deluca67 Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 There needs to be a zero tolerance when it come to Bertuzzi.
thesportsbuff Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 No suspension? LOL. I guess we should have expected that but.. seriously? The NHL is a circus and Bettman and Campbell are the biggest clowns of the whole show. There is no way you can look at that hit and say it wasn't a elbow and a headshot. It shouldn't matter if it's accidental or not. And especially considering it's BERTUZZI we're talking about... lol wow.
SwampD Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Oh lord. I always enjoy your take on these hits. It's a good thing you care so much, because even the guy that got hit didn't.

Whether or not they should be is a good question, but as of today, that is not an issue up for suspension. That brings it down to the question of whether or not it was an elbow.
X. Benedict Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 DFreePress: Johnson continued to play and was adamant afterward that Bertuzzi didn’t intend to cause injury. Bertuzzi sought out Johnson while he was getting minor treatment immediately after the incident. “I don’t think it was malicious,” Johnson said. “He was very apologetic. He came in here.” http://www.freep.com/article/20110329/SPORTS05/110329041/0/FEATURES07/No-suspension-coming-Wings-forward-Todd-Bertuzzi-?odyssey=nav|head

It was an elbow and a headshot, and it was penalized. I just don't think there was intent to injure. Try running backward into a a wall with a stick in your hands. What do your arms do?
thesportsbuff Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 I don't care if there was " intent to injure " or not. There's probably never intent to injure. That doesn't make a clean hit. You just said it yourself -- it was an elbow and a headshot. If the NHL wants headshots out of the game then there should have been a suspension. Guess Bettman and the boys are just all talk.

There is all kinds of contact to the head in a hockey game. This is a league where guys get 5 minutes for punching people in the head. Isn't that a head-shot too. Isn't that clear intent? Betruzzi accidentally let an elbow run up and got 5 minutes and was thrown out. The guy wasn't hurt. Right call, play on. IMO.

But if he would have gotten hurt, it should have been a suspension? If that's the standard, they'll never succeed in ridding the game of head shots. Players are going to keep doing it if they don't think they're gonna hurt the guy. It was still a big hit and could easily have resulted in a concussion.
Mango Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 agreed punishment fit the crime(and possibly then some). this is a none issue, panties are in a bunch over bertuzzi. guy went down bc he was skating with his head down, rattled, and jarred, went back in.

But that's what you're missing, the league says they DO care about intent... This was not an intentional head shot. It doesn't even look like an intentional elbow. Johnson pulled up, Bert had to adjust his approach, got off-balance, elbow came up to correct his balance....

Suspensions can't legislate what wasn't intended in the first place. It was an accident.

Suspensions can't legislate what wasn't intended in the first place. It was an accident. They will never fully get rid of it, but they can definitely cut the numbers back significantly. They'll figure out at some point that they need to do something about this, but I could see that taking at least 10 more years.
korab rules Posted March 30, 2011 Report Posted March 30, 2011 I am confused by the verbiage people are using - I thought the term "head shot" meant intent to make contact with the head. Do others use it to describe any contact to the head, whether intended or accidental?
