deluca67 Posted February 13, 2011 Report Posted February 13, 2011 Gees, just pay him to lock him up for five or six years Like they did with Pominville?
Kristian Posted February 13, 2011 Report Posted February 13, 2011 If Stafford scores 35 this year, he'll easily be offered 4.5 from somewhere. Sounds crazy I know, but look at some of the salaries out there already - 4.5 for a 35 goal guy would be a steal. Not sure I want him resigned still though. Never underestimate the power of a contract year,
spndnchz Posted February 13, 2011 Report Posted February 13, 2011 From Edmonton: That's where the mirror comes in. He gave himself a talking to. Maybe his dad offered a few words, too. "I made a concerted effort to get in better condition over the summer (working out with Zach Parise, among others). I would be skating around at 225 pounds and feel I was losing a step. I've lost about 10 pounds. I worked on quickness, not so much on strength," he said. "I also knew I had to shoot more." http://www.edmontonjournal.com/sports/hockey/edmonton-oilers/Stafford+stunning+Sabres/4273643/story.html
dumb_dumb88 Posted February 13, 2011 Report Posted February 13, 2011 Don't sign him now. The smart move is to let some one offer sheet him. It affords the Sabres choices. I'm sure someone here know's where to get the offer sheet compensation information. Let's take a look at the options we may have here.

No need to do anything right now unless the Sabres get blown away by a trade offer.

He has arbitration rights this year, so Sabres have to sign him, or he arbitrates and an arbitrator will decide his numbers. Then it is match, or walk away. - Match and overpay - walk away and you get nothing for your asset. Nada.(Like Dumont) (of course Trade is an option) BTW - I would trade Drew Stafford for any three of Florida's prospects: Howden, Bjugstad, Shore, McFarland. But I don't think they would make that deal.

bunomatic Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 I realize that Regier has screwed up on a couple of players signing them long term to high contracts when he shouldn't have but hopefully he's not calling the shots on Stafford. What we seem to do in Buffalo more often than I would like is develop a player till they reach their potential then lose them. This kid has finally gotten it. Personally I don't think this is contract year charm that we're witnessing. I think its maturity. Other G.M.'s in this league are drooling at the thought of prying this guy out of Buffalo. I'm hoping we don't give up on him now.
ROC Sabres Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 I really think there are two things that are making Stafford have the year he is. 1) He is finding open ice and the puck much better. He keeps putting himself in a position to score. I get the feeling that when he was playing with Vanek and Roy he probably thought he was one of the no named guys that would beam down to a planet with Spock and Kirk (we all know what happened to that guy). 2) Not only is he finding the puck and open ice but Ennis has found him for pretty much all of his goals lately. I know he says he is shooting more but his last two hat-tricks I think he had 3 goals on 3 shots. He's only averaging one more shot per game(3) when the past two years he's averaged around 2.3. I really just think he finally has confidence in himself to take a shot that he knows he can put in. Any which way you slice it, I think the kid has finally got it and they better sign him up for at least 4 years when the seasons over. EDIT: Also just looked and noticed he has a 20.9% shooting percentage. As Dickie Clark would say "THAT'S NUCKIN' FUTS!"
nfreeman Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 I need to see him deliver in crunch time against good teams before I can recommend a big extension to DR and TP. Let's see how he does against the Habs tomorrow night.
LabattBlue Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Don't sign him now. The smart move is to let some one offer sheet him. It affords the Sabres choices. Yeah...that worked out so well in the case of Vanek. <_<
JujuFish Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 With his 4th hat trick, Stafford joins Jonathan Cheechoo, Vanek, and Eric Staal as the only people to do that in a single season since the lockout.

MattPie Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Cheechwho ? Worcester Sharks' top skater.
nfreeman Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Don't sign him now. The smart move is to let some one offer sheet him. It affords the Sabres choices. Yeah...that worked out so well in the case of Vanek. <_< It really depends on how he does over the rest of the year. If he scores in bunches against teams that don't play defense but is invisible against the stronger teams and/or in the playoffs, I won't mind too much if someone offer-sheets him and the Sabres walk away with a couple of high draft picks. If, however, he continues to pour it on, he brings it every night, he contributes big goals at key times against good teams, and the Sabres make the playoffs and he plays well, I would expect the Sabres to try to sign him to a 3-year or even a 4-year extension before July 1 (which is the first day another team can offer-sheet him). Would that be a somewhat risky move by the Sabres? Yes, but less so than Vanek's contract was. BTW, I think the likelihood of someone offer-sheeting him is pretty low -- it seems like it only happens league-wide about once per offseason.
NNYSABRESMAN Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 This is not a bad situation for the Sabre's to be In. With stafford scoring goals in bunches it is sure to get attention around the league. If he keeps it up; with a smart GM in place after TP takes over we should have some attractive trade options available via a package with yonger players or prospects. Or if he scores 35 goals plus with a repectable amount of assists. Then I think you have to look at resigning him this summer but not for more than 3 years at 2.8 to 3.4 mil per year. He still needs to prove that he has arrived in my book. Just please let it be anybody but Darcy Handeling negotiations.
spndnchz Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Stafford named the NHL's Second Star of the Week. Should b good 4 another 100k.
gregkash Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 He's looking at 30-40 goals this year. If you can get him at 3-4 mil now, I say take that chance.

Never underestimate the power of a contract year, And let a 25-35 goal per year home grown power forward who has intimate knowledge of the inner workings of lindy's system walk out the door? Not to mention this team doesnt exactly have an abundance of size upfront... Guys like staff dont grow on trees you know. And this isnt technically a contract year, his contract expires sometime next season so we still have time to evaluate his performance through the end of this season and for a sample of next season.

Ummmm, what? Are you suggesting that a contract ends in the middle of the season because that would be a first in the post-lockout NHL.

nfreeman Posted February 14, 2011 Report Posted February 14, 2011 Boston. Yes, he had a hattie in an early season game against a good defensive team that was beating the Sabres (who were 12 points or so out of the playoffs at the time) by 4 goals and went to sleep. Not exactly a crunch-time performance, IMHO. Are you sold on him? Also, it has to be said that if you're relying on "Boston" as proof that he's arrived, it wasn't that long ago that he was healthy-scratched in the playoffs against Boston.

I'm not sure he was healthy then. I think he had a cracked mellon and was still suffering from the effects of that.
