spndnchz Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Ranked in Hockey News http://www.thehockey...HL-players.html Only player to beat him.... Cooke. I personally love his style of play.
inkman Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 I've long been on the fence with what Patty does on the ice. His hits are almost always of the "running guys" variety. While I love the physical aspect of hockey, Kaleta just seems to do it a little wrong. He usually hits within NHL "rules", but clearly he has taken it to the most extreme level. His head jerking stuff has to go, he looks like a Pez dispenser every game.
carpandean Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 I find it hard to take any ranking seriously that includes 11 players in the "top 10". If you have a tie at 4th, then the next player is the 6th, not 5th. Also, how is Jarkko Ruutu not on this list? He's one of the few guys that I say "hate" and actually mean hate.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Kaleta is carnival trash, but he does try hard. It's one thing to be a pest, but it's another thing to do things like turtle, slewfoot, etc. I am not surprised players don't respect him. Barnaby was the same player and talked trash, but he took on all comers and had a respect for the other guy in an altercation.
2ForTripping Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 I believe it is the "local boy" angle that greatly contributes to the terrapins popularity

Sabre Dance Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Kaleta is a hitter, not a fighter (although he has proven he can throw them pretty well when he wants to). I think he tries to stay within the rules (mostly) but sometimes tries too hard to make a hit and it winds up looking like a cheap shot. He also tries to draw the extra penalty all the time by letting an opponent smack him in the kisser and then backing down. I think he would have more respect in the league if he dropped the gloves just a little more often...
spndnchz Posted March 23, 2011 Author Report Posted March 23, 2011 We haven't seem him in a while, but I don't remember him turtling this year. Or going out of his way to bang someone. He does need work on his 'game'. His play makes other players get off their game IMO.

Personally, I think some of Kaleta's hits are borderline. I don't like the fact that he'll go out of his way to dish out a hit instead of back checking on many occasions. But with that said I do like how he is an upgrade to Peters, and has potential to continue to grow and improve.

Any opinion of him is going to start with that fact right there. Then mix in the diving/turtling and the reputation gets that much worse.
X. Benedict Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Kaleta makes some beautiful hard textbook hits. Players hate those. Today they fight after them. Kaleta also often leaves his feet. Players hate that too. It's dirty. Kaleta has made the last second miss something of an artform. He'll skate in hard enough to decapitate a player, and then let them dodge it. There's no contact, but players shake their heads and say, "if I hadn't of moved he would have killed me." There's no penalty because there is no contact. But players are like anyone else at the workplace, they want to be comfortable and not dodging death. But Kaleta is probably saying, "Lucky, I missed. You really could get hurt badly."

dumb_dumb88 Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 The moment a player attempts to "head butt" another player, he's lost all credibility in my opinion. I don't want Kaleta on this team, Buffalo Boy or not. He gives the Sabres a bad reputation with some of the stunts he pulls. Not that I am a Kaleta hater, but even the wife agrees, he's not worthy to wear the blue & gold given some of the malicious behavior he has shown.
SabresFan526 Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Kaleta is an impact player in that he can easily swing the momentum of the game. He is exactly the type of player every team wants and needs. When he gets under the opponent's skin, it is usually as a result of a big time hit that was somewhat legal that causes the other team to go after him and take a stupid penalty. His big hits also get the Sabres team going and they feed off of it. I think his offensive game is improving, and that combined with his improved defensive game will really make him a solid two-way player. I could easily see Kaleta being a 15-20 goal scorer, penalty killer, and defensive forward playing against the other team's top line. He's only going to get better. I don't care if players on the other team hate him. Everyone in the NHL hates Sean Avery including his own teammates. So what? Also, one thing I will say is that Kaleta is "generally" not a dirty player. He does not really board anyone. He does not directly go for hits to the heads, he never uses his elbow, and pretty much goes after people with his shoulder. I will say that he often hits people late and should be called for charging more frequently. However, the charging penalty these days only refers to players leaving their feet, which he will sometimes do, but he does frequently hit players well after they have gotten rid of the puck which should justify a 2 minute charging penalty if he skates a good distance to hit that guy. Either way, I love him on the Sabres, and I think the Sabres team really feeds off of the energy he brings with a big hit or a penalty drawn.
DaFan Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Kaleta also often leaves his feet. Players hate that too. It's dirty. Something that has driven me nuts for 40+ years... and everyone says it... It should be he leaves the ICE...not feet.. how does one leave their feet? Where do they put them? Ok.. sorry but had to put it out there it drives me nuts!!!

sabills Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 I think we'd like Kaleta even more if this team was more consistent on the PP(though they have been BETTER this year). Overall, the only thing about him I don't really like is his injuries, though I do recognize with his game that'll happen. And good, glad they hate him. The more they pay attention to hating him the less they pay attention to the puck.

Since ice in it's natural state is really water, but is artificially kept below 32 degrees inside the arena? I'd even settle for "Leaves the very slow oxygen and hydrogen molecules".

Agree w/ most all of that. I'd add, as others here have, that he tends to have a lot of hits that are borderline interference/charging as the puck has been away from the target for a long time before he gets to them. The 'late' hit being another major factor in why opposing players don't like playing against him. (I'd actually say he throws the seriously late hit far more often than the occassional 'flying' Dutchman.) Throw in the, 'is Kaleta going to fight when I pop him in the head or is he going to turn into a rag doll' and it isn't surprising that opposing players really aren't planning on putting him on their Christmas Card list. While he has actually displayed some hockey skills this season, unless they continue to improve to the point that he doesn't feel the compulsion to constantly be a human cannonball on the ice; I don't see him making that top 11 list in 3 years, as he will be on the 'retired - hockey(?) related injury' list. If he loses that compulsion w/out improving the other areas of his game some more, I still don't see him making that list as I think you have to actually play in the NHL in order to be included.
X. Benedict Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 I've wondered if that was on purpose... I'm pretty sure it is.
OverPowerYou Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 In his NHL career, Kaleta has never played more than 55 games in a single season. I think that's a perfect amount of games for Kaleta due to his style of play. If he played anymore games than he currently does, he wouldn't be as aggressive every single game, as he is now.
Kristian Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Ranked in Hockey News http://www.thehockey...HL-players.html Only player to beat him.... Cooke. I personally love his style of play. First clue that this ranking shouldn't be given the time of day : "Either way, Neil balances out the good vibes created by good guy Daniel Alfredsson." "Good guy" Daniel Alfredsson is a cheapshotting POS, punk-ass puke, who routinely run players head first in to the boards from behind, and fired a full slapper directly at Niedermayer with time running out in the 07 finals. Yup, real class-act for you there.
