That means you, Bulldog.

Lindy got butt ended under the eye, skated up ice, fell down, got up, ripped off his helmet, skated to Billy Smith, tackled him, let him go, got up and started yapping at the refs.

Yet the Legend of Lindy Ruff continues to grow...

@2:45 or so.

It's tough to tell, but I think Smith was running away.

meh.

referring to this as a "fight" is more in the way of acceptable short-hand than it is unwarranted (ballwashy) legend-building.

fwiw, it was a pretty vigorous take-down and it looked to me like ruff would have pursued the matter further if he hadn't been (understandably) worried about the injury to his eye.

OK, this happened in 1980. Maybe our youngens here like chz and Jack and d4rk never even heard of this. If I tell them Lindy fought a goalie one time who butt-ended him, don't you think they'd feel a bit cheated when they saw the video?

There's a certain tough guy reputation that surrounds Lindy that has little basis in fact, especially in the context of how his teams have played lo these many years.

i suspect they might -- "well, they didn't really fight ...".

hmmm - disagree. like you, i was born early enough to remember lindy being a player who could put up some points, play with an edge (no such expression at the time, granted), and wasn't shy at all about dropping them when he felt the situation warranted it. and there's plenty of evidence on youtube of the latter.

i will add: my review of that footage reminded me of the time that neely just PLANTED ruff. ouch.

EDIT: i actually see many clips where ruff is on the wrong end of a scrap (often against guys who were annually at the top of the PIM charts). i don't think that changes the analysis. call him a punching bag, but i don't think there's any genuine dispute that lindy was a tough SOB when he played.

Ruff was a bit like Montador (appologies to Monty here). He would drop the gloves if he had to but he sure wasn't looking to do it and he usually wasn't on the winning end of things. You definitely didn't want to depend on Lindy to provide some protection.

Lindy's rep for toughness is definitely overrated.

I had just finished TAS's post when I thought, "he was Steve Montador before there was a Steve Montador..."

Especially in the early 80's Lindy would drop the gloves regularly. He didn't back down.

He was no Larry Playfair, and he certainly wasn't pretty. But calling him a hard-nosed player is more than fair.

Maybe so, I do believe while playing a junior hockey game in Moose-Jaw he lifted a Mack Truck to rescue a child holding a puppy and a bible. They didn't have YouTube back then so please just take my word for it.

He also taught a once tough 6' 5" hell raiser that he doesn't need to use his size and strength. He can simply learn the art of the face-off and never have to wash his uniform again.

Lindy is Canadian for Gandhi.

That's crap. Aud's description is right on.

I'm going out on the leafy end of the branch here, but I'm guessing that you don't like Lindy Ruff. Is that correct?

Agreed. Lindy is more of a punching bag on this board than he ever was on the ice. It's amazing the lengths some will go to disparage a coach they have grown tired of. If you don't like the job he's doing as a coach, that's fine, just say so. There is no need to engage in revisionist history and smear a former captain of this franchise to support your opinion of him as a coach. .

Jeeze - why don't you just call him child molester - it would have as much basis in fact.

He was hardnosed. That is a fair assessment. In 11 seasons he had more than 10 fights 3 times. The rest of the years he averaged around 5 or 6. And he didn't win many. He stood up to be counted and that is noble. I am not taking away from it. But his rep is alot more bloated than footage justifies.

Which part is crap? Take a stroll over to hockeyfights.com and look at his fight record. Montador is an almost perfect comparison.

I have no issue with Lindy. I'd support him coming back next season for another try. My comments re: his rep as a tough guy is totally separate from my thoughts of him as coach.

Do they keep those fight records in the same book as Gymnastic results and Olympic Boxing decisions?

We need a stronger sarcasm emoticon around here.

I'm not even referring to the "fan balloting". Take a look at the number of fights and the guys he fought. Then check a few youtube clips. He's Montador from 1985. I'm sorry if that bursts your bubble of him. There really is no shame in being compared to Steve Montador in terms of being hard nosed.

I thought he was a tougher player and more stand-up than as a coach.

I can't knock a guy for getting his block knocked off if he stands up and is counted. I liked Ruff as a player.

A few you tube clips provide nothing more then anectdotal evidence. You referred to his fight record. Where is that recorded. I have no problem with the Montador comparisons. I have a problem with the last line in your first post. On a related note, I'm still trying to find a correlation where any Cup winner in recent memory other then Anaheim was knowm for its toughness.
