LET"S GO BUFFALO Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 I look at these ESPN power rankings every week...they are rather lopsided I feel but slowly but surely the Sabres have moved from a rank of 30th to 13th...now although 13th is not that great of a number you have to remember ESPN is very much a Versus in that they are in love with the Big markets...also we jumped from 17th, which is where we had been for about a month http://espn.go.com/nhl/powerrankings
Supersabre Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 It's nice to see that the Sabres are finally getting some props.
neverenough Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 The hell with props.I want the CUP!
Buffalo Wings Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 I look at these ESPN power rankings every week...they are rather lopsided I feel but slowly but surely the Sabres have moved from a rank of 30th to 13th...now although 13th is not that great of a number you have to remember ESPN is very much a Versus in that they are in love with the Big markets...also we jumped from 17th, which is where we had been for about a month http://espn.go.com/nhl/powerrankings I've always looked at power rankings with a grain of salt. They're more of an opinion poll than anything else, but this is nuts... The Penguins move from 14 to 4, Buffalo moves from 17 to 13, Kings move to 6 from 11, Wings move to 7 from 3, and the Canadiens move from 8 to 17. I've never seen that many huge jumps in a power ranking in ANY sport.
dEnnis the Menace Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 The Guys who do the power rankings switch every week, so one week the Sabres may be at 17th because Pierre likes them there, and the next week they go to 13th because the other guy likes them there. There's huge moves like this all the time and it drives me nuts.
Buffalo Wings Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 The Guys who do the power rankings switch every week, so one week the Sabres may be at 17th because Pierre likes them there, and the next week they go to 13th because the other guy likes them there. There's huge moves like this all the time and it drives me nuts. That makes it less meaningful, if you ask me. You need the same perspective each week in order for these rankings to mean anything. Even if Pierre and whoever collaborate on them, that's fine. Otherwise, having different perspectives per week really lessens the legitimacy of this (whatever legitimacy there was).
Weave Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Those rankings are for sparking discussion, and to lure fans to their website. Nothing more. They mean nothing so who does them and how much they change is irrelevant.
LET"S GO BUFFALO Posted March 29, 2011 Author Report Posted March 29, 2011 I simply found it interesting the Buffalo at one point of the season was ranked 30th and now have climb to 13th...personally ESPN hardly knows who Buffalo is they almost never get air time on sportcenter unless it is the playoffs ( not that hockey does anyways) and they almost never have articles that talk about the Buffalo yet you may see about 5 a week about Sidney Crosby...as far as ESPN goes this ranking was like a Valentine for Buffalo
IKnowPhysics Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 I abandoned ESPN when they abandoned hockey. Despite their understandable all-Canadian-homerism-all-the-time, TSN is the new hockey media god. Yes, I'm aware that 20% of TSN is owned by ESPN, likely the crappy 20%. TSN Power Rankings Sabres: 16
dEnnis the Menace Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 It really sucks that NBC and VS have the contract for the NHL broadcasting. Seeing NBA highlights dominate the top 10 plays night after night sucks, especially since all of the NBA plays look pretty much the same to me (I loathe basketball for some unknown reason). ESPN focuses primarily on NFL, MLB, and NBA in that order, with special attention to NCAA Basketball and football during their respective seasons. All other sports take a back burner. They run so many stories on Sid and AO because they are the "faces of the league". No reason to pay much more attention than that in their minds. If only I got TSN
LET"S GO BUFFALO Posted March 29, 2011 Author Report Posted March 29, 2011 ESPN had the opportunity to continue playing hockey but they gave up at the lockout...hockey blew up and is widely more successful then it was before the lockout...in my opinion ESPN missed out because personally NBA is lagging amongst the top 4 sports...beyond the playoffs i find NBA extremely boring and predictable...wow the LAKERS and CELTICS are good again who figured
Calvin Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 i'd rather we go into the playoffs with little or no attention at all, laying low and then pouncing!
IKnowPhysics Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Bonus: TSN.ca's menu bar lists the NHL first. The NFL is listed between the CFL and Curling.

will Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 more espn love, via DBtB. i could write a book about how espn is trying to make hockey irrelevant. they aren't even trying to be sneaky about it. personally, i liked the yahoo article late last week (can't find it now) about the four teams that will outperform their playoff seeding. obviously, chicago was in the discussion, but so was buffalo.

The NHL took a bigger tv contract from OLN than what ESPN was offering. They didn't offer all that much, but then again, why should they have with where the NHL was at that point?

Agreed - ESPN is just a self-referential entity. Sportscenter is an hour-long promo show for other shows/sports shown on ESPN. When they dropped hockey, they also almost completely neglected to cover it at all. Just as well though - I think Barry Melrose is just a worthless panderer.
LabattBlue Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 It's a stupid power ranking(whatever the heck that means). Who cares.
spndnchz Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 I abandoned ESPN when they abandoned hockey. TSN Power Rankings Sabres: 16 And 80% of ESPN is owned by Disney. Mickey Mouse.
todzilla Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 I stick with the NHL Network On The Fly show for nightly scores and recaps. They play more than the goals and use the home team announcer during the highlight.
IKnowPhysics Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 And 80% of ESPN is owned by Disney. Mickey Mouse. Meaning 16% of TSN is mousketeers, I know, but that's better than most. The other 20% of EPSN is Hearst (Redbook, Seventeen, Good Housekeeping, A&E Television). I don't have TIME for this MICKEY MOUSE BULL ######.
Supersabre Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 And 80% of ESPN is owned by Disney. Mickey Mouse. Excellent point!!
