Stoner Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Wow, did all that just happen? Before things get crazy with the deadline tomorrow, I thought it might be interesting to dish out some pluses and minuses to Terry Pegula after we've all had some time to digest his first few days. I'll give one of each, but don't take that to mean I think he's a break-even player at this point. My pluses would pretty significantly outweigh my minuses. Plus: Said he didn't plan to raise ticket prices, then reiterated that with the News, saying he was afraid of what people would think of someone as wealthy as he is coming in and raising prices. He mentioned the state of the local economy of late. Ted Black might not be completely on board. We'll see. Minus: Maybe not a big deal, but I didn't like him hiding out in the back of the box and watching his first game on TV. Everybody in the building was probably craning his or her neck to get a glimpse of the guy. He needed to be out front. I'll leave the puck behind the net for the next poster...

Think it's still too early. Initial reactions, at least my initial reactions, are bound to be superficial because we just don't know enough about the man or his way of doing business. That said, let me throw out a few initial, and superficial, reactions: The ticket price thing didn't do much for me. As your comment in bold indicates, Buffalo's economy is not built to lead to high costs for discretionary spending. Maybe that's why so many Canadians show up for the Leafs games -- because they're dirt cheap compared to Leaf ticket prices and assuming one could buy Leaf tickets. I'm more impressed by his seeming sincerity. Unlike, Tom G., who said from practically the outset that the organization would be run in a "businesslike" manner (which by definitition means slavish devotion to the bottom line), TP said he's willing to spend money on the team. The downside, Dan Snyder throws money at the Washington NFL franchise with the racist nickname, and ends up treating it like a fantasy league team. On the negative side, I haven't heard him say "how" he plans to win Stanley Cups. After all, beefing up the scouting staff doesn't mean squat if you hire lousy scouts. I'd like a few more thoughts about strategy and tactics. That said, I'm really looking forward to the next few seasons.
Calvin Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 PIM? how about two minutes for (non)interference then? there's still time, but i'd have liked to see some impact before the deadline.

IMO,if I had the chance to sit in the back and watch the game with my boyhood idols in the french connection I know what my decision would be. Watch the game in the back, hands down. It would have been cool to be a fly on the wall .
Stoner Posted February 28, 2011 Author Report Posted February 28, 2011 PIM? I did that in the subject line and caught it. I went off Diet Coke on Friday and I am really feeling it.

Which is where I'd hope that Sawyer having been in the league office for a long time will help out - he should have some good contacts that can corroborate the quality of the people Darcy & others are looking at. And I've actually been pretty happy w/ the higher draft picks since they've gone to 'video scouting.' So they seem to have reasonable scouts at a minimum. Not so sure about the lower picks; hopefully that's where the improved scouting department comes through. Getting back to PA's original Q. My expectation is that the +'s will significantly outweigh the -'s but it's too early to have any detailed +/-'s, so I'll stick to the following. Plus DeLuca isn't sold on him. If he was, I'd be worried. ;) I like what I've been hearing him say about his priorities in building from here. Minus While the guys he brought with him had a lot of success w/ the Pens, a substantial portion of that success was seriously bottoming out.

I've got no beef with your observation about the draft picks. My hope for the scouting department is that they'll be able to identify current NHL players who could help the Sabres via trades. Seems to me that the trade situation has been prettty unimpressive since the Briere and Drury deals.

The $187MM Q is: was that due to the people evaluating the talent; the people signing the checks; or somewhere in between?

nobody Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Minus While the guys he brought with him had a lot of success w/ the Pens, a substantial portion of that success was seriously bottoming out. If the team has to go through some periodic cycles of being really bad in order to restock to win another cup or two - I'm all for it.

It's easy to say that going through a horrible year (or 3) would be tolerated when the Sabres have only gone through 2 horrible seasons since the early '70's. 3 years in a row is what it took the Pens, plus not playing another year that they lucked into the Crosby pick; so essentially they had the drafts of 4 years worth of being horrible. I don't want to be anywhere near this place if the Sabres are true bottom feeders for 1/3 of a decade. It gets ugly enough with them going that long as mediocrities.
FogBat Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 I hear diet sodas can kill ya may want to consider staying off them I'm trying to get off pop altogether. They're not going to help me if I'm trying to lose 40-50 pounds.

X. Benedict Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 It's worth pointing out that the Sabres had the same shot at Crosby as the Pens. IIRC...the lockout draft was still weighted, and then they snaked it like a fantasy draft. So no.
Taro T Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 IIRC...the lockout draft was still weighted, and then they snaked it like a fantasy draft. So no. Actually, they did. They both had 3 balls (the Strangers were the other one w/ 3 IIRC). (EDIT: Columbus also had 3.) But it doesn't change the fact that the Pens had 4 years worth of lottery picks. (Also IIRC, the year before that string, they'd made a trade to get another lottery pick; so it was actually 5 years of top 5 selections.) I don't want to see the Sabres going on that sort of futility streak to be able to get good.
X. Benedict Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 It's worth pointing out that the Sabres had the same shot at Crosby as the Pens. Hanging from the oranges, it reads. Taro sez: PA Got it right.

Even though I know it's horrible for me, I can't bring myself to give up Diet Coke. I still have to have a can with lunch and a can with dinner every day. But I also drink about 75-100 oz. of water every day too so that helps. Good luck with your weight loss. I've lost 110 in the last 2.5 years so I know how difficult it can be.

I've lost 110 in the last 2.5 years so I know how difficult it can be. Started this method this week last year, lost 70-75. Coupled with buying a food scale and weighing almost everything I eat for portion size, it's been great. The bike a so much faster now. :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2gaQ0IoIfU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re5Wrbl89YA
