I'd say no. But there is one similarity...it wasn't until the Spring '06 that the defense really started skating like crazy.

Sekera-Montidor

Meyers-Leopold

Butler-Morrison

Are probably as fast as and have better shots than -

Campbell-Numinen

Tallinder-Lydman

Kalinin-McKee

Although the 06 version were better passers, and better on the PK.

This group is moving extremely well.

I wonder how the 06 d would compare to the 2011 crew? I know the 2011 charts say they are 17 with a 2.9 this year but if you go beyond those numbers and compared the number of odd man rushes given up, scoring chances per game, short handed goals surrendered, shots charts, giveaways in the defensive zone, pk, gaa, etc.etc.etc year to year i think the difference would be magnified and could be interesting. Granted ,defense is a team sport but imo, yes this d has more offensive punch, but at what price. They are sloppy in their own zone and i think it would be fair to say this is a team without a shut down pair. When they face a team with a strong forchecking game they trend to fall apart imo. Against average teams you tend to survive the majority of defensive zone mistakes but against good playoff teams you pay. You win with d , it is nice if they score too but d first.

The same Vanek who was praised by all last week for his comments about how "you can't miss games this time of year" after he was injured blocking a shot but didn't miss any time? That Vanek? Yeah, I'm betting he'll be ready by game time.

With 2 call ups, if it is Vanek, I doubt he plays tonight.

I only hope it is the flu and not his foot.

The call-ups are for Kaleta and Hecht/Grier (I can't remember for the life of me who was hurt first), no? If it's the flu I bet he plays. Just my two cents. You can't sit your best player at this point in the season, especially when we're already going to be shorthanded three of our grinders.

IIRC, the 06 D gave up a ton of odd man rushes.

I hope so.

Bill Hoppe has posted the power play units that he saw on the ice.

Here are the PP units.

12-57/42-22-63 - Mancari-Myers/Gerbe-Boyes-Ennis

3-44/19-21-29 - Leopold-Sekera/Connolly-Stafford-Pominville

Wanna know whats funny? The TSN power rankings list our only injury as roy, as opposed to hecht, kaleta, grier.... they fail seriously. Apparently all those guys either are unimportant or don't play for us... sigh wish at least vanek didn't come down with the flu (if its him) Guess we are going to have to dig extra deep tonight and hope Sekera and Myers feel like scoring goals from the blueline. Weber should be tossed back in the lineup and just move Sekera to forward for a game, it would be fun to watch at the very least (ps. sarcasm)

The one thing I notice that is definitely missing compared to that '06 group is the mental side of things Teppo brought to his game.

PLEASE have Myers on that first line instead of Gerbe

Keep Ennis out there for speed but we need a big D man out there and Myers def. will help much more than Gerbe would..

As for the second one, hopefully Sekera gets rewarded with more TOI, but Im not the coach...

Lindy is using the old mini Myers trick.

Myers has the puck at the point, draws in the defender up close, THEN WHAMO!, Gerbe pops out from behind Myers leg and takes off for the slot with a wrister that beats Fluery.....

so pegula is 5-0-2 as the new owner, does his ethusiasm transfer in some way because this team is not acting the same or even saying the same things it did a couple of weeks ago? Its now we have won, we must win, we will win... Guess its time to ask "Do you believe" Shades of 05-06 season are creeping in...

Nah i think they we're playing this good B4 the all-star break. It just stopped there momentum a little..

Sabres were 39-16-5 on March 8, 2006.

And those sweet passes that were so key to the Sabres' transition game.

Shades of Bills fans criticizing Bruce Smith for not playing with the flu in that playoff game in Pittsburgh mid 90s. Come on, it's the FLU. I don't care if you're big, black, mean and have balls the size of canned hams. It's the flu. Sometimes you can't lift your head off the pillow.

I'm not even going to ask about flu shots and NHL players again. I assume they get them and they are not effective for some reason. Maybe all the travel, the close, personal proximity to other athlets, the cold, the sweating, who knows.

Teppo was just amazing then, especially in his own zone. One touch to control the puck, a second touch to clear the zonee, right onto somebodies tape in stride.

If anyone watched Philly Sunday, that's what a team looks like playing with the flu.

Plus, we can tie the Rangers for 7th place tonight with a win.

If Buffalo wins, they will knock the Rangers down to 8th because of a higher points percentage, the first tie breaker. (Yes, DeLuca, points percentage, not winning percentage.)

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why doesn't everyone on every team just get a flu shot at the start of the season?

My employer has a couple days every Fall when flu shots are available on-site. You'd think with a billion dollar sport and teams worth hundreds of millions of dollars, they'd invest in some flu shots.
