nfreeman Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Lots of great posts and observations in this thread. I agree with many of the observations about Gerbe (surprisingly good on the backcheck too), Ennis and Mancari generally and Vanek's lousy game tonight. That was a great win. This team has a number of flaws -- like, say, playing lousy at home -- but plenty of good qualities as well. Not least of which is, they play with a surprising amount of physical toughness and, on the road at least, mental toughness. Yet another goose egg from the alleged "top 6." While Gerbe is brimming with confidence right now, Stafford has completely lost his mojo. Good, tough effort from the D tonight. Myers and Sekera were much more solid than vs. Nashville. The Rangers are still catchable -- but the playoffs are still missable. Very strong game from Miller tonight. I still would like to see Enroth get a start pretty soon though. Go Sabres.
LaLaLaFontaine Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 I am really impresses of Gerbe. He fights for every puck, he is just an energy bundle. I like player like him. Miller did also a great job tonight. Go Sabres!
carpandean Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 That said, even the worst match-ups probably wouldn't be all that different than 50/50. I'd say, at best, a game would be 67/33 (roughly 2:1) for win/loss, which is then diluted by the OT/SO wins. Roughly 1/8 of games (12.5%) go to OT. So, worst case scenario (Sabres play a tough opponent; Carolina plays a weak opponent), you are looking at about a 53% chance that the Sabres do as well (39.5% chance of W/W, OL/OL, L/L) or better (3.8% chance of L/OL, OL/W, and 9.7% chance of L/W), plus another 8% chance that Carolina only gains 1 point (OL/L, W/OL). This leaves just a 39% chance that Carolina gains 2, which would still put them 1 point behind with 9 to go. Even "as well as" would increase the Sabres' chances, because there would be one less game. Also, even if Caroline gains one point, the difference in effect as compared to gaining two points is big (using Sports Club Stats' numbers, it's less than a 4% change, as compared to roughly an 11% swing for gaining 2; only 9% if they win in the SO.) Would have liked that 9.7% chance event, but still improved our chances.
wjag Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Wow, sure is a lot of Gerbil love in here. So whom will the angry mob  turn on now that the Gerbil isn't the favorite whipping boy?

I agree with all of this. Lack of scoring especially from Vanek and Stafford concerns me. Scoring doesn't get any easier in the post season. The've got to keep the throttle to the floor, Carolina ain't going away. The play of Gerbe and Ennis is showing me where the issues with this team really reside. The two little guys (and Mancari too really since his callup) have shown me that players like Stafford and Vanek really do not rise to the occassion. Vanek has been getting helpers but this is the time of year when you need your clutch guys to put the puck in the net. Ennis, Gerbe, and to a lesser extent Boyes have been showing the 3 vet Sabres how that gets done. It was a needed win and is starting to give me some confidence too. I still have my reservations about the little guys and their effectiveness in April games but at least it looks like those two are going to carry the team and give me the chance to see and evaluate how they do in the playoffs. If it were left up to the others we might be on the outside looking in. Good on Gerbe. He's doing better than I expected.
Wraith Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 2) Gerbe our new Drury? That was the best empty goal that I have ever seen, raping PK was the cherry on top...... I loved Gerbe's goal but the best Sabre empty netter in recent history has to be Drew Stafford's against the Rangers in the 2007 playoffs. Jaromir Jagr was literally on Staff's back by the time Drew got the shot off to seal the victory. I think it was game 1, if I remember correctly.

I'm really disappointed with Roy's healing process. He's young enough and should be putting in enough rehab time to be able to heal faster than that. Inexcusable. How's that Jag?

Assquatch Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Arse splinters can be career ending and in this case lets hope so....... Get well soon Patty. It has recently been proven that nobody can work the door to the bench as safely and efficiently as you do.

carpandean Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Anyone else notice the little streak we have going? Three game "unbeaten" streak. God bless the NHL's terminology!

TV's recent bout of ineffectiveness (many missed scoring chances notwithstanding) coincides with his move to TC's line. TC drags down the play of those around him, and drags down the play of Vanek in particular. Vaneks chances of late have been ones that he has created, not feeds from TC. Whoever ends up on TC's line seems to go into a slump. Pommer has been invisible since TC was moved to center on that line as well. Its a trend that I have noticed throughout the year. I can't believe I am going to say this, but I can't wait until Hecht is our first line center again.
Stoner Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 You are right about Gerbe, I think a lot of it has to do with confidence and knowing what he has to do to be successful. When he got called up earlier in the season, he was watching and trying to be fancy. Now he has unleashed his inner Bulldog and he is successful.........He is a joy to watch....... I shudder at the phrase "unleash your inner Bulldog." Chris Parker was seen at Mighty Taco last night.
nobody Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 Contrary to popular opinion as proven tonight, size doesn't matter. :D You just need to know how to use your hockey stick.
Assquatch Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 You just need to know how to use your hockey stick. You put it in, you put it out, and you shake it all about. Mix up the order as you please.
wjag Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 After having the chance to think about that game last night, that effort and goal by Gerbe might have been the singlest biggest play by a Sabres player in a long time. Single biggest being an arbitray assesmment based on time and space. That goal, at that moment, in that fashion was just huge. That goal let all the air out of the building and the game. Considering the Rangers and Canes already won, it was an absolute must for Buffalo to keep pace. That goal was everybit as huge as Nashville's tying goal the other night.

It's going to be a great finish indeed. I hate to jinx it, but after last night, the Habs (and 6th place) are only 6 points up on us with one more game played. It's not inconceivable that we could get up to six. It's also not inconceivable that we could miss the playoffs entirely. And with games remaining the Hurricanes, Rangers, Devils, and Leafs (all teams in that same mix for spots 6-7-8), it's a great couple of weeks of hockey ahead. At least it is exciting! I just hope that Canes game still means something big when April rolls around. As for Stafford's lost mojo, at least that contract he's going to be asking for in the Summer has dropped back down into the reasonable range!

LGR4GM Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 is stafford expendable since he is streaky at best?
Weave Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 is stafford expendable since he is streaky at best? Would look nice in a package for a #1 center. ETA- I think nearly all goal scorers are streaky to a good extent. I think the question with Stafford is, is the guy who got all those hatties and burned up the middle of the season the real Stafford, or is the real Stafford the guy who isn't noticed sometimes for entire games?.
shrader Posted March 23, 2011 Report Posted March 23, 2011 One thing that seems to have gone unnoticed about Stafford lately is that suddenly he's out there on the PK from time to time. There has to have been a big change in his game to be getting that ice time because at this time last year, he didn't have a clue what defense was.
