Snowmobiler97 Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 I'm not sure what all the "Connolly should go blah blah" is. He is a precise playmaker and very hard and accurate shooter. Sure, maybe a little overpaid and rated, but there isn't anything anybody can do about it now so why doesn't everybody just root for him and hope he keeps getting better?
spndnchz Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 I hope he's great this season. And we don't re-sign him for next. Out.
bills_fan_in_raleigh Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 actually as a 3rd line center I might consider resigning but need a much better deal
Snowmobiler97 Posted March 31, 2011 Author Report Posted March 31, 2011 Agreed. We wouldn't of won last nights game (in reg.) without him or tied that boston game a couple weeks in which we won in OT. They should resign him, but unless he is (if they make it) a playoff warrior and breaks out then they have to get a better deal. And get rid of laLAME off their Salary .

I guess his precise playmaking and hard & accurate shot leading to 37 points in 63 points is good for you? He's a -10 this season, his turnovers lead to odd man rushes every game, and he's been described as anything but a leader. This is the guy you want back?

Maybe if you've been watching the last couple of years you might know. Having said that, he has been playing much better for a little while now.
Rico7 Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 Sorry, but i'm not convinced. He's put together a modest stretch of games lately, but he's proven in his career that he can't do it over the long haul. I hope like heck he has a great finish to the seaon helping us make the playoffs, but no way I want him around next year.
nfreeman Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 It's easy to say "I'll take him back next year at a one-year, $2MM contract," but he's not going to sign for that. Someone will give him a 3-year deal. If the Sabres want to keep him, it will cost at least $3MM x 2 years. Does anyone here want him for that much?
Weave Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 I don't want him back next season at any price. I want an upgrade in our #1 C, Roy as our #2 C, and that would leave the #3 C slot for Connolly. And I don't want him there. I want to see a center with good defensive abilities who won't turn the puck over at the blue line twice or three times a game on my #3 line. And that sure doesn't describe Connolly. He's #2 center talent. He'd probably work out nicely on a team like Florida or Minny or Columbus where they lack scoring depth and need the help on their 2nd line. We won't need that help next season (I hope). Once we get our #1 C in here Roy will fill our #2 C role nicely.

Having said that, he has been playing much better for a little while now. I've been watching all of the games for years and, you do realize we are watching the SABRES not the CAPS or PIT (who all have mainly all stars). Sure connolly has some bad streches but i'm talking for a lower contract deal and why don't we all support him in the playoffs, as i've said before, no sense crying and complaining now, he's here now so let's support LET"S GO BUFFALO!

wonderbread Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 Snomobile must be a bartender in Buffalo. At Mothers.
wjag Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 Connolly is playing like he wants to stay. If you don't see it, you're not paying attention. Someone has got to say it, "He ain't going nowhere"
itbeatswalking Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 Connolly is masterful with the puck one shift, then coughs it up too easily the next. I don't want to see him go either, Snow, but it's probably more for nostalgic reasons. Let the suits adjust the line-up for next season as they see fit and, come what may, we WILL be there rooting for our Sabres.
OverPowerYou Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 We should defintely keep Connolly next year. That's if he takes a 4 million dolllar pay cut
beerme1 Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 I'm talking about the last couple months, everybody had a bad start this season (miller, myers etc) I'm just saying let's watch him in playoffs and then decide. Playoffs, like last year when Mr. Dependable was at his peak?
Wraith Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 Playoffs, like last year when Mr. Dependable was at his peak? The guy has three playoff runs with the Sabres on his resume. During one of them, he was amazing and arguably the Sabres best player. Another he was very good in, especially considering he played two regular season games that year. The third he sucked in, along with about 90% of his teammates (everyone besides Vanek, maybe?). How he does in this playoffs this year will be very interesting and will probably go a long way towards determining his future with the Sabres. As far as the future goes, the name of the game in the NHL these days is scoring depth and there's no doubt that a third line of Connolly-Hecht-Pominville (as opposed to a first line) means you have amazing depth. Of course the price has to be right and that means both Roy and another top 6 center need to also be on the roster. This all depends on how much money Connolly is willing to accept (and what other offers he gets). It's not outside the realm of possibility though, especially since it appears as if Connolly really wants to be here.

I support every player wearing the Blue and Gold and want them all to do well. I do realize I'm watching the Sabres and not Caps or Pit.Thanks for pointing that out. Not sure the point of your posts. We all want Connolly to do well but we have been disappointed too many times to want him re-signed.

Another he was very good in, especially considering he played two regular season games that year. The third he sucked in, along with about 90% of his teammates (everyone besides Vanek, maybe?). The other way to look at it is, he has 10 points and 0 goals in his last 22 playoff games. That is equivalent to 1/4 of a season with no goals and only 10 points. I agree that Connolly's performance in this years' playoffs will be interesting to watch. He's played better of late. If that carries over in the playoffs I might have a change of heart re: Connolly on a 3rd line next season. No way I want him considered as a top 2 line center though.
inkman Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 Why does eveyone keep suggesting Connolly will take thus big pay cut? Just because you want it to happen doesn't mean it will. Quite honestly, I woudnt want him back, at any price. Don't worry fanbois, your head fanboi TPegs will see to it Timmy is back probably with a raise and a golden hockey stick.
LabattBlue Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 Connolly needs to go regardless of salary, even if the Sabres win the Cup and he wins the Conn Smythe trophy.
Wraith Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 The other way to look at it is, he has 10 points and 0 goals in his last 22 playoff games. That is equivalent to 1/4 of a season with no goals and only 10 points. You're right, that is another way to look at it. But those 22 games you've selected include 16 in which he was playing in a dramatically reduced role and was nowhere near game shape because he missed virtually the entire season and 6 in which he was playing with a broken foot. Entering the playoffs last year, Connolly was viewed as an above average playoff performer. The '06 performance was obviously great and the '07 performance (9 points in 16 games) was pretty impressive at the time considering the circumstances. Last years playoff performance was clearly horrible, there's no way around it. But up until then, his reputation in the playoffs was very good. I just laugh at how six games from last year suddenly change his reputation in so many people's eyes. Especially considering how most of his teammates were just a bad, including the Vezina trophy winner. Of course, this is a "what have you done for me lately" crowd and many people are just looking for reasons to dislike him, so it's not surprising. My argument basically comes down to the opinion that up until last year, Connolly was an above average playoff performer. His performance in this years playoffs will go a long way towards determining whether his poor performance last year was a fluke (or perhaps the result of the foot injury) or whether it represents an actual decline. Last years playoffs and a generally poor performance this year naturally flow together in people's minds and may indicate a decline. It's definitely possible. But at the time of the foot injury last year, Connolly was in the midst of his best season ever and the Sabres leading scorer. Until this year, his problem has always been staying in the lineup. When he was in the line up, he produced. This year is the first year that he has been in the line up and not producing. Maybe it's a decline, maybe it's just a bad year. If it's just a bad year and he can return to form, he'll likely be a bargain 2nd/3rd center. It's impossible for us fans to predict this. Ruff and Regier hopefully have more information and can make an informed decision. We'll see.

I'll admit he's played better over the past stretch, but I figure he owes the franchise at least that much after stealing their money for the past 5 years.
Eleven Posted April 1, 2011 Report Posted April 1, 2011 At Mothers. Any number of establishments, actually. The guy even hangs out at college bars.
