You better duck.

And get over yourself, you immature, pathetic, young whippersnapper. ;)

If he didn't read the whole thread he might think you are being serious.

Nah, 526 has been here a while. He'll get the joke.

Or at least he'll go and read the whole thread before responding. B-)

I think this thread has completely been hijacked, and I will be honest, I have not read much of this thread. However, I have to say, I'm still bitter with how things ended with Hasek. I'm still also very bitter about how things ended with Peca too. So, I'm not terribly thrilled about Hasek's return as he does not bleed for the Buffalo Sabres given how things ended.

However, there's no doubt, he and Perrault are the two best Sabres players of all time. No question about it. He was better than everyone in the league and single handedly put the team on his back regularly. The team was completely talentless around him, and he was the only guy who elevated the entire team. The 2001-2002 season proved how important he was to the team. The team had no talent and no goalie and it was a terrible year.

But, I'm still bitter. He was a cry-baby and whiner and prevented the Sabres from acquiring Sergei Federov because he didn't want the team to trade good players and prevent his chance for winning the Cup. It was always about him.

I guess time heals all wounds and if the Canadiens and Patrick Roy can reconcile, I presume the Sabres and Hasek can reconcile, but I'm still bitter.

I have been completely swayed by this thread. A complete 180. I no longer am bitter or hold a grudge against Hasek. He did what he had to do.

It's Peca I now hate.

I just re-read the whole thread. Apparently, if you disagree with the vocal majority you must be a young person who is immature. Too bad that a message board dedicated specifically to the opinions of the fan base must turn into everyone agreeing and having the same opinion about a controversial player in Sabres history. Personally, I'd like to have an opinion and not be told what to think or be insulted or shamed into thinking something else. I commend Wolf and Weave for keeping this very cordial and holding the fort down with the minority opinion. Thanks for giving me the room to speak.

I am proud to say that I am part of the vocal minority on this. If I were actually at the game, it's unlikely that I would boo. That's pretty classless, but I have been known to say classless things at games about opposing team players, especially those that are concussion prone and trying to mix it up at the end of a game that Buffalo just won with Stafford scoring a hat trick.

Look, he was a great goalie, perhaps the greatest goalie of all time especially when you consider the talent around him. But, being the greatest goalie in the world does not mean you can play GM and determine who you can be traded for. What do I care if he goes home and retires? Either way he had already decided that he was going to screw over the organization, why should we have any part in his screwing over the organization by sending him to a Cup Contender for absolutely nothing of value in return? As a Sabres fan, all I care about is the return we get from a trade of such magnitude. Frankly, even if we don't get a roster player like Federov, Lidstrom, Yzerman, or someone good, then the Sabres should get 10 first round draft picks and own Detroit's draft stockpile for 10 years. If Holland doesn't bite, then thanks Dom for the great seasons and enjoy your retirement. He has no right to play GM.

Whatever, it's over now and the stupid ceremony already happened. He was a great player for the Sabres, but he screwed the organization, and as a fan, I have problems with it. Like Weave and Wolf, I'm willing to get over the bitterness if there was even the slightest mea culpa. But, given the reception, there won't be.

Look out for this week's ceremony when Atlanta and New Jersey come to town when the Sabres will be honoring the illustrious Sabre careers of Slava Kozlov and Andy Delmore. Honestly, I would have been happy, supportive, and ecstatic of even a Yuri Khmylev celebration more than Hasek and he was a generally good guy and an okay player. Oh well.

The one thing I heard him say that always angered me was when he said, "...I will be forever a Red Wing." While I have nothing against him honoring his team that won the cup, saying that was a slap in the face to the organization that openned the door to his great career. It was the Sabres that acquired him as a back up goalie in Chicago, made him a starter, he excelled and made it to a Stanley Cup Final.

Time has past. I do forgive him. I'm glad to see him back and receiving a standing O. Keeping his charity work in Buffalo going certainly demonstrates fine character. Burying the hatchet is the right thing to do.

Yeah, that's the quote that put me off, too. No doubt that Hasek was one of the greatest goalies (maybe the greatest) of all time. I too have lots of great memories of his time in Buffalo. I know he left under.....distressing circumstances. I'm guessing that when he arrived in the Detroit locker room, it was like heaven for him to be surrounded by quality players. Good for him, I guess. However, even though he played the bulk of his career here in Buffalo, I imagine that he really does think of himself as a Red Wing as that is where he won the Cup. I certainly have no way of knowing, but it would be interesting to find out whether Dom has wanted to be included back in the Sabres' fold all this time or if he was simply answering "yes" when asked to appear by Pegula. Even more interesting would be to know whether Dom received an "honorarium" to appear. (It's just business, right?)

In the Baseball Hall of Fame, players who were with more than one team can choose the team they want to go into the Hall as a member of. I don't know if the same holds true for the NHL, but I'd imagine that if Dom has that choice, he would pick the Red Wings. Frankly, I'm too old and life is too short to hold a grudge. If Dom makes happy with the new Sabres' regime, good for both of them. If they haul his jersey up to the rafters, well that's OK too I guess. Just don't expect me to get choked up when they do it.

In the NHL HoF players aren't assigned to a team the way they are in baseball. So whether he'd consider himself a Hawk, Sabre, Wing, or Otter is immaterial.

Sabres will retire Hasek's number as soon as he retires. He's going to play another season in the KHL. He wants to add Championship there to his repertoire.

Of course when anyone goes to the Hockey HOF and takes a look at the Stanley Cup at the year the Red Wings won - they will see that Dom is a Red Wing forever.

And if they look at the Hart, Vezina, or Lester B. Pearson (according to a quick google search, they renamed this?! :o )trophies...

What on earth??? Is he trying to be the George Blanda of Hockey?

Nuthin' about nuthin' but back in my trouble makin' days I used to own a baseball hat that said DILLIGAF. It never failed to get a "what does DILLIGAF mean?" response.

I was curious so I looked this word up and all I can say is

so is the point of the dilligaf comment that Hasek had that look on face at some point? I thought he looked a little nervous. O well happy homecoming and the tpegs charm continues to make this organization look better and better. It is beyond amazing to know that this organization is making its image less about the mistakes and more about the good times. Hasek, is probably one of the most deserving sabres to have his number retired by the organization. Even if you hate him for what he did, the guy is good, scary good.

Not to set off a whole other discussion, but do you retire a player's jersey because he A) played awesome hockey for your team over a decent amount of time? B) Was a heart-and-soul kind of a guy who the team and fans looked up to or C) A combination of both of the above? The guys whose jersey you want to retire should fall into category "C" in my way of thinking. Dom was a great goalie for the team, but I think he falls into category "A". He never gave me the warm fuzzies when he played. Frankly, there are other players who I think deserve their jersey to be retired before getting to Hasek (who is actually still playing, albeit not in the NHL).

Schoenfeld, Foligno, maybe even Ruff? (all team captains, by the way...) I would go with one of them before getting to the Dominator.... My 2 cents...

Cool. More fuel to the fire.

Given the way Dom acted, especially his last few years in Buffalo, there are other guys who were on the ice while Dom was here that I think deserve the honor more, if for no ther reason than becuase they never gave up and did their best to make the colors proud. Gimme Curtis Brown and Alexei Zhitnick first. They neve gave up and feigned injury when things got frustrating.

Now, having said that......... We have too damned many numbers retired already fer cryin' out loud. There are what? 7 numbers up in the rafters? And another when Dom hangs it up? That's an awful lot for a team that's never won a Stanley Cup and never had a long successful winning run. With all of the wiining history that Detroit has, IIRC they only have 5 numbers up in the rafters with a 6th coming when Lids retires. And they are an original 6 team with a history of Stanley Cups. That, my friends, is how it should be.

I would say you hang a players number up if they were great and played great for you. Just because he left doesn't mean he somehow does not deserve his jersey retired. We would retire Ruff's jersey now why? Because he is coach forever? Players get their jerseys retired because they played great hockey for an extended period of time and its with your team. Idk if Hasek should be excluded because he is left like a douche, thats all I mean.

Dom would be 7. The six that are already there (The French Connection, Tim Horton, Danny Gare, and Lafontaine) all deserve it in my opinion, as all fit into Category C that was listed above. I personally don't really care if Dom's number goes up there, the one banner I really want to see go up is the one that says STANLEY CUP CHAMPS...

After reading this I have to agree that true greats should go up in the rafters and Doms status as one is slightly hazy.

LOL

Listen I stand up and cheer whenever Timmay C gets crunched into the boards. Does that make me classeless? Cant stand that chump.

Dom stirs strong feelings. I've spoken mine and am not going to keep on repeating like a couple others over and over and over and over and over and ...

I think I knew from the first comment where people stand.

Agreed - you can't retire everyone's number - it loses its meaning.

I'll take this over a #39 ANY DAY!!
