Yesterday this seemed like a shock at first then a none story because everyone, inluding their mothers said this means nothing, as he won't get claimed, won't get send down, won't get "C" stripped... but, this could become a big story for today because Mike Brophy just said he believes ATLEAST 2 teams have put a claim on Rivet. Possibly the NYR.

That would be huge cap relief and open the C up.

The Sabres don't need cap relief today, or for the rest of the season unless they are bringing in a bunch of rentals(which DR already said he is not doing).

As of today they have over 4+ mil in cap space. Why would they need 3+ mil more?

That's true. It's early still and i didn't fully think that post through.... but it'd be a bit shocking news if he was claimed though.

IF they picked up Stasny at the deadline they'd need the space.

Just sayin'...

Wow. If there are playoff teams out there that need Rivet down the stretch -- then the Sabres' chances of making the playoffs and advancing look a bit better.

Not necessarily rentals -- they could trade for some expensive guys (like Stastny, as long as we're hypothesizing) and need the cap space both for this season and beyond.

11:15 AM is early?

Rise and shine, young man. We need you fully alert for the playoff drive.

They have enough now. Stasny would cost the Sabres less than 2 mil for the rest of the year.

My rough run at the numbers says they have enough space to add on players with the equivalent of a year's cap hit of somewhere between $5-6 million. That doesn't take into account Rivet coming off the books or the relief they can get from Roy's injury. So yeah, they should have enough room for him, but it's not as simple as saying he only has around $2 million on his contract this year.

If Stastny was coming this way, there would be also be some cap relief in terms of who is going back. The Avs wouldn't be asking for picks and minor/junior prospects.

PS I'd be willing to give up Vanek in a trade for Stastny and throw in more if needed

Bucky reports in his chat that Rivet is on the ice for practice.

He's still a Sabre until at least noon anyway. I'm not so sure there's anything to read into that one.

Wow, if you love conspiracies, and I do, Vanek gets a letter put on him last night and Ruff uncharacteristically talks up how much of a leader Vanek is becoming, great two-way player etc. Gah-damn.

Getting the A is a step in him getting the C.

Are you sure? If the Sabres have $4.3 left of cap space. They acquire a player with $2 mil left this year, that would leave the Sabres with $2.3 in cap room barring any other roster movement.

If my perusal of capgeek is accurate, Buffalo has the prorated portion of $4.3M left under the cap. Stasny had a cap hit of $6.6M this season, so we'd have to fit the prorated portion of $6.6M, right? So we'd need to make space. AmIright? Or am I missing something?

If we release Rivet, thats 3.5 more cap space.

Which tallies to about 7.8...then whoever we trade for him (if true that is...)

Didn't we discuss this yesterday? According to capgeek, they can take on the equivalent of 17 million in full year cap hits.

Their current roster projects to $4.3 million in cap space at the end of the year. Which, according to capgeek.com, equates to the prorated portion of roughly $17.8 million in contracts for this year left under the cap.

Also, according to capgeek.com, Stastny's cap hit for the remainder of the season is roughly $1.6 million, assuming no contracts going the other way this would leave the Sabres with $2.7 million in cap space.
