Stoner Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 OK, great win, nice shot, whatever. Here's where the real show was: what in the name of Irv, Rick and Tom was going on behind the net after Myers scored? A Sabre fan in a 26 sweater jumped up and pulled said sweater up to reveal his pasty, clammy, blanched, fatty, hairy, sweaty, large-nippled front of his back -- and there might have been several suspicious moles. A security guard (at least he had a black vest on, some kind of badge and black gloves) was sitting several rows behind him when the goal was scored and got up and came down after the goal and appeared to be pawing at the man, even after he put his clothes back on. I watched it over and over, trying to decipher this scene. Finally, at 2:30 a.m., I was done. Anyone else catch this? Also, Harry said Myers' shot came from 20 feet out!
Overeducated Homer Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Yep! This Sunday is the "true" .500 hump, with Tuesday being the over .500 hump, and Wednesday likely being the 8th seed hump. A successful team does a lot of humping.
Marvelo Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 That's 30 straight starts for Miller. Hope Pegs acknowledges reality and makes a push for a new backup. Everyone on this planet knows that Lalime is useless, except when he's waving the pom-poms.
shrader Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Last night's game was a perfect example of why the NHL needs to go to 4-on-4 full time. A 3 period yawn fest followed up by 5 minutes of pure entertainment.
X. Benedict Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 6. Pretty solid game by Myers, who led in ice time with over 25 minutes. Weber also had a very solid game on D. I never thought I'd say this, but Weber has looked very good skating. It looks like he's lengthened his stide and his hips are in the game. The NHL vision has come along too. He always had that Nolan Pratt type of simplicity which was effective, but he's moving the puck well and really starting to snap nice outlets catching the forwards in stride. His play has jumped a level.

Won't some of dreadful coaches in this league just find a way to clog it up and slow it down again?

I think it would be enough to go back the 4 on 4 for offsetting minor penaltiees Michel Bergeron, coach of the Nordiques, would try to draw offsetting roughing calls as a strategy to get Michel Goulet, and Peter, Marion, and Anton Stasney all on the ice at the same time 4x4. That used to be electrifying.

He always had that Nolan Pratt type of simplicity which was effective, but he's moving the puck well and really starting to snap nice outlets catching the forwards in stride. His play has jumped a level. Good call. He's improved all around and is delivering much more than just the physical play we expect from him. The physical play is very strong too -- there was one play last night in which a Panther had the puck behind the Sabres' net and tried to loop around in front and Weber just took the body perfectly and broke up the play. That used to be electrifying. I wouldn't go 4-on-4 full time, but I definitely would go back to it for offsetting minors AND I would go to it for playoff OT after the 1st OT (i.e. 1st OT period is 5-on-5, then all subsequent OTs are 4-on-4). ...and giving Miller a reach around. :o You can't upset the fragile psyche of Miller by parting ways with Lalime. Miller needs to GTF over it next year because a real backup is needed. I still don't understand why the Sabres didn't bring back Marty last summer.

That used to be electrifying. What about play going to four on four after the first whistle inside of five minutes in all periods? Is it my imagination or are there very few penalties four on four? Refs swallowing the whistle, or are teams just careful about avoiding that deadly four on three kill? It seems like that avoidance of penalties -- if it's not whistle-swallowing -- would naturally lead to more wide open play in and of itself. You know the NHLPA isn't going to like any of this.
shrader Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 I've yearned for that myself. But 1. Can that pace be kept up for 60 minutes? 2. Won't some of dreadful coaches in this league just find a way to clog it up and slow it down again? I know it will never happen, but it will always be my dream for the game. At this point, it probably is the only way to counter the increased player size and all the clogging you mentioned. The coaches would definitely work on new ideas, but in the end, there would probably be far too much space for that to be consistently successful (unless this obesity epidemic is taken to a whole new level). You bring up a great point about whether or not they could maintain that pace for 60 minutes. It obviously wouldn't be that fast the whole way, but I think it would be far better. The bench gets shortened quite a bit in OT, so if they mix in a few more guys, they can keep the pace up for a longer time. I would absolutely love to see some league at some level experiment with this idea. Maybe do it in one of those world championship tournaments. I realize that it will never be a serious option for the NHL thanks to the NHLPA, but I want to see it somewhere. Of course, today's NHL doesn't actually call penalties anymore, so there goes that idea.
korab rules Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 yeah he won the calder, but the guy is still going to have some growing pains before he establishes himself firmly as an elite #1 d-man. interesting thought. while myers capably carries the play from the back-end and is willing to pinch, i think that those are things that very good/great/elite d-men do -- i don't think that such play suggests that the player longs to be a forward. i think that it would be a mistake to do anything with myers other than nurture his development into an elite #1 d-man -- a rock of the franchise. Myers would struggle as a forward due to limited space. He does great in the open ice because he has plenty of room to operate, and with his large frame and long wingspan he can shield the puck with his body as he moves up ice. But in the congested space of the offensive zone, especially in the corners, his reach will become a problem. Because of his height and stick length he needs a huge amount of space to operate - he won't be given that space - its one thing to ward off forwards like he does as a defensman. Its another thing to ward off what are often bigger and stronger defensmen. More than anything, though, the space he would require to operate just isn't available in the offensive zone. He needs to concentrate on playing defense at a consistently high level in the NHL. On a different note, after seeing Myers in the post game interview, he has certainly packed some muscle on his chest, and his neck looks like it is twice the size of what it was last year, but he still has a ton of room to add bulk in his shoulders, and his arms are still pipe cleaners. He could easily add another 20 lbs of muscle. We are already seeing improvement in his physical game this year. I can't wait to see what this kid develops into - he could end up an absolute monster.

As a troll who hates the Sabres and wants them to lose, I tend to watch moments like that 20 or 30 times. My eye always roves into the crowd to see reactions. How were you not blinded by the white?

I don't think I saw you post anything about how the crowd at the Florida game cheering for the Sabres was louder then at games in Buffalo. ;)
