Eyesonmedia Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 There's a really interesting sideplot to the postgame flap that nobody wants to touch — Miller is obviously upset about giving up so many goals and has been in something of a funk all season, but the more interesting thing is Vogl's cowering, despite having the most access (and what should be the greatest connection) to the team. The flap between he and the Twitter folks was fun, but can we finally stop heaping praises on a guy who hasn't formed good connections within the team he covers on a daily basis or the community which he covers them for? Vogl is very, very average, certainly no Tim Graham, and doesn't hold a candle to many of the league's other beat writers. He backed his way into the position because the News' stable of writers ready to pounce on a major league beat at the time of Graham's departure included Amy Moritz, Keith McShea, Budd Bailey and Fletcher something-or-other. Hardly a ringing endorsement. So Vogl wanted to ask how Miller felt. Do so. Don't cower when he responds and get snippy with the answer. "Hey Ryan, looked like you were just off. Any physical things bothering you?" Not ... "ummm ... I was ummm ... well, I just thought that ... umm ... sometimes it's hard for me to get my pen working and ummm ..." Ask the question, big boy. You've got the pulpit everyone else has asked for. Step up, with a little authority, and ask. It's obvious there's little respect for Vogl, who even started trashtalking with his own cohorts by writing the whole Twitter/feces thing. I work as a salesman for a product that's in need of modernization. Should I improve my skills and become better equipped to help customers, or should I put down the people who don't want my product? That will get them to take me more seriously. I'm not trying to defend Ryan Miller. He gets upset when he loses. But do you think Bill Belichick would smile and answer Vogl's mamby-pamby questions with a robust "thanks for asking!" Not in a million years.
LabattBlue Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Boo Hoo...some nasty member of the media made one of the players get upset. Miller needs to go play in a major market. Then he will see how good he had it here, in terms of the media covering the team. As an alternative, Miller can go hide out like some of the other players on the team do while the reporters are in the room(as has been reported in the past).
dumb_dumb88 Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Funny, I didn't see a Vanek post game interview. Pommers, Stafford, Ennis, Leopold and Miller. No, Vanek, Connolly, Myers, Sekera or even Regier for that matter. I just find it interesting who they get to interview and who they don't.

thesportsbuff Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 The whole thing, though vastly entertaining, is basically a non-issue to me. I can see both sides of it. Clearly Miller was pissed (and as some other posters pointed out that's a good thing, he should be) and he didn't really handle himself that well in the interview. But at the same time the dude asked a question, Miller said he felt fine, so just leave it at that. Instead the reporters keep asking the same question and wanting to expand on it, and Miller was getting more and more frustrated. Things escalated and it is what it is. I don't like people pestering me when I'm pissed off either and if someone raises their voice at me, I'll raise my voice back.. it's just an argument. Not a big deal.

Hey I can understand that Miller was pissed but sorry your an athlete and this is your job. Face it Miller was ###### last night against a teams 4th or 5th goalie. Plus being a home game they can't afford to lose to the New York Islanders of all teams. I'm sure Vogl was thinking like most of us that we can't lose to the New York Islanders in the middle of a close playoff race so suck it up Miller and step up your game.

Miller was awful (tho I will point out that the Islanders having a 4th/5th string goalie in has absolutely no bearing on how Miller played). And I'm pissed too, they shouldn't lose to the Islanders. But when all is said and done, that's all there was to this post game fiasco. Miller was pissed, he's allowed to be. The reporters were grilling him over a stupid question. So they got into a little back-and-forth, big deal? That's all I'm saying.

Two or less Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Funny, I didn't see a Vanek post game interview. Pommers, Stafford, Ennis, Leopold and Miller. No, Vanek, Connolly, Myers, Sekera or even Regier for that matter. I just find it interesting who they get to interview and who they don't. Who cares? That's irrelevant. The STORY on Sunday was our $6 million goalie, former veizna winner, Miller allowing 7 goals to a terrible team.
LastPommerFan Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Vogl was simply and unfortunately the next guy Miller saw after playing the worst game of his career. Thank god it wasn't a nun or a cancer patient. Vogl's only mistake was not being assertive. Sullivan could see this and tried to help him out, but only ended up makeing things worse. Once it got to the point that Jerry and Ryan were hurling insults at eachother, the "reporting" ceases and it's just an argument in a bar. That said, Miller needs to figure it out. My theory is that the crappy start to the season got into his over-analytical brain, and while the rest of the team seems to have gotten over it, Miller is still second guessing himself in mid-game. Even the "nagging injuries" are more of an excuse than anything else. It's sounds a lot like Hasek's dark side. Turnovers are the Sabres Enemy #1, miller's head might be #2 right now.

craze Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 I think the team really needed to figure out a plan to play the backup goalie over the last, oh, five seasons or so. You can't rely on Miller to be sharp if you just keep running him out there every game. If Lalime is that terrible then you have to cut him and take the cap hit because he is absolutely useless right now. He has not provided a win in almost a year! But you can't blame him entirely. How can your backup get any kind of rhythym if he is playing once every two months? Let's get somebody up from Portland to give it a try. The Islanders are the PERFECT team to play your backup against. A big missed opportunity. In the Sabres best year (and I think the first year out of the lockout was a better team than the President's trophy team), Miller was injured and Lindy was forced to play Biron. Then we had a rested and excellent Miller for the stretch run.
LastPommerFan Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 And amid all that, The Sabres are 12-4-2. Hey, Miller carried the team last year. It's nice to see the team carry Miller. If they both get it goin' we might actually do something in the playoffs. If we keep ticking along with a Top 5 offense (like we have for the past 2 months) and Miller gets his GAA down to a solid 2.50, we're contenders. Defense plays a role, but for the past 15 years the Sabres have paid goalies to make up for defensively poor teams.
PotentPowerPlay22 Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 It wasn't Vogl's fault the Sabres lost! The focus should be on the team and the players. They get paid a lot of money and I would hardly say they are being "abused" by reporters. Some players need to grow up and take personal responsibility for their own behavior.

Since Thursday night: Sabres: 2 games played, 3 points Canes: 3 games played, 3 points Thrashers: 3 games played, 1 point We still made up a game in hand on Carolina and a game and two points on Atlanta. Was I as pissed as everyone about the loss? Sure. But Miller and everyone better get over this fast because we've got a lot of games in a few nights comming up.

UncleWally Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Did anyone hear Eldrick spit on the course a few times yesterday, and is getting fined for doing so?? lol....I hate that selfish little prick.
spndnchz Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 He had a bad game, he knew it. Sully got him going after Miller said that Vogl writes his stories in the second period. Sully says "I'm sorry I wasn't here to talk to you after any of the other 14 games this season which you allowed four or more goals." Sully or Vogl expected Miller to be jovial after that? I too would tell 'em to f-off. Vogl wants to write a story about how much Ryan's played, how he's tired, and is looking for sound bites from Miller. Miller wasn't playing his game. Besides, Enroth just got called up. Will meet the team in Montreal.

Yeah, I don't know where the OP's "overrated" comment comes from. "Cowardly" is pretty strong. I do think John is very passive about how he covers the team. He does have trouble speaking up and asking good, assertive questions. (OTOH, Paul Hamilton has never asked a question in 36 years of covering the team.) I've made my opinion known about Vogl. I don't find much useful about his reporting. However, I give him credit for asking this question, even if it was weakly asked. (BTW, what's wrong with asking, point blank, are you injured, are you tired mentally, are you tired physically). Because John asked the question, I got a lot of useful information from Miller's response. It spoke volumes. So good for you John. Keep it up. I do get this vibe, like it's junior high and the principal has been sick and just announced he's not coming back next year. The student paper is getting a little frisky.

What do you think.."I'm a dangerous assassin....I'm a mad killer on the loose."-- Cary Grant (North by Northwest)
