New goal song (old White thread)

Call me crazy but "Swords of A Thousand Men" sounds like a rip off of "Holiday Road", the theme from the Vacation movies. It's just at a different speed....

"Sorry folks! We're closed for two weeks!"

I think Swords predates the movie by a couple years, so who's ripping off whom? :)

Posted

Tried to. Not enough time. I can't believe they think they can fit in the horn, the siren, Rick's call and the song.

Cut the siren! "Sorry siren, you've had a good run, but we're sending you down to Portland."

The Pug Mahones are an irih punk band from Buffalo led by the former lead singer from Jackdaw, Mike Jordan. We won Best Original Alternative Band at the Nightlife Music and Club Awards in 2011. We have been playing in and around Buffalo for 4+ years at many of Buffalo's finest venues and establishments. We are huge Sabres fans and play an original song called All For One. When we play this song live we often change the words to fit a sabres theme. Although I have no video of us doing this song, attached is the mp3 version I know it would make a great Sabres goal/fight song.

first off, welcome to the board. :)

second, it's not a bad song. i'd like to hear the live version with the sabres lyrics inserted for more of a contextual idea of using it as a goal song. but that's just me.

I think it'd be great for the Sabres to have their 'own' unique goal celebration song. The one the Hawks play is pretty campy but it works.

Not sold on the one Jeremy White proposed, but if it doesn't work I have faith that the Pegula crew will find one that does.

I'm still partial to the Kings. (For a goal celebration using some portion(s) of the piece from 2:40 through 3:12.)

I hadn't heard this tune in years, and now I can't get it out of my head. :beer:

This is a prime example of what we are dealing with when the public is involved in musical choice. I don't like Tynan to begin with and his relationship with the team....but what he did to the National Anthem was 10x the butcher job that Christina did at the SuperBowl. And all the little ponies fall into a line saying how great it is. Here is John Vogl saying "Tynan, light's out as usual."

Vogl the musical master

I know a few of us were offended on game night, but given the sad selection and throat cramming of this 1,000 manswords, I felt this warranted a revisit given the free pass given.

@45 seconds "twilight's las leaming"

@54 seconds "perilous flight"

@1:09 "rocket red's glare"

@1:25 "proof to the night"

Not to mention the actual musical screwjob he did to the song.

I just bring this up, because if for some reason I am forced to listen to a POS song the next decade that was selected on the whim of a teenage girl by suggestion of a radio hack.....don't expect me to sing it. Don't expect me to get excited about it. And when everyone else is stroking their swords, I will use that to my advantage and run to the beer stand, marveling once again how the Sabres and emasculinization go hand in hand.

I don't think I would have caught that in real time. But they're clearly there.

Emasculinization on a hockey board. That's a first for me on a message board and actually the first I have ever seen the word used anywhere. Well done.. So just so I get this right, you don't like the song? :lol:

I looked back at the gameday thread....all 7 pages of it BP (Before Pegula), and PA was all over the flubs.

I like the idea of NATURALLY DEVELOPING a traditional song. It almost seems as if the new crew has their heart in the right place, but are lacking discernment on many fronts.

Dwight,

I'm all for 'naturally developing a traditional song.' Any thoughts on how to make that happen?

Use the offseason where things aren't so busy. It's funny.....Darcy, Lindy and the roster are being kept on and we are being told "PATIENCE", yet at the same time we have all these artificial "traditions" being thrown at us. We haven't had a goal song for 40 years.....why in 3 weeks do we run with the first lame suggestion some radio hack makes? We haven't had a crest on the carpet in 40 years. Why in 3 weeks is it a mortal sin for a guy who is only doing his job, to walk on something meant for walking on...and to be lambasted by guys who weren't worthy of a captaincy so we had to bring in an over the hill defenseman to hand it to?

What we have are a couple of yahoos looking for attention, getting in the ear of the excitable new owners...and the owners not having the discernment to say, "thanks but no thanks".

The offseason is boring. Someone had a good suggestion of doing an Americal Idol style thing with local songwriters/bands. You can do that over 5 months easy. If you want an existing riff to go with...fine. If I'm going to be stuck listening to a corny song the rest of my hockey watching life.....at least let non-attention whores get a crack at it. Just the fact that this song arrived by a grown man stalking underage girls on the internet is reason enough to shitcan it.

OK...here's an idea.

Right now the defacto celebration is a bunch of English pipsqueaks talking about England at best, and a coming out party at worst. Because the word sword was used, it somehow found relevance.

I don't know about you, but I am not attached to a Sabre in any way. If you want to get my blood pumping or stir passion....it is about BUFFALO. The city, it's people, it's traditions. If you want to honor and respect a team, and develop something that means a great deal to the area, wouldn't it make sense to focus on what makes BUFFALO great and have meaning to the area?

The first thing that came to mind which would work on many levels is to honor the animal itself, and the native americans who respected the buffalo over almost all other things. Our entire area is a result of the natives and our city and surrounding towns are named in connection. If you want to show that we are a team of hard working, respectful, wise, and close knit players and fans....why not show it by honoring the very people and animal that paved the way for us all to be here today?

We have such a big population of natives here that it would be easy to go to them first and ask if this would be respectful given the circumstances. Heck, go in house and ask some of the Bandits. Maybe they would enjoy it. I know teams such as Atlanta and FSU and Washington have names and chants that sometimes fall under the PC scrutiny, but this would be about BUFFALO. The city, our history, it's people, and everything the Buffalo represents. It shows untity, respect, efficiency, and survival. What more could you ask for.

Here is one example, but if we could get a blessing from the local community and they could work something with the team, I think it would be a much deeper symbol of what we are all about instead of a pop song by anyone. We are already bombarded at the arena for 3 hours by corporate shilling, bright lights, and overstimulation. How about 30 seconds after a goal where no music needs to be pumped in, but the natural energy of 19,000 people signals to everyone what this team, it's fans, and their city is all about?

1. The Native Americans would demand we build them a casino in the lobby of the HSBC in exchange for their blessing.

2. The Iroquois Federation native to the Buffalo area never saw a bison. There were woods bison at one time, but they were mostly confined to the fringes of the Great Plains.

I understand where you are going with this, but the correlation is more strained than the throat of the sword swallower who wrote the swords of 1,000 men.

It would be nice to have a "grass roots" celebration that doesn't need to be aided by the jumbotron and sound system.

If it ends up being a song, so be it. Just feels like we're going to the VIP with the first stripper we saw as we walked through the door at the Downer. Sit back, relax, have a few, and do some scouting.

Agreed - everyone is all giddy, including Buffalo's new first family. They are getting their ya ya's out, showing they meant it when they said things will change and money is no object. Cooler heads will prevail. I get the feeling that Ted Black is the cooler head. Once the novelty wears off and things settle down he will make sure things progress in an orderly fashion.

The pegula girls are like fat girls at the sundae bar their first semester at college right now. By Thanksgiving break, they will be out shopping for larger jeans and won't have time for goal songs

Interesting thoughts. I don't have the time right now to fully digest them, but will try to respond back this weekend.

A few years back, GR55 had folks sending in clips for the playoff run. If you used then suggestion box or GR55, I'd bet folks could come up with a 20 second or so clip that would work.

I don't know if it's giddiness so much as it is most of the fan base expecting instant changes. This is about all they can do right now before real change sets in once the season is over.

safe to say that a lot of people don't care for tynan and that a good number see him as an annoying, cloying, maudlin self-promoter.

i think it was quinn who fancied tynan. which is telling. didn't LQ have some horsesh!t quote from tynan-as-motivational-speaker inscribed somewhere in the locker room -- the will is inside you, or some rubbish like that?

if i never see that man [EDIT: quinn or tynan] in hsbc arena again, i will be glad of it.

Enough of the double amputee Irish orthopedic doctor paralympian tenors they keep sending us. :D

I can see how he's not some people's cup of tea, but I've never found him offensive. But then again, I'm not two old jewish ladies either.

I saw them in concert at the Rusty Nail in Limestone in '74.

Maybe we can test, "Every female 18-30 weighing under a buck thirty that shows up to the arena in a bikini gets free beer and a free ticket to the Stanley Cup round".

When you are as in love with yourself as I am, you actually hire someone to move your own hand so you can concentrate on the mirror. :nana:

Yea for anyone who didn't make it to the game last night they played the "hell yea" goal song instead of over the hill with 1000 horny men, i mean gay men, i mean men who like swords, i mean over the hill men who need a thousand Viagra to fix their swords, i mean o well you get the point. :oops:

(truncated for brevity)

while i find the idea respectful to the indian community, i highly doubt any of the original native population ever laid eyes on an actual buffalo.

also, have you ever been around an actual buffalo? they're dirty, covered in sh**, and they smell exactly like it. now ... i don't know about you, but i don't know if honoring the sabres with a song about an animal that smells like lackawanna is doing the team any justice.

however, like i said, the sentiment in wanting to respect the original native population is one of the most forward-thinking ideas i've read on just about any sports message board. :)
