Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted January 25, 2012 Author Report Posted January 25, 2012 maybe u can read all the private conversation I had with PA before u judge. Who's judging? All I know is look at the direction of this thread......how 8-10 posters work together in gathering and sorting out info......and how some of the concerns many had may be valid. How many times did PA have to dodge personal attacks yet still brought it? I think this may be the answer to my question about when this board fell apart. If I'm remembering correctly, this was right around when people started throwing around those ridiculously stupid "team storm cloud" and whatever the opposite side was (and I hate that I'm even typing that stupid name). Right then and there this board became a bunch of annoying cliques. It was like high school all over again. You can tell who the "not cool" kids are by all the minus signs. Those were really stupid to have
shrader Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 You can tell who the "not cool" kids are by all the minus signs. Ahhh yes, the pluses and minuses. Another thing that was ridicuously stupid. Why do they always turn into that online measurement contest (I'm going all family mode and not spelling out exactly what is being measured there).

Given the imperfect nature of humans and organizations - even Stanley Cup winners can be ripped apart on a daily basis if one had the energy and personality for it. My lasting memory of Mark, the 1st impression that comes to mind, is that he's the guy who took time out of his day to criticize our new owner for the row he chose to sit in while watching one of his 1st games as owner. Really? That takes a special kind of person to go there. Color me unimpressed that he sought out the flaws, both real and imaginary, in everything he saw in something he claimed to have loved.

It's much easier for me to KNOW something isn't going to work than to always find the answer TO make something work. Conflict comes when one side expects EVERYTHING to work. Just because. By the way...you just described 75% of fathers born from 1920-1940

I'm sad now. Anyway, nice thread necromancy. It features several people who don't post any more - mainly folks who wanted to keep the rose-colored glasses on, but quality posters none-the-less.

Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted January 25, 2012 Author Report Posted January 25, 2012 How sad the state of affairs when reading zombie threads is actually more interesting than the current ones. This is a new experience for me. I highly suggest it. I find stuff I say that I really screwed up. You learn from it. I actually said Pyatt and Bernier would retire with 300 goals each. Pyatt has a shot, but Bernier...Whoops! Nevermind....Pyatt needs a miracle as well

We need to start our own "no group wants us" clique. We could add more people to it but I don't think they'd want to join us. :P

korab rules Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 Shocker, but I'll be the contrarian. I don't miss him at all While he could be quite analytic and on point at times, over the last year he was here his posting devolved into a constant stream of miller and lindy hate, no matter the thread or topic, whether it pertained to the discussion or not. IMHO, the board has simply continued with the trend he started. I blame the current status of the board on poor performance, migration of posters from some other now defunct board, and the digital brains of those damn millennials.
Weave Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 I blame the current status of the board on ..., migration of posters from some other now defunct board, ..... But, but, there were only two or three of us.......

All he wanted to do at that point was rile people up, kind of like Drane (don't deny it Drane, you've admitted as much several times).
SDS Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 Yeah, something changed with him. He was great but then in that last year he became some sort of charicature. Mark also admitted many, many times that he relished the role of contrarian. In fact, I don't know how much of what he wrote was intended to piss people off or if he really believed it.
That Aud Smell Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 I think this may be the answer to my question about when this board fell apart. Right then and there this board became a bunch of annoying cliques. It was like high school all over again. not sure we ever branded the opposite side of the fence, but GoDD seems to have a terrific candidate below. 1) I put the call out for us miserable ones knowing full well the Candyland gang would want no part of hearing the grenade and pending carnage. I still stick by what I said for the most part. His lack of knowledge to his teams perception in the communtiy is disappointing. As he alluded to, it may have been a little soon for this type of questioning. I'm looking forward to his growth as a NHL team owner. OSP ran and hid from the spotlight once the tough got going, let's see what Pegs does when the heat gets turned up. did you and PA share the same crystal ball? My lasting memory of Mark, the 1st impression that comes to mind, is that he's the guy who took time out of his day to criticize our new owner for the row he chose to sit in while watching one of his 1st games as owner. Really? That takes a special kind of person to go there. Color me unimpressed that he sought out the flaws, both real and imaginary, in everything he saw in something he claimed to have loved. that cuts deep right there. and, sadly, i think it's more true than not. perhaps much more so.
Ghost of Dwight Drane Posted January 25, 2012 Author Report Posted January 25, 2012 Mark also admitted many, many times that he relished the role of contrarian. In fact, I don't know how much of what he wrote was intended to piss people off or if he really believed it. I will speak for myself. I believe what I post. My delivery at times may be to stir reaction....but the meat of my subject matter is what I believe. Sometimes I put out theories that I don't know are true, but by doing so I hope that critical thinkers....which PA was one of the best....will look into it as well. When you have a thinktank riffing off each other, good things will come of it many times. When you think outside of the box, a lot of people aren't able to process information that way. Of those who can't or even some of those who can but see no merit, some will ignore it, some will find it interesting, some will see merit to it and look further, and some will attempt to ridicule or discredit. I think being on a "fan board" and not believing in the team you are a fan of, opens oneself up for many insults. When sharp posters bring relevant information to debate a point...that is the goal. Far too many times however sharp posters head to personal attack or ridicule. I for one don't mind it from the average bear, but when people that I know have a good head on their shoulders take it over the top, the defense mechanism is to defend oneself. THAT is the "characture" I believe you saw in PA, or in me. If we are going to get railed for bringing honest opinion that many don't agree with.....might as well entertain ourselves in the process. Now that the team is so far off the cliff, and in the past when things are going poor, there isn't as much tension with posters that are "negative" because the majority see many truths in what those posters say. In the same regard, not as much mud is slung, and it keeps someone like myself calm because I don't feel the need to get bristled and go on counter-attack. The problem many times is that certain people hold "their team" so dear, that any critical opinions is viewed as "an attack" on them.....Pegula being A#1 example of this. This leads them to raise hostilities towards critical posters and puts "us" on the defensive. I've been here since 2005-06. I was positive that year. The problem is the Sabres have been a constant since 2007. The same basic players, GM, coach, "passive" play.......and it is frustrating for someone that doesn't believe in the structure in place. Guys like PA haven't had a chance to see anything different TO be positive about. How is that his fault. Look at my posts about the football team. I think the Bills have figured it out and are on the right path. I love Gailey and Nix's honesty and common sense attitude. They aren't smug and they have the ability to be solid to good. The positive synergy they are trying to build with their players are just the opposite of the negative synergy I have seen with the Sabres. Sure....Ralph has them under constraints, just like Golisano did here....but I trust those guys and the core of the Bills team right now. I believe they GET IT. I am positive about them. I wasn't when they employed Donahoe, Mularkey, Modrak.....but they get it now and I appreciate their style. I've come and gone here. Mainly because the tension reaches a point where nothing I say will be heard....just ridiculed. I do believe I was minused 400 times in a 48 hour period. PA just has much better resolve than I do. I like it here because people talk sports and I love it. I also have invested so much time here that I have a good feel for 100+ posters. It's a cyber dysfunctional family.....but I wouldn't go anywhere else at this point. PA isn't always a saint....but I wish people could see where he is coming from. I don't know if I relayed that point very well, but he was great and is missed. I look at this board like the '85 Oilers. Tons of good posters in the dozens. There is no harm in being called Paul Coffey or Glen Anderson or Kevin Lowe. But PA was the Messier here in my opinion. When he's not around, a lot of grit and soul is MIA.

I beg to differ. I'd liken him more to Glenn Anderson -- a bit of an oddball, didn't care what anyone thought, liked to throw the occasional grenade, and capable of sublime moments now and then. Certainly a very valuable member, but not a captain.
drnkirishone Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 I don't miss him one bit. I said it before about him and I will say it again. Noone wants to listen to someone be negative about anything and everything all the time. Also his need to turn every discussion he joined into his Lindy and/or Miller hate agenda was just annoying. I beleive I even compared his routine to that of the mother on 2 and a half men being able to make anything a negative I am all for pointing out flaws and negative things that someone might see or think. but the 100th and 1000th time I hear that same person say the same thing......... Maybe his behavior over the last year he was here has clouded my memory of his posts. But I simply remember his posts being like a kid trying to crap on everything

nfreeman Posted January 26, 2012 Report Posted January 26, 2012 If I'm going to consider anyone for the Messier role, it's X. X is #99, IMHO. He sees the game differently than the rest of us mortals. GoDD -- Fuhr. He can step out to Mars from time to time but what an athlete. And even with the quirks, he makes sure the sacred vault is protected while everyone is having their prom night party in the offensive zone. Keep your daughters at a safe distance though. Ink -- Coffey. Nobody since Orr brings it from the back end with that kind of speed and panache. Verve, even. Chz -- Semenko. Hairy and scary. Keeps everyone safe. Aud Smell -- Kurri. Speed and grace. Keeps it classy, but also likes to party. 11 -- Lowe. Solid as an effing rock. Will clean up your mess and will pick you up when your car breaks down at 2:00 AM in a snowstorm. I don't have a good one for Messier.

As for Mess ... how bout me? :flirt: Actually , who on this board will take it upon themselves to pick up the team and lead them to victory ... Well, IMHO it has to be SDS. EDIT: WHY YES ... MY NOSE IS INDEED BROWN.
