Trades you'd like to see the Sabres make

Because Miller is a pretty good goalie, he's not that expensive, and he's a superstar (IMO there are only three in the league and we have one of them). One way to make sure that you never get another star player to come to Buffalo ever again is by trading away every star player you have ever had. Haven't we don't that enough?

He's a star in the league but I would hesitate to call him a "superstar" and don;t think he worth $6 mil.

Buffalo is not a destination for star players. Who is the last "star player" to sign with the Sabres as a free-agent? Spacek?

The way you get star players to come to Buffalo is to give them a real chance to win a Cup. Players get traded; that's a reality of life a professional athlete. Trading Miller in the context of making the Sabres a contender will not deter star players from coming to Buffalo.

Now -- you are not asserting Miller is one of three superstars in the league, I hope. 1. Crosby 2. Ovechkin 3. Miller ???

How is a "pretty good goalie" a superstar?

I understand that 92.3% of all Sabre fans will reflexively oppose trading Miller. But can we at least be logical and think about this?

Buffalo fans just can't see the forest because of the trees, I guess. Miller is absolutely one of the three superstars in this league. Of the three in your list, which one was on the Today show after the Olympics? When is the last time you ever saw a hockey player on the Today show?

Miller had one superstar year. The rest of his seasons have been top 10, maybe, maybe top 5 for goalies, but he's only had one superstar year. And he followed it up by going right back to his career average. He's a star. He's not a superstar.

But to play devil's advocate, even if he is a superstar, why does that preclude trading him? A deal involving Miller that sees a #1 C, an OK starter G, and a #1 pick coming back is probably a good deal for Buffalo. At worst a it's a wash anyway.

Granted, I don't see that type of deal happening. Trades involving #1 centers are as rare as trades involving top 5 goalie talent. And trades involving #1 centers AND top 5 goalies just don't happen at all. It certainly makes for interesting interweb discussion tho.

Miller was on the Today show because he was the most compelling story about the AMERICAN team and he is a marketing dream, not because he is one of the top 3 players in the league.

I didn't say he was one of the top three players in the league. I said he was one of the three superstars in the league. There is a difference.

Then I guess we'll need your definition of a superstar cuz I'm betting mine is different than yours.

But he didn't say he was one of the top 3 players in the league--he said he's one of the top 3 superstars, and he's at least close to being right. There are plenty of players in every sport whose playing abilities do not approach their "superstar" statuses.

Well if that is approaching his def of a superstar I'm thinking Miller's stauts as a superstar is null this season. He's not getting any media atttention anymore. Certainly not at the level that Crosby et al gets.

I think Montador is our best trade bait right now. He's arguably our best defenseman, he's cheap right now, and Darcy isn't attached to him like he is to his draft picks. There are also rumors of teams being actively interested in him, which, if it's true, means that he could bring excellent value in return. We also have Butler and Rivet in reserve, which of course is a major downgrade, but that's part of the whole trade business.

I would like to see Connolly and Montador packaged for a real-deal centerman. I don't have time to comb NHL rosters and payrolls to theorize on who this guy might be, but I could see a team that really wants Montador be willing to insert Connolly for the remainder of the season as a substitute for the guy they ship to Buffalo.

I have to believe there's a team out there that badly needs an anchor on D and also has a good enough stable of centers to swap their #1 guy for Connolly.

Stars are players that people who follow hockey know their name even though they are not on their team. Superstars are players that people who don't even follow hockey know their name.

At the last Devils/Sabres game I went to in NJ, as we were heading toward the escalator to leave, we were merging with an entire family dressed to the gills in Devils regalia, except for their 10 year old son. He was dressed from head to toe in Sabres and Miller gear. I asked the dad how does that happen and he said that he's just always been a huge Ryan Miller fan.

Do you really think we would have gotten the first Winter Classic if the NHL couldn't have marketed it as Sidney Crosby and the Penguins vs Ryan Miller and the Sabres?

I honestly haven't minded Butler the past few games he's been filling in for Monty.

Well, there was an organizational bias against pursuing the top-tier FAs under prior ownership. TP may feel differently. We'll find out this summer.

But it all depends on what's coming back, innit? There are very few here, I'd guess, who would oppose trading Miller in a deal for Crosby or Stamkos or Sedin or Zetterberg. The question is how do you feel about unloading Miller without getting a real star top-line forward in return. I think most here would oppose unloading Miller as part of a teardown.

IMHO, the kind of player I'd want in return for Miller is not going to be available in trade, so it's a pointless discussion. But if someone like that does pop up, by all means, let's consider it seriously. BTW I would not include Spezza in the group of players for whom I would trade Miller.

Exactly. I wouldn't want draft picks for him; I would want seriously talented players in return. This is not a Hasek-forced situation where the Sabres are going to give the Red Wings their missing piece of the puzzle in return for a castoff.

I don't think Monty is the Sabres' best defenseman or even close, but I agree that he is attractive trade bait.

I also don't think any team that is interested in picking up Monty for a playoff run would be interested in subtracting their #1 center from said playoff run.

Agree! BTW, I can't think of ANY team that has a "stable of centers". Nearly EVERY team needs/wants additional centers. You can't have too many - just ask the Pens or Bruins. Much easier to find a 3/4 D-man, like Montador, than a #1 or even #2 center.

I still can't believe that people are saying Kovy couldn't help this team. Right now, I wouldn't be surprised if the Devils climb all the way back and steal that coveted eighth spot from the Sabres.

That would be an epic comeback. I don't see that happening. They're selling IMO.

I think it's closer to 92.6%

Selling? Playoff Tickets? ;)

I never trusted fan base polls, I would like to poll Ruff, Regier, Quinn and Golisano with the Trade Ryan Miller question. Lalime would be the deciding vote.

Yes, I do. I think Buffalo got the Winter Classic because they had the available football stadium and the proximity to Canada to guarantee it would be filled to the brim.

Gonna agree with you on this.

we had all hoped that Grier & Nieds would be impact point-scoring leadership like Bertuzzi or Recchi have been. IMO those types of players are crucial for playoff success, now and in the future
