for that puck, not his stick. That was just bone-headed stupid - especially after all that work to take the lead near the end.
JJFIVEOH Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Can somebody tell me how Chris Butler still has a job?

It's not everyday that a fan comes to the rink with a sign for the ref. Most of the people in the building don't even know the refs names. I usually don't even know the refs names tbh, unless I remember from RJ telling me at opening faceoff. For all we know it could have been a Sabres fan, a family member, friend, who knows? I see how it doesn't look professional maybe but I don't really have a problem with it at all. Even if it was just a random habs fan, so what? It was the dudes last regular season game, if the fan gave him some acknowledgement and he repaid it, thats awesome.
Punch Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Show some respect for a future Hall-of-Famer, who as I best as I can recall, has never screwed the Sabres like some other officials. Well, there was that ONE TIME ;)

The way its supposed to work in a perfect world is you're not even supposed to notice the ref. He's merely window dressing for the show he's not the show. So ya its o.k. if we don't even know the refs names. The ref should be honoured for the years of service immediately after the final buzzer not before the game. Just my opinion.
LGR4GM Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 So if the sabres had been better defensively and had been winning or had won we would not be having a ref discussion. Today at 5:00 we can determine our fate. Good Night and Good Luck
LaLaLaFontaine Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 I can't remeber when i saw a game with so many weak goals. Without Neuwirth we would have lost in regulation. Oh man i hope Miller is back tonight. Enroth is not the starter goalie i want to have in the finals for the playoff run.(not this year)

In the beginning of the game, I think it was RICK who said that McCREARY requested that Washington be the spot of his last game. I find that a little weird.
Dave Dryden Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 In the beginning of the game, I think it was RICK who said that McCREARY requested that Washington be the spot of his last game. I find that a little weird. That is exactly right. I was at the game, and he officiated his first game in DC in 1984, and wanted his last game to be there too--so he picked this. The ceremony before the game was bizarre, and all the Caps fans were delighted about the whole thing, and the impact it might have on the game. They may have given him a new car too--just kidding. Not saying it impacted anything, but it it did have an appearance of unfairness, with McCreary beaming with his wife and daughter, and the tractor-pull atmosphere crowd going beserk over the ref. My wife even saw McCreary's wife mouth "Go Caps" during the ceremony to further amp up the crowd.
wjag Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 I still think of the two games this weekend, this is the better shot at winning. Washington has been giving up third period goals and leads only to come back and win in the OT/SO. They are banged up defensively. Both teams are rested (as much as you can be this time of year). If the Sabres win tonight a little pressure is lifted off tomorrow's game. I don't think Carolina will have trouble with Isles like the Sabres did. Carolina has won three so far against the Isles. I'll be doing headstands if I'm wrong. As to tomorrow's game, I really think Carolina has the cards stacked in their favor. It will take an herculean effort by the defense to keep the Staal line in check. All we can hope for is that the Isles put a serious forecheck on the Canes and send them into tomorrow's game banged-up and bruised. Buffalo can't afford another player lost to injury.. Think I nailed it.
Dave Dryden Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Think I nailed it. Ah, the key part is yet to come.
SwampD Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 I'm still trying to figure out what Weber was doing on that fourth goal. oof. I'm also trying to figure out how on a two on one, Timmy not only didn't make the pass but didn't even get a shot off. oof. Other than that, it was a pretty entertaining game. Fluky goals all around. Glad we got a point.

The sabres suck +1. Lindi Ruff is the worst coach in sabres history +1. Ryan Miller should be traded +1. Ryan Miller shouldnt be traded you all suck for suggesting it +1. I have the cat aids +1. Tpegs didnt already trade for crosby, stamkos, and paris hilton, he clearly sucks and we are screwed +1. PA I am not blaming you but I thought the +1 thing was for really funny or really good thought out posts. The LSNP (League of Super Negative Posters) is strong and we all must fight them.
