ParkMeadow Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 He's 20. Not to pick nits, but I believe he just turned 21! He is showing us why the old adage is still true, that it takes much longer for a defenseman to develop to an NHL level than it does a forward. He does often look like he is in serious need of coaching on some of the basics. He is trying to rely on raw talent too much, and the rest of the league is figuring out his tendencies. It began in the playoffs last year, when Boston constantly (and many times successfully) pressured him in the Sabres end to get him to cough up the puck. I think he'll be OK, as long as he gets (and stays open to) some decent teaching.

This is a joke right? Some ppl are responding as if your serious though
LGR4GM Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 3g, 3a, +2, 8pm, 1pp, 20sog in the last 30 days... Guess hes terrible... or is that this team needs to put some money into player development... hmmm idk seems alright to me and alot of ppl slump in their 2nd year.
ParkMeadow Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 This is a joke right? Some ppl are responding as if your serious though  Definitely too much negative hyperbole in the OP, but I answered it seriously because I do believe he has a ways to go before he can be considered an elite #1 D. If you watch him closely, there are several holes in his game that need closing - I strongly feel he will continue to improve, but the next year or two are critical in his development. That said, we have bigger needs to address right now than Tyler Myers' sophomore slump!

I mean come on....
dumb_dumb88 Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 Compare Myers to Chara. http://bruins.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8465009 Look at Chara's first 3 seasons with the Islander's. Myers is currently on pace to be a better defenseman overall. It's just nonsense to speak poorly on Myers, he's a kid on a learning curve and doing dam well I might add. He isn't going anywhere, the Sabres are fully aware he's a franchise defenseman in the making. Calder already, most likely a Norris candidate for years to come once he fully matures and sizes out. Myers will retire a Sabre most likely and rightfully so in my opinion. I give this kid an 18 year contract at 5.5 to 6 mil a year, he'll be 22 at the time of his next contract. That would cement him for his career in Buffalo. It is merely my opinion, but to not do so would be foolish given the potential this kid is going to hold once he's 25 years old and a seasoned, grizzled franchise d man veteran. He is going to be something very special on Buffalo's blueline.

You are making the huge assumptions that he will stay healthy, keep his heart in it nearly forever, and become the stud we all hope he will. That kind of contract is what made Milbury a joke of a GM! I say lock him up for a while with his next contract, but don't potentially handcuff the team for a generation in doing so!

The absurd length aside, thats what she said, Myers isn't eligible for UFA status for another 6 years I believe. Let's worry about it then. If he develops into what we think he can become, ten years $100 million, whatever it takes.

True, it is a role of the dice, I guess, but the odds are in the favor of my point of view given his play since his arrival in the league. Let's say, for example's sake, they give him a 4 year contract at 4 mil. (just an example) So, at 26 years old he is a UFA and ready for another contract, has performed superb in that time. He's going to cost you alot more than that 5.5 to 6 million I mentioned. Chances are in favor of the odds that he will cost anywhere from 7 to 9 mil a season based on his early performance in his career so far. That appears to be a very bad decision to lock him up only until his prime. But, as I said, it is true that injuries may play a role, but, based on his early career I see nothing to indicate it will be a problem. I have no reason to question the kids heart so to me that plays no factor as of now.

My belief is the lock him up for 8 years until he's 30. That's more in line with reality. I would atleast hope they consider doing so, I can't see much downside in having him on our blueline as of now. But good catch on the legnth, to both you and the previous person who responded, but I think you got the jist of what I was thinking here.
