Sabres Create their own Fate

LET"S GO BUFFALO

This week was very good to Buffalo, Carolina, Atlanta, NYR, and Florida all had key loss(es) giving the Sabres a rare opportunity to make a play off push. Currently with 5 games on both NYR and Atlanta the next 5 games are the season...If the sabres can go 5 for 5 we will be sitting just one point behind the Rangers for the 7th spot...playoffs don't look like such a stretch when only 3 out 5 wins gets us in....LET's Go BUFFALO

Did you forget that the Rangers play 4 games over that same period of time? Even if the Sabres win all 5 of the games you mention, the Rangers would have to lose all 4 for your scenario to become reality. ;)

To be fair, it's 3.5 tough games (Detroit, Montreal, Pittsburgh). IDK if Atlanta counts but their current slump has to end sometime..

It really doesn't matter what the rangers do because the Sabres need to win, we have 5 games in hand meaning even if the rangers win all of their games it still pushes us closer by winning the 5 games, tonight against Pittsburgh is a huge game that we need to win to gain momentum for Toronto on home ice. If we win tonight it will be another 2 at home for us tomorrow night no question...Big players of the game tonight...Byron..this guy is fast, works hard, and is just the shot of life this team needs...plus I love a player looking to make his case in the NHL they work so much harder then the Veterans who think they deserve to be there..

Every Sabre player should play like their job depends on it from now until season's end; in fact, this is very likely true. If cut loose by the team, there are a number of current Sabres who would have a tough time signing with another NHL team and could wind up like Kotalik down in the AHL next year. There ought to be more than a token effort from every player in every game down the stretch. Let's hope that translates to wins, points and a playoff spot. Now we'll see who has it and who doesn't.... C'mon, boys - let's turn it up to 11!

Come on Blue, let the kids have their fun. It's every child's dream to see their team finish in 8th place.

And of course, pissing away 2-0 leads like last night doesn't make it more interesting to watch either.

Doesn't matter what place they finish as long as they're in.

If you're goal is just to get in, yes.

In the NHL, very few teams historically have won the Cup from a low seed.

Posted

PA, that's an excellent point. You're right.

If they make it in, they shouldn't think they could win. Hell, they shouldn't even try to win. They might as well stop trying to make the playoffs, because that endeavour's pointless if you can't win the Cup. They should sandbag to get high draft picks every year until they have a team that that will predictably and undoubtedly win the Cup, and only go to the playoffs if they're a high seed.

But IKP, you say, it's statistically difficult to guarantee that a particular team is going to win the Stanley Cup. How will we know which year to try to get into the playoffs?

You're right again! I guess we're SOL. Remember, the true definition of competition is to actually win, not the act of striving to win. So if the Sabres don't win every game all the time, you're not actually watching sports.

Great.

My retort was to a fan who seems to be happy with the idea of "just making the playoffs," because once you're in, "anything can happen." Fans shouldn't be happy with eighth place. And anything can't happen in the NHL playoffs from the 8 seed, at least not if anything is defined as winning it all.

Pegula will bury fans like you, thank God.

Yet some people point to Philadelphia as an example of what the Sabres should be. Where did they end up last year?

I want to apologize for this remark. A bit over the top. I'll leave it up as testament to my aholedouchebaggery.

Cup-less. :w00t:

Yep. But in the finals, and suddenly, interesting again for fans and free agents alike, and believing in themselves. I'll take a playoff spot with the hopes that the team can go farther than it did last year--it's not like a lottery pick this year is going to be that great anyway.

Oh for Pete's sake. No one is dreaming of 8th place and an early dismissal. But coming back from their atrocious start, without their leading scorer, and finishing in, say, 7th place (so they don't play Philly), and playing, say, Boston in the first round, with a shot at payback for last year, would be pretty GD exciting. They could win that series. It would be a lot of fun, and a great launching pad into the first offseason in the TP era.

It's OK - read some article where Pagula was quoting Scripture. So he'll be fine with it. ;)

I do know for certain there is a 0% chance they win the Cup if they finish below 8th. Also, I'm excited about the new ownership too, but let's not act like we know for certain how this guy is going to manage the team.

Fair point. I'd think of it more in terms of not knowing how well he's going to manage the team. I don't think there's any doubt he's going to manage it to try and win a championship. There's just no other logical reason for his having bought the team.

Okay first off if everyone forgets Philly was an 8th place team last year that essentially were lucky that the NYR decided to ride their season on Ollie Chokein. But they didn't make it anywhere in 8th place...had it not been for lack of goaltending, they could have hoisted the cup last year. The sabres just need to get in and then when playoffs start there is a different world of hockey to talk about.

No prob. This board would be less fun if we weren't so passionate about Sabres discussion, but we should keep the sticks down.

My satiric prodding is only a tribute to the mind-numbingly obvious facts that playoffs are better than no playoffs and that we as fans should continue to push the team to compete and win as much as possible regardless of what situation they're in.

And in fact, in this particular time in Sabres history, it'd be good to cheer for the team extra-extra-hard as a welcome/down payment to/on a what will hopefully be a great future with Terry Pegula. Let's make him fall in love with this franchise and get him even more excited about Sabres hockey by showing what we're capable of.

Because when you're in love, you spend a shitton of money.

Actually they were the 7th seed. Montreal rode their 8th seed into the conference finals.

Correct. On the last morning of the regular season, they were a ninth seed.
